Now is the time for state policymakers to embrace new models of learning

Now is the time for state policymakers to embrace new models of learning | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

Whether editing wikis, turning in homework for a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), or learning Arabic by chatting with their language partner from Marrakesh, students know that what happens in the four walls of their classroom is only one part of their academic life.

State education policy should enhance the connected life of the student, not restrict it. When students walk into the classroom, antiquated policy restrictions on time and place should not hamper their ability to receive the best instruction and content that the 21st century can offer. While many students now experience the benefits of digital learning, countless others are still left behind.

State and local governments are emerging as the new battlegrounds for innovative models of learning. From cities, such as Washington, D.C. trying to ban services like Uber, to state legislators voting to ban next-generation vehicles like Tesla, new innovations are confronting barriers created by policy and regulation.

Policy can protect the status quo and further entrench old models, or it can help accelerate reforms and scale innovation. State policy shapes the regulatory environment in which online providers operate, how schools can award credit, and how funding decisions are made. It can reinforce print resources, or it can free up funds to flow to digital content. It can limit new models of learning – like online, blended or competency-based education through geographic or enrollment caps, or by restricting the use of funds to purchase digital content; or it can support them by building a strong, sustainable and accountable framework.

Today’s policymakers and education leaders have the opportunity to usher in the next generation of education in America. The Internet and new technologies can be a catalyst for rethinking the way we organize learning, provide instruction, and meet the needs of students, teachers and parents. Digital learning can:

[PDF] Pew Research: Digital life in 2025

[PDF] Pew Research: Digital life in 2025 | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

The world is moving rapidly towards ubiquitous connectivity that will further change how and where people associate, gather and share information, and consume media. A canvassing of 2,558 experts and technology builders about where we will stand by the year 2025 finds striking patternsin their predictions.
The invited respondents were identified in previous research about the future of the Internet, from those identified by the Pew Research Center’s Internet Project, and solicited through major technology- oriented listservs. They registered their answers online between November 25, 2013 and January 13, 2014. In their responses, these experts foresee an ambient information environment where accessing the Internet will be effortless and most people will tap into it so easily it will flow through their lives “like electricity.” They predict mobile, wearable, and embedded computing will be tied together in the Internet of Things, allowing people and their surroundings to tap into artificial intelligence-enhanced cloud-based informat ion storage and sharing.
As Dan Lynch, founder of Interop and former director of computing facilities at SRI International, wrote, “The most useful impact is the ability to connect people. From that, everything flows.”To a notable extent, the experts agree on the technology change that lies ahead, even as they disagree about its ramifications. Most believe there will be:

A global, immersive, invisible, ambient networked computing environment built through the continued proliferation of smart sensors, cameras, software, databases, and massive data centers in a worlds panning information fabric known as the Internet of Things.“Augmented reality” enhancements to the real-world input that people perceive through the use of portable/wearable/implantable technologies.Disruption of business models established in the 20th century (most notably impacting finance, entertainment, publishers of all sorts, and education).Tagging, databasing, and intelligent analytical mapping of the physical and social realms.
These experts expect existing positive and negative trends to extend and expand in the next decade, revolutionizing most human interaction, especially affecting health, education, work, politics, economics, and entertainment. Most say they believe the results of that  connectivity will be primarily positive. However, when asked todescribe the good and bad aspects of the future theyforesee, many of the experts can also clearly identify areas of concern, some of them extremely threatening.
Heightened concerns over interpersonal ethics, surveillance, terror, and crime, may lead societies to question how best to establish security and trust while retaining civil liberties.

I couldn't agree more. As teachers, our role must change to one that enables, guides, personalises and embraces digital technology as a fundamental part of student learning. The most dangerous thing we can do to our students is to keep doing what our teachers and professors did to us:

Online universities 2.0: Taking education to the next level - worldwide

Online universities 2.0: Taking education to the next level - worldwide | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

A couple of years back, the very essence of education was to get enrolled in a prestigious university and attend regular classes. The Internet played no role in that. But not anymore; now, no matter where you are in the world, you can get educated, mostly free of charge, on different subjects. You choose what you want to learn and how. This is not only more practical, but a tremendous success. I am convinced that it will, over time, shift global education patterns and ultimately make the world a more even playing field, no matter where you start out -- all you need is access to a computer, Internet and the will to learn.

Online technology as a disruptive ingredient has brought a complete overhaul in our education system. The late 20th century witnessed a possible emergence of distance learning through Internet. Slowly and steadily, this paved way for several universities offering online courses and classes, and thus empowering thousands of people like never before. The growing popularity of online education can be further emphasized by the findings of a recent survey conducted in the University of Pennsylvania. The survey revealed that nearly 80 percent of the people who took admission in an online course were through with their bachelor's degree. Learning is now like ordering food in a restaurant, one class at a time.

Information and communication tools (ICT), Web2.0 applications, and the impact these resources are having on education are rapidly creating new challenges for instructor and learners faced with learning online. Teaching and learning in an e-learning environment happens differently than in the traditional classroom and can present new challenges to instructors and learners participating in this online learning environment. There is a need in e-learning to identify the challenges and consider best practice solutions to ensure instructor and learner success in this new learning environment.

Five ways that 21st and 20th Century Learning will differ | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

How will teaching and learning in the early 21st century differ from its 20th century predecessor? Some shifts are already well underway. These include the growing embrace of open educational resources and of courses collaboratively designed and developed by teams including content area specialists, educational technologists, and instructional designers. Peer mentoring and grading are becoming more common, as is a gradual shift toward learner-centered pedagogies and competency-based, outcomes-oriented approaches.

Google Apps, I believe are leading the way to student productivity. As teachers, we may see this as another hurdle in learning new technology, but students will grasp the concepts of Drive, Sharing, Collaborating, and etc, much easier than their teachers. I never thought about using the drawing as a whiteboard tool. Will have to give it a shot. Our district currently doesn't support hangouts, but with iPads we can probably use facetime in much the same way as described.
