New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s twelve years in office will leave an undeniable impression on the physical landscape of the city for future generations.  The new and revised policies of this administration have encouraged unprecedented growth of New York City and its outer boroughs in the years following 9/11.  According to a new series calledThe Bloomberg Years by WNYC, and this article by Matthew Schuerman, Bloomberg’s three consecutive terms have made New York City taller, more attractive and, in turn, more expensive.

One of the mayor’s major motivations for running aggressive policies that promote growth came from a need to sustain the city’s fiscal health during the shaky times that followed 9/11. Aside from the major work that has been done by the Port Authority at the World Trade Center site, the city has boomed with new building reaching new heights, covering revitalized neighborhoods throughout all five boroughs. During the past twelve years, 7 of the 20 tallest buildings in New York City were built under Bloomberg.

[Newport, Wales, UK] AD Classics: Inmos Microprocessor Factory / Richard Rogers Partnership

[Newport, Wales, UK] AD Classics: Inmos Microprocessor Factory / Richard Rogers Partnership | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Having made his name with the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Lloyd’s building, Richard Rogers – who turns 80 today – was commissioned in 1980 to design the Inmos microprocessor factory in Newport, Wales. The factory’s design was targeted for the delicate process of microchip assembly, which requires a clean and controlled space. Built at the time of the computer-chip boom, construction had to be completed within one year, a factor which would greatly influence the design.

Rogers’s response, based on his previous high-tech designs, was to move the services to the outside of the building and split the interior into ‘clean’ spaces for microchip assembly and ‘dirty’ spaces for other tasks. Moreover, Rogers opted for an off-site prefabrication of parts, which not only increased the speed of construction, but would also allow for the factory to be easily replicated as a model.

Bruce A. Goff: organic, ECLECTIC, and often flamboyant designs for houses and other buildings

Bruce A. Goff: organic, ECLECTIC, and often flamboyant designs for houses and other buildings | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Bruce Alonzo Goff (June 8, 1904 – August 4, 1982) was an American Architect distinguished by his organic, eclectic, and often flamboyant designs for houses and other buildings in Oklahoma and elsewhere.

Born in Alton, Kansas, Goff was a child prodigy who apprenticed at the age of twelve to Rush, Endacott and Rush of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Goff became a partner with the firm in 1930. He is credited, along with his high-school art teacher Adah Robinson, with the design of Boston Avenue Methodist Church in Tulsa, one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in the United States.

Goff accepted a teaching position with the School of Architecture at the University of Oklahoma in 1942. Despite being largely self-taught, Goff became chair of the school. This was his most productive period. In his private practice, Goff built an impressive number of residences in the American Midwest, developing his singular style of organic architecture that was client- and site-specific.

Minimalism + Light: CURVED Courtyard House in Naruto, Japan

Minimalism + Light: CURVED Courtyard House in Naruto, Japan | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

A MINIMALIST house with a curved exterior that provides privacy, security, natural light and air circulation, and plenty of space for children to play.

Osaka-based architect Naoko Horibe was given a tall order when she set out to design this residence in Naruto-Shi, Tokushima, Japan. First, the property is located in an area that tends to flood during heavy rains. Second, the clients wanted their new home to provide security and privacy, while at the same time having enough space for their children. And last, but not least, they asked for the house to have good natural light and air circulation throughout.

To work around the potential flooding situation, the foundation and floor were built fairly high. The house itself is designed such that the rooms are built around a central courtyard. The rooms loop together and create a path for the kids to run around.

The courtyard helps bring light into the interior, helping to achieve one of the clients’ requests. It also helps with air circulation.
