Some even use quotation marks, or use autocomplete to their advantage. But how about putting a dash before a word to exclude it from your search? Or using the tilde–like a boss–to search for synonyms for a term as well?"

We continue to use technology to reinforce 19th century teaching practice' | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

why [has] technology, to date, had very little impact on improved learning outcomes? This could be because we continue to use technology to reinforce 19th century teaching practice to meet out-dated assessment models. Most of the world’s curriculum and assessment systems are based around fact recall rather than actually demonstrating that you have learned something and can deploy it within a problem-solving situation.

Our  education system is nothing more than child-care with some

indoctrination thown in.

See/hear "The Wall" by Pink Floyd  (40+ years ago.)

Let the children play until they are old enough to decide what they are interested in learning. That's completely different than training them from Day 1 to "sit still, be quiet, and obey authority." Training a 5-year old to become a "worker" or 'Businessman"  is not education, but it may be child abuse.

Some really good points in this article. "The greatest risk of our investment in tablet computers is that nothing will change. We could find in a few years that, at great expense, we’ve traded paper textbooks for digital textbooks, paper notebooks for digital notebooks, and paper multiple choice tests for digital multiple choice tests. We may find that as educators we simply take these expensive new devices and digitize existing practices."

Connected eucators can treat this list as a checklist (yep, use this one, ditto that :-). The trends are interesting:

Twitter retains its no 1 position for the 5th year runningGoogle Drive/Docs moves up to #2.PowerPoint moves up to #5.Evernote moves into the top 10 at #6.Google + and Hangouts moves into the top 10 at #10.There are 10 new tools on the list topped by Feedly (an RSS reader/aggregator) at #19 and Coursera (a MOOC platform) at #38, and 3 returning tools to the list, including Storify at #58.The highest movers within the list are Skydrive (Windows file storage area) at #43 up 55 places since last year, and Keynote and iMovie up 40 and 32 places respectively (showing the increase in popularity of Apple software).A significant descent down the list for some tools including Google Sites (down 60 places) and Wikispaces (down 50 places).Tools moving off the list include Google Reader (now retired by Google), Bing and Scribd.Although the list is still dominated by free online social tools, a number of e-learning authoring tools have had a good showing this year.As for trends over the last 5 years, it is interesting to note that Firefox (#1 in 2007) is now at #97 on the list, and Delicious (#1 in 2008) is now at #60.  What will topple Twitter from the top of the list?

Ana Cristina, it all depends on the situation and the needs of the learners. For short courses or for writing skills development wikis can do a good job. For more complex courses or with larger groups, Moodle is my preferred option. An alternative to edmodo you might like to try out is https://www.schoology.com
Ana Cristina Pratas's comment, September 5, 2013 1:28 PM
In complete agreement Carl! It's the context that influences my choice of LMS. Because I find Edmodo meets my needs to have a simple & practical LMS for students, while at the same offering me the possibility to teach with it (e.g. word games, digital stories etc), I haven't had the need to set up wikis lately. I've heard very good things about schoology; from what I saw it's excellent as well. We really are spoilt by choice these days! (and yes, in complete agreement with you regarding Moodle; I like it especially for distance ed).

This questionnaire could be used to get to know your students in the first weeks back college; the questions are more about the student than you, your classroom, or education.

Our job is to lead students to understanding, but student self-awareness should precede that. These questions hit at a range of topics, but all revolve around that idea of a learner’s identity.

Also listed suggested activities that can be used with this resource.
