Autonomy Breeds Change (in teacher development)

Autonomy Breeds Change (in teacher development) | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

A year and a half ago I decided to implement a job-embedded growth model at the suggestion of some of my teacher leaders. They desperately sought time during the school day to engage in professional growth opportunities, learn how to integrate Web 2.0 tools, and develop their own Personal Learning Networks (PLN’s). After some thinking and looking at various options inherent in the current schedule, I decided to cut all non-instructional duties in half to create a Professional Growth Period (PGP).

A great way to spread out your content over a few weeks is to create a blog series! This will force you to fully think and plan out your idea, as well as to publish at least once a week. :-)

Further, it's a great opportunity to link back to previous posts on your blog as well as to leave the readers wanting more and increase the changes of their return.

Jeremy Pollard's curator insight, December 10, 2013 5:37 PM

Useful piece for first-timers. Content is a form of re-framing. Take an idea, nail it to the wall, then walk around it looking at it from different directions and angles.

Time is a great 'frame' for any topic - what was this topic like before, what is it like now, what do you think it will be like in the future.

Imagine the topic as it might appear to different people in different roles. This can be how you imagine it from their perspective.

The other great idea is to ask 3 or 4 other people what they think and share that also. They can be people in other roles in your company, partners or providers or channels or suppliers.  Most 'experts' are happy to invest 5-10 minutes sharing their thoughts.

Content for me is playing with perspectives.

Abstract

This paper reports the findings of a meta-interpretation into of the emergence of a new learning design concept and its positionality within the learning and teaching theory landscape. The purpose of this examination of the concept of ‘connectivism’ is to ‘dig for nuggets’ and contribute new knowledge to the current debate about the validity of ‘connectivism’ as a new and emerging learning theory. The deconstruction and systematic analysis of the concept ‘connectivism’ is based on a newly developed coding system that is also applied to other, established learning theories, providing a comparative evaluation of commonly agreed properties of well-known learning theories. The results of our analysis are discussed and possible implications for practice and further research are outlined.

J. Mark Schwanz's curator insight, December 21, 2013 11:09 AM

With MOOCs on the mind we have to see if Connectivism is a theory or just a new twist on Constructivism. Most recognize that we are facing a new world of instructional modalities but that we just don't have enough data to know what it all means yet.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, December 21, 2013 1:12 PM

Who is connnecting? That is an important question. I know a number of people who connect and what they have to offer is limited at best. An important consideration is creating praxis as we make meaning of theory in real-life situations.

Using Bloom's Taxonomy In The 21st Century: 4 Strategies For Teaching

Using Bloom's Taxonomy In The 21st Century: 4 Strategies For Teaching | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

For decades, education reform has been focused on curriculum, assessment, instruction, and more recently standards, and data, with these efforts only bleeding over into how students think briefly, and by chance. This means that the focus of finite teacher and school resources are not on promoting thinking and understanding, but rather what kinds of things students are going to be thinking about and how they’ll prove they understand them.
