Even though I am "techy," I always espouse that it's never technology all the time. In fact, my classroom is always a hybrid environment. As such, my students write traditional research essays. As we recently implemented Google Apps for Education at Ransom Everglades School, I elected to do the entire writing and revision process within Google Drive. Here is how I chunked out the process and used Google Drive to better track my students’ writing process.

Using Google Docs to do so much more when teaching writing - things that fit quite nicely into my flipped, just-in-time, technology enabled classrooms.

Another good story about why one teacher uses Google Docs over Microsoft products.

 

It's not what Word etc., can do as an application, it's what Google Docs can do in terms of monitoring student work, encouraging collaboration and giving students timely feedback.  

 

This means, that for me at least, I will continue to use Google Docs until Microsoft catch up.

I'm now trying a new way to monitor changes to my shared Google Documents.

Gerald Carey's insight:

I have used this for over a year now and although some aspects of it are inaccurate (e.g. it tells you that a document was changed a year ago when in fact it is currently being changed by the author), it is helpful for telling me which students are online and what assignment they are working on.  Really helpful if I want to send them a quick message.
