Cognitive Overhead, Dieter Rams & Extreme Users for your UX | TechCrunch | UX Design | Scoop.it

Why Your Product Isn’t As Simple As You Think

Ever heard of Cognitive Overhead ?

“How many logical connections or jumps your brain has to make in order to understand or contextualize the thing you’re looking at.”-- David Demaree

Test it on extreme users !

"The very young and the very old are even more sensitive to cognitive overhead, as their brains aren’t accustomed to the sort of logical leaps our products sometimes require. Grandparents and children make great cognitive overhead detectors.

When you can’t find old or young people, drunk people are a good approximation."

Jack-of-all-trades but Master-of-none syndrom ?

"By trying to appeal to everyone and adding features left, right and centre, you actually dilute your message and could end up with a complex, bloated product." -- Lack of Focus, one of the 10 common mistakes startups make in their UX, more on NetMagazine http://bit.ly/NediAj

Les modèles de l’utilisateur

Les modèles de l’utilisateur | UX Design | Scoop.it
Les modèles de l’utilisateur
Armony Hren's insight:

Armony Hren's insight:

If you’ve been involved in usability tests, you’ve witnessed this scenario: a test subject is looking for a specific interface element, and even though he is looking directly at it, he can’t seem to see it. This idea of looking but not seeing is a well-known concept in psychology called inattentional blindness, or selective attention.

Learning to Learn: fighting cognitive biases

Learning to Learn: fighting cognitive biases | UX Design | Scoop.it
Critical thinking is an increasingly important skill that has been overlooked by many as information becomes more accessible and superfluous.
Armony Hren's insight:

1. The Hard-Easy Bias – the pattern of overconfidence in easy situations and under confidence in difficult situations.
2. Irrational Escalation – compounding a bad investment, because “it’s already bad.”
3. The Observer-Expectancy Effect – when expectations influence outcome.
4. Reactance – the desire to do the opposite of what you’re asked or advised, simply to prove your freedom of choice.
