I find it interesting that we want to prepare good citizens. Preparing good people with strong character leads to good citizens. I will take the latter over the former, because I will get the former. Plato had a theory of educating for good citizens. It was very narrow. Is that what we want?

Jamtok is an app providing music and games for language learning. So far Spanish and Japanese are offered. (free)

Peter Rettig's curator insight, August 17, 2014 10:09 PM

We love the idea of jamtok as we also believe that songs are a great way to train your ear for a foreign language and memorize words, phrases, and sentences. We actually wrote several blogs on this and our "La Paloma" blog is one of our most read posts. This also reminds me that we should do a review of the app.

How to Incorporate Popular Video Games into a Lesson Plan

How to Incorporate Popular Video Games into a Lesson Plan | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

Educators are always looking for new ways to make learning fun for their students. For that reason, many teachers have begun incorporating popular video games into their classroom curriculum. Because video games require problem-solving and strategy, it is only natural to assume they would fit nicely in the modern day classroom. Nearly 51 million students in kindergarten through 12th grade play video games, so their inclusion into the educational process makes perfect sense.

About ScissorsflyIn the spirit of freedom and creativity, we designed Scissorsfly. For the first time ever, you will be equipped with something that frees your imagination to creatively collect and organize everything you love on the web, and share them with friends.

Scissorsfly originates from an open hackathon hosted at LinkedIn, when Sillicon Valley tech talents from places like Google, Twitter, LinkedIn, or CMU, MIT, Stanford, Berkerly came to play. We won the championship with the idea called ClipIt, which becomes the magic scissors at your hand today.

Web 1.0 gave you static webpages. Web 2.0 gives you interactions and collaborations with the web and the world. Scissorsfly will give you not only that, but also the initiative to tailor the web at will. It will be an experience beyond the long lasting web 2.0...

Finally, you can run wild with these scissors.
Their MissionCollecting and organizing information is really important to us. However, it could be painful from time to time. We built Scissorsfly for you to enjoy the process.
TeamWe are an early stage startup based in Mountain View (CA) and Chicago (IL). Our team is small and close-knit, with both strong engineering (e.g. Google, Yahoo!, Linkedin, eBay) and research (e.g. security, data mining, machine learning) backgrounds. For anything interesting, drop us a line at support@scissorsfly.com.

"Is your technology dept. run by an IT professional or an educator?

Over the past several years I've seen K-12 school districts on both sides of this proverbial fence, and I also have acquaintances and colleagues in one roll or the other. However, I've seen very little discussion on the topic, and it's a shame. Real conversation about this position needs to happen. There are undoubtedly hundreds of Superintendents staffing this position for the wrong reasons."

10 Reasons Why We Need Research Literacy, Not Scare Columns

10 Reasons Why We Need Research Literacy, Not Scare Columns | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

The children and media research community has been buzzing with frustration at the viral circulation of Cris Rowan's Huffington Post column, "10 Reasons Why Handheld Devices Should Be Banned for Children Under the Age of 12." The piece pretty well defines "hack-ademic" writing, in which an author throws lots of learned-sounding terms and citations at a lay reader, while obscuring misinterpretations and fuzzy logic. Here are 10 reasons why Rowan's column is flawed.

If you're going to ignore social media in the classroom, then [..] stop pretending that you're helping low-income children overcome the digital divide if you aren't going to teach them how to communicate online.
Social media is here. It's just another resource and doesn't have to be a distraction from learning objectives. Social media is another tool that you can use to make your classroom more engaging, relevant and culturally diverse.

I'm generally a bit reticent about the idea of completely replacing teachers with machinery, but there are still teachers here, setting up the machines. Of course, they aren't being just replaced by machines in this model: the machines are just the repositories of information, like books are in traditional schools. The teachers are really being replaced by the groups of students helping each other learn.
