In 1726 Montevideo was founded. In 1825 Uruguay declared its independence from Brazil. In 2001-2004 an economic crises caused 15% of Uruguay’s population to leave the country to find work. In 2004 poverty rate in Uruguay was 31%. In 2006 thousands of taxi and truck drivers went on strike for lower fuel prices.

Type of government

 

A military coup in 1973 ended the civilian government. The military dictatorship used terror to keep control. In November 1984 the military regime allowed the election of a civilian government. After twelve years in March 1985 full political and civil rights were restored. Now Uruguay is a constitutional republic.

Some 88 percent of the population is white and of Spanish or other European descent. Mestizos make up 8 percent of the population. Blacks make up the last 4 percent.Uruguay’s total area is 176,220 square kilometers. It is slightly smaller than the state of Washington.66% of Uruguay is Roman Catholic. Only half of the population attends church. 2% of Uruguayans are Protestant. 2% are Jewish. 30% have no religious affiliation.
