Selina Palmer's insight:

The Makers of Alice claim “Using an innovative programming environment to support the creation of 3D animations, the Alice Project provides tools and materials for teaching and learning computational thinking, problem solving, and computer programming across a spectrum of ages and grade levels”. After experiencing this program for myself I too believe this to be the case. Creativity, creation and innovation are all requirements of the National Curriculum Technology draft and this program defiantly delivers.

70 best iPad apps for designers | iPad | Creative Bloq

70 best iPad apps for designers | iPad | Creative Bloq | Using digital technologies to engage students in design technology. | Scoop.it
Apple's tablet is becoming a serious tool for content creation. We reveal the best iPad apps for design, creativity, inspiration, and organisation.
Selina Palmer's insight:

Maybe it’s time in your classroom to let the students select the apps and program they would like to use to design and create.

Creative blog have made a compilation of design tools for the iPad, most of them are based around photography and video but there are some great story creators, drawing apps and even a 3D folding app. There are 70 different apps listed so I’m sure you will be able to find a few to use in the classroom.

Give students choice to see what they come up with to achieve the curriculum goals, this in itself would be a task to help them achieve the digital technologies knowledge and understanding content
through the analysis of effective tools for design projects. This could form a starting point.

my StoryMaker at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh

my StoryMaker at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh | Using digital technologies to engage students in design technology. | Scoop.it
Selina Palmer's insight:

I know this is an American site but the results are great. These sorts of story makers are great for prompting creative writing and encouraging kids to think sequentially. This one even suggests sentences based on props you provide for your character. I also liked that the site gave me the opportunity to print my story or to save it.

I believe it more suited to lower and middle primary and children as young as five would be able to create a story, with a little help for the text. Carnegie Library have provided a great resource for the creation of books, making technology understanding and design process and production more achievable in the foundation years.

Inky Fingers

Get Inky Fingers on the App Store. See screenshots and ratings, and read customer reviews.
Selina Palmer's insight:

Inky Fingers is an iPad app that encourages young learners to be creative. Children all love to paint but sometimes the mess, cost and time need to set up and clean up outweighs the fun. This app addresses these issues and children are able to create, capture and print their works of art. By using digital technology to implement design technology set up and pack up may not be as challenging while still allowing the younger student to engage with 21st century tools.

This is a great tool for enhancing student design technologies skills. It can be implemented in any design activity or task set by the teacher. For example students could design a new classroom space or school logo, there are numerous possibilities for what the app could be used for. I too agree that this is a simple and mess free way for students to create designs with a simple yet effective ICT tool.
