Being Critically Reflective - What does it mean?

Being Critically Reflective - What does it mean? | Useful resources in the classroom | Scoop.it

The terms 'critical' and 'reflection' are sorely misunderstood in education. Being critical is often misinterpreted as being negative. 'Reflection' is also frequently distorted to mean "reflect on what you are doing wrong". Too often the students that we teach give negative feedback when asked to be critical. So to counter act this, educators initiate strategies such as '2 stars and a wish' and SWNI (strengths, weaknesses, new ideas).
These strategies are designed to make reflective practices a more positive experience for students. It teaches them that being critically reflective is not just a negative activity, that it is important to be positive and give feedback to help improve or make something better.

4 Free Apps That Teach the Basics of Coding - We Are Teachers

4 Free Apps That Teach the Basics of Coding - We Are Teachers | Useful resources in the classroom | Scoop.it

"If your class is like mine, the kids are always talking about playing video games! Rather than discouraging that interest, I want to harness it to encourage a higher level of thinking in my class. That is exactly what happens when kids explore coding. I love watching their faces as they try to process that people have to "tell" technology what to do in order for a game to work.

For many kids, the thought of creating games is even more exciting than playing them. Supporting their interest in gaming is important because the process of coding promotes problem-solving, creativity, collaboration and communication skills. Below I have listed four apps that are great places to start learning about coding with young kids. '

Ryan McDonough's curator insight, July 7, 2014 4:23 PM

Games don't grow on trees. They have to be created by a human droid that writes thousands and thousands lines of code. Ask your class,"If you want to make video games when you grow up, raise your hand "? I'd bet as you glance around the room, most of your students' hands would be up. Coding is the source that makes it all possible. Introducing coding concepts at an early age also makes it easier to learn-- much like learning a foreign language as a kid is easier than learning as an adult. These apps are free and can provide a platform to at least introduce the beginning concepts of gaming. What should the character be doing, how do I end the story, who saves the princess, etc. One I've used in my classroom is Daisy the Dinosaur.

How Much Data Is Generated On Twitter, Instagram, Vine, Tinder & WhatsApp Every Minute? | AllTwitter

How Much Data Is Generated On Twitter, Instagram, Vine, Tinder & WhatsApp Every Minute? | AllTwitter | Useful resources in the classroom | Scoop.it

Here’s the thing: the internet never sleeps.

Which means data never sleeps, and the internet sure likes to use up a lot of it. How much? In any given minute, 277,000 tweets are published on Twitter, 216,000 photos are sent to Instagram and 8,333 videos are shared on Vine.

And we’re just getting started. Over that same 60 second period, 347,222 photos are sent on WhatsApp, 416,667 swipes are made on Tinder and 3,472 images are pinned on Pinterest.

And if you think that’s impressive, Google receives 4 millions search queries, Facebook users share 2.46 million pieces of content and 204 million email messages are sent each and every minute of the day.

This visual from DOMO looks at how much data is generated every minute across the net....

I see huge value in the Thinglink tool (both App and Web), especially if you are a Google school and create or store digital archives online (as all you need is a URL to link too).

Our Year 4 to 6 teachers have created a Thinglink (placed on their clasblog) using their class photo and linked each one of the students blogs to it - simple, effective and visually capturing (Whanau love being able to view their blogs easily).

"Raising a digitally savvy and responsible student does require  explicit modelling  and instruction on how to deal with the vagaries of Internet. In an age where everything you do online leaves  indelible marks (digital footprints)  that can be accessed and viewed by anyone , knowing how and what to share and with whom to share it become digital imperatives that every student should be aware of. This kind of knowledge is at the core of the digital citizenship concept."
