The Difference Between Doing Projects Versus Learning Through Projects

Beth Dichter's curator insight, November 3, 2013 8:46 PM

The graphic (above) provides a nice visual to help understand the difference between project based learning and traditional units with a final project. Where are the differences? Traditional units have lectures, activities, quizzes, a review, an exam the project. With project bases learning you begin with an event plus a rubric and then move through a series of activites that help students reach benchmarks. Project based learning is authentic learning.

More information on this can be found in the post.

Good visual as to how we should be shifting learning.

"The integration of technology in learning is not new. In the 1980s, many schools had fancy calculators, Macintosh computers, and were even teaching students basic coding...

The following technology integration matrix we spotted over on zzwriter.com‘s excellent blog takes a look at this idea of embedding technology at the curriculum level."

How pre-service teachers are using iPads to facilitate their own learning

How pre-service teachers are using iPads to facilitate their own learning | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

"Mobile handheld devices are spreading rapidly in education. iPads, especially, are increasingly being adopted by different educational sectors, but there is currently little empirical evidence on whether, or how, they facilitate student learning. This paper reports on how iPads contributed to pre-service teachers' learning, including their learning about teaching. Case studies of eight pre-service teachers were developed based on semi-structured interviews and non-participant observations to determine how they used the iPad 2 in their learning."

Jeffrey Earp's curator insight, October 25, 2013 4:11 AM

To put it bluntly, if YOUR teaching (and what you teach) can be replaced by students Googling and tweeting their friends, then yes, YOU should be replaced. Replacing TEACHING as an activity is another matter entirely. Self-guided, student-driven, collaborative approaches bring learners to the centre of the picture but do NOT spell the end of the teacher, quite the opposite. They require an expert, engaged teacher acting as a facilitator, a guide, and - crucially - a learning designer. Next time the "technology vs teacher" question raises its ugly head again, consider that the good ol' printed book is a technology.

“the students participating in this study were randomly assigned to a cooperative learning condition or an individualistic learning condition and were compelled to remain in their assigned conditions for both the regular classroom sessions and a series of homework sessions scheduled on a weekly basis.”

"The results “showed that given a sufficient period of time for the cooperative learning teams to mature, the students in the cooperative learning condition performed substantially better in both the homework and unit tests than those in the individualistic learning condition.”

Blended learning has much potential.  However, it is only PART of the solution to why ails education today.  It is not a replacement for funding.  Adequate funding, whether online of f2f, must go hand in hand.  You can't maximize the potential of education while cutting necessary $$$.

Technology Will Not Replace Teachers | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it
Technology can open doors, expand minds, and change the world. That may be true, but it's not the panacea that it's been made out to be. As much innovation as the iPad may bring to the classroom, it's not going to replace a teacher anytime soon.

Absolutely true.  Technology is another way to present material which needs to be learned.   Learners will always need someone to explain information found on the iPad in the same way they do with books.

The Process Approach to Online and Blended Learning

The Process Approach to Online and Blended Learning | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

"“Learning isn’t something that has to be confined to the classroom, and so as I teach blended classes, I think the more I can involve the students in learning and the more contexts I can involve them in, the more they’re going to learn,” he said. “The idea is to get them to slowly digest the information in different ways and to engage in different activities so that by the time the course comes to an end, they can apply the knowledge they have learned. That’s the ultimate goal: to get them to be in a state where they can apply the knowledge.”
