Always hated going to the car dealership, well except the Infiniti dealerships.  Nonetheless Tesla is likely onto something here, people do hate going to the car dealership and Adam Hartung has done an excellent job of pointing out how Tesla is disrupting the car sales market.  Nice

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has won a competition to desalinate unusable water and make it drinkable for humans and crops.

The MIT team, which includes participants from India's Jain Irrigation Systems, designed a photovoltaic-powered electrodialysis reversal system that desalinates water using electricity to pull charged particles out of the water. It also further disinfects water using ultraviolet rays.  -  The announcement from USAID said the MIT-Jain system was designed for low energy consumption, thereby limiting costs, especially in areas without easy access to electricity.  -  Desalination is one of several ideas that have been proposed to combat California's four-year drought, though experts point out that the process is still expensive and can create its own environmental problems.

According to a report published yesterday by Technavio, a leading technology research and advisory company, the smart glasses market for augmented reality is expected to grow at a CAGR (Compound annual growth rate) of 194% from 2015 to 2019. Besides the major high tech companies mentioned above, the report also emphasized the importance of companies that pioneered in the industry like Vuzix Corp. as well as of smaller vendors that are using crowd funding sources like Kickstarter to develop and manufacture their produces.   -  With such technology the surrounding real world of the user becomes interactive, and can be manipulated, which can be highly beneficial in several industries.  For example, in construction and architecture, augmented reality can be utilized by creating a 3D model of a certain design on an existing space, giving the architect a better look at how the project will end up looking at a specific spot. The same functionalities are already being widely used in the video game industry, as well as in the media entertainment industry, though their gadgets are highly priced, and designed specifically for graphics manipulation.  A newer generation of augmented reality technology, that will be far more affordable and offer a far wider range of functions is on the way.

Nobody, it seems, wants to repeat the mistake of eight years ago, when the Apple iPhone set all competitors back several years in a revolutionised mobile market. That includes, of course, Apple itself, which finds itself in the tricky situation of having to continue innovating to retain its first-rate brand reputation.  -  While no smart watch is yet to be considered a big success, and a lot of scepticism around their relevance remains, the vast industry backing – particularly from the hugely influential Apple – is likely to generate some to substantial adoption.  That means the enterprise must now take notice. Businesses found themselves tragically behind in developing mobility strategies that could control the onslaught of smartphones on corporate networks, and are unlikely to be forgiven if they are equally unprepared for wearable devices.

Toshiba’s technology reduces the frequency of the mode transition by gathering the separate data acquisitions from multiple sensors which get data at their own regular intervals. In this way, the number of mode transitions can be decreased, hence the reduction of power consumption from mode transitions is achieved. On the other hand, if aggregating leads to significant failures in data acquisitions, it will have a considerably negative impact of the functions of the application, such as step measurement or behavior analysis in activity monitors. Toshiba has developed an aggregating method that optimizing timing of data acquisition to suppress failures.  -  To evaluate the method, Toshiba ran an activity monitoring application on TZ1001MBG. The result showed a 31% power reduction, proving efficient power saving technology. Toshiba has now embedded this technology into TZ1000 series MCU.

Google researchers have joined the search for better batteries to power Google’s expansion into consumer electronics and other hardware.

Dr. Bhardwaj of the Google X research lab has told industry executives that Google has at least 20 battery-dependent projects. The company’s latest self-driving car runs on batteries recharged by electricity. The first version of Google’s Glass Internet-connected eyewear suffered from short battery life, which the company hopes to improve. An effort to use nanoparticles to diagnose diseases relies on a small battery-powered monitoring device.  -  “Google wants to control more of their own destiny in various places along the hardware supply chain,” said Lior Susan, head of hardware strategy at venture-capital firm Formation 8. “Their moves into drones, cars and other hardware all require better batteries.”

Researchers, lead by chemistry professor Dai Hongjie, might have stumbled on the answer in a new variant of an aluminum-ion battery.  -  Cheaper, safer, faster charging. That's the promise of the aluminum-ion battery that Dai has been working on. This type of battery has already been the focus of many chemists, researchers, and industry experts as the next evolution of batteries. But they have always been foiled by the type of materials to be used, which, in turn, would determine the performance of the battery. Dai says they "accidentally" discovered that a cathode, the positively charged electrode of a battery, made of graphite gave the best performance.  -  The result is a battery that has many of the ideal properties that a next generation power source could have. It will be cheaper, for one, considering aluminum is a more affordable material than lithium. It is also safer. It won't catch fire even when damaged, even when you drill a hole in it, says Dai

Principle 1: The Art of Pursuit - Effective pursuit is about observation, assessment, and calibration.  Any good pursuit begins with doing your homework. You must know your goals and standards before you can hope to live up to them.

Principle 2: The Impact of Energy: Confidence is the closest thing in this world to magic.  The human brain is amazing. Its complexity and magnificence is unquestioned in science and religion alike; it synthesizes complex information and seemingly unseen cues to make dozens of decisions each instant without any awareness from us.

Leap Motion announced that it has teamed up with Razer, allowing the former company’s hand tracking technology to appear in Razer’s OSVR (Open Source Virtual Reality) headset once it gets released a few months from now.  Developers will have an option to purchase a faceplate with Leap Motion gesture-tracking software and hardware baked into it, allowing them to create apps, and maybe games that make use of hand tracking as a key feature.

These new tires will be able to add a few extra miles on each journey, and recharge the car while it's parked.

Among the big factors limiting the popularity of electric cars are long journeys and if the electric motors will last long enough. The lack of electric recharging stations is another issue. Goodyear's new tire tackles both issues by recharging while parked and on the road.  -  It will only be useful in places where the temperature is warm for most of the year since the tires won't heat up if there's no heat. The friction while driving will be available regardless of climate but there are no numbers on how much energy this friction can generate

Combining pedal and solar power to create a uniquely personal transportation alternative to buying that (expensive) hybrid car, albeit these aren't cheap either, $5.5K but hey if you're up for keeping fit, and low carbon footprint and be able to haul around some stuff (150Ibs) while you're doing that then the ELF might be the trick.

Before Sony unveiled Morpheus, VR looked like a niche, dominated by promising startups but still a sideshow to the $77 billion game industry, which focuses on titles largely played on televisions and computer monitors. After, Facebook bought industry poster child Oculus VR for $2.3 billion. That acquisition signaled to tech companies everywhere that VR wasn't going to lose its sheen after sucking up millions of dollars in investment, as it did in the early '90s before fading back into science fiction.

Some of these companies (SanDisk, IBM, Micron, Solidfire and others) are looking at mixed storage technology environments but it is clear that all of these applications are moving flash memory closer to being a primary storage repository to take advantage of its higher performance. The advances by SanDisk with its Infiniflash platform as well as offering by Micron, Solidfire and other companies are taking us closer to the use of flash memory for primary storage applications.

The Vizio P-Series of TVs start at $599 and go all the way to $3,999. The TVs have full array LED backlighting which spreads out the light evenly across the panel. In addition they have an upscaling engine that can convert 720P and 1080P video to “near 4K” resolution.  - 

Vizio’s M-Series of TVs are available now, and are the lowest priced 4K TVs available in North America market by a long shot (Xiaomi hasn’t made it across the Pacific yet). Very likely this entry-level priced 4K market is where the growth will be, as the low price points will mean even skeptical consumers are not deterred from making the jump to 4K.

The plant will use a motor-generated flywheel to harness kinetic energy from the grid at times of over-supply. This will then be released from submerged turbines at times of supply shortfalls.

The project in Rhode, County Offaly, is expected to launch commercially in 2017, with an operating capacity of 20MW.

Although the system will initially feed off all energy in the grid – clean and dirty alike – it has the potential to resolve the transmission system operators’ dilemma of how to store large amounts of energy created during windy or sunny conditions for instantaneous use when the weather changes.  -  At the moment, such energy shortfalls are compensated for with fossil fuel generators such as coal or gas-fired power plants, or by hydro pump storage. Unlike conventional coal and gas generators which have an efficiency ratio of 35-40%, the flywheel operates at upwards of 85-90% efficiency.

Facebook Thursday said it would begin testing a service to deliver information about shops and landmarks to users who are nearby, in part by using localized transmitters known as “beacons.”

Facebook said it will begin testing Place Tips in New York City in coming weeks after installing beacons at eight shops, including the Strand Book Store, The Burger Joint at Le Parker Meridien Hotel and Dominique Ansel Bakery, inventor of the “cronut.”  -  The service also will work around landmarks such as Central Park, the Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square and the Statue of Liberty. Because those areas are larger, Facebook will use GPS signals, cellphone towers and Wi-Fi signals, but not beacons, to locate users.  -  Place Tips will deliver information derived from the locations’ Facebook pages, above the news feeds on users’ smartphones. For now, the service is free for businesses, but Facebook said it could one day sell ads tied to the information, giving it another way to make ads more personal, and potentially relevant.  -  The service will contribute to a trend, on Facebook and in other media, of blurring the distinction between content and marketing. Facebook already mixes advertisements into its news feed so that the ads blend in.

The end goal is to allow smart solar PV inverters, energy storage systems, plug-in electric vehicles, responsive building energy loads, and other grid-edge systems to work in real time with the utility smart grid platforms they’re connected to -- not through complicated, project-by-project integration, but in a more “plug-and-play” fashion.  -  That’s a tough challenge, as we’ve noted in our ongoing coverage of efforts on this front. To date, the world’s microgrids have been built with components from different vendors, using different technology implementations, which makes integrating them a complex and time-consuming task, not easily replicable from one project to the next.

Detecting engine noises (of enemy aircraft) at greater distances allowed more time to prepare a response. Large and elaborate detectors were experimental, and their efficiency varied widely. A number of designs were quite striking, such as the Japanese acoustic locators nicknamed "war tubas."  -  Their use continued until the early years of WWII, but increases in aircraft speeds and the development of radar rendered them obsolete.  - The point of this post is that technology on how to solve problems evolves and gets better at doing what it is intended to do, this if anything is the evolution of mankind, is the evolution of the tools that it uses to get things done.

One of the barriers to online shopping is that shoppers can’t actually experience the products or try them on. This is one of the obstacles that virtual reality has the potential to address.  According to the survey, 35% of consumers said that the introduction of virtual reality will make them more open to purchasing more online since it will give them a more realistic feel of the product. Part of the issue has been compatibility. The Powermat standard, which has been adopted by the Power Matters Association, or PMA, does not play nice with charging pads utilizing a different standard called Qi from the Wireless Power Consortium (209 Companies are a part of WPC). Samsung got around the issue by including both Qi and PMA standards.

Scout offers some finite things other home security platforms don’t. You can still arm and disarm your home with RFID and the door sensor. Offline support and 24/7 monitoring aren’t found elsewhere either. Aesthetically, it’s the classiest option we’ve seen yet.

Whether or not you need what Scout offers is another matter entirely. What Scout has done is brought a measure of security to DIY home security,


"The problem we have with legacy systems were nearly answered with “existing” DIY kits. We got lower cost hardware that we owned, but we lost the monitoring we forgot we wanted. The problem with the old-school loaned hardware was that we didn’t own it, and it was dependent on a monthly fee for monitoring via a contract, and was useless outside of that. Companies acted like monitoring was necessary, not optional. Scout gives you options across the board, and that’s why it’s awesome."


"The downside with Scout is that you’ll pay for the robust features, upfront and monthly (optional, of course). Of course, we’re comparing it to systems that don’t offer quite the same stepped-up feature set in either home security direction. If you even think you might want monitoring and the like, Scout is a must-have."
