Only learners do the learning! They must recognise the value of the work, because learning can be hard work at times. Unless there is a good answer to the question, 'Why does this matter?' then student engagement will struggle and thus learning will tend to struggle. Get ready teachers, because this question will become more common as a curriculum or classroom question and the answer needs to resonate with the learners.

Teaching Crowds: Learning and Social Media

Teaching Crowds: Learning and Social Media | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it
In Teaching Crowds, Dron and Anderson introduce a new model for understanding and exploiting the pedagogical potential of Web-based technologies, one that rests on connections — on networks and collectives — rather than on separations. Recognizing that online learning both demands and affords new models of teaching and learning, the authors show how learners can engage with social media platforms to create an unbounded field of emergent connections. These connections empower learners, allowing them to draw from one another’s expertise to formulate and fulfill their own educational goals. In an increasingly networked world, developing such skills will, they argue, better prepare students to become self-directed, lifelong learners.

Digital games have the potential to transform K-12 education as we know it. But what has been the real experience among teachers who use games in the classroom? In 2013, the Games and Learning Publishing Council conducted a national survey among nearly 700 K-8 teachers. The report reveals key findings from the survey, and looks at how often and why teachers use games in the classroom, as well as issues they encounter in their efforts to implement digital games into their practice.

"Last week, I attended the De Lange Conference held at Rice University every other year, this time on “Teaching in the University of Tomorrow.” The future-oriented theme had both intrigued me, and left me a little skeptical. But ultimately I was won over by the chance to attend, for the first time, a conference exclusively focused on teaching. I would be able to talk shop about learning and pedagogy. Like many other academics, I’m concerned about what the university of tomorrow might become."

MOOCs -- Completion Is Not Important

MOOCs -- Completion Is Not Important | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

"Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are oftendescribed as the future of education — or at least a significant part of it. But there may be a significant problem with them: a very small proportion of students who start them actually finish. This poses a serious threat to their legitimacy. Many are beginning to think that if less than 10% of students even complete MOOCs, they must be useless. This worry is largely unfounded, since people benefit even without completion."
