Libeskind’s Achilles Heel: The L Tower Embodies The Architect’s BIGGEST Failings - Explore, Collect and Source architecture & interiors

Libeskind’s Achilles Heel: The L Tower Embodies The Architect’s BIGGEST Failings - Explore, Collect and Source architecture & interiors | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

For some time now, I have been ranting against “Brand Architecture”—the growing trend of treating buildings as vehicles for self-advancement. The architects who practice this sort of design impose their signature style regardless of their function or location, completely disregarding socio-economic, political and cultural concerns in the process. Now, one of the most infamous offenders in this field, Daniel Libeskind, has produced a structure free from the shackles of self-conformity—unfortunately, it may just be his greatest failure yet.

This time last year, the obtusely named L Tower topped out in downtown Toronto; now it inches toward completion, lining alongside a plethora of works by big-name architects spreading across the city in the last decade.

Meadowbrook Residence: Phoenix, Arizona

Meadowbrook Residence: Phoenix, Arizona | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Jay Atherton Architect’s Meadowbrook Residence was initially inspired by fluctuating seasons of light. Situated in Phoenix, Arizona abounded by an undemanding audience, the architectural formwork is an overt abstraction; yet consciously unspoiled and quiet. Despite the employment of natural materials and local stone, the building itself sits framed by its surroundings, as well as resting respectfully amongst it.

The Meadowbrook Residence, completed in 2008, stands much akin to a light box in a landscaped setting. It is organized around three main sculptural rooms, and each receives light differently through the day and year. At night, it is a seamless lantern where the contrasting finishes and textures stand to highlight and emphasize one another. The junctions between the series of uninterrupted planes throughout are finished beautifully and celebrate minimalist principles.

Jay Atherton Architects are to be commended for this work and for their dedication to the firmness of discipline.

Providence Journal: Must Parking Garages Be So UGLY?

Providence Journal: Must Parking Garages Be So UGLY? | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

In his column in Providence Journal, David Brussat questions why parking garages can’t be designed to better compliment their surroundings. He believes that these utilitarian spaces should look like they “belong in a city,” rather than resembling “a giant set of concrete shelves.” He also examines cities which achieve this aim – incorporating styles from Art Deco to Neo-classical – and comes to the interesting conclusion that Richmond, Virginia is the “mecca of parking decks.”

Four Post-War UK Buildings Given Heritage Status | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Four post-war buildings, including the Spectrum Building by Norman Foster and Capel Manor House by Michael Manser, have been elevated to the Heritage List by the UK’s Architecture and Heritage Minister Ed Vaizey. Upon announcing the news, the Minister commented that in spite of England’s ”fine and wonderful built heritage it’s sometimes forgotten that we have many outstanding modern buildings too.” His listings show that “architecture in this country is very much alive and well in the modern world.”

Honoring Architecture’s DIGITAL Pioneers

Honoring Architecture’s DIGITAL Pioneers | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Many would consider Greg Lynn the leader of computer-aided design in architecture – but Lynn himself begs to differ. He and the Canadian Centre for Architecture recently collaborated on “Archaeology of the Digital,” the first in a series of exhibitions that will showcase the work of the earliest adopters of digital techniques in architecture. The exhibit, which opened on May 7, focuses on work by Frank Gehry, Peter Eisenman, Chuck Hoberman, and Shoei Yoh. In this interview, originally published in Metropolis Magazine as “Computer Control,” Avinash Rajagopal speaks with Greg Lynn about some of the projects and the inspiration behind the exhibit itself.

Mapping China: An Architecture Retrospective Since 2000
Curated by LI Xiangning

From the collectivism of the past to the "Chinese Speed" that caught the world's attention after post-Mao reforms, what lessons are to be learned from the explosive growth of China's cities and construction industry? Thought and practice in modern construction over the more than ten years since the new millennium dawned will be conveyed through evaluations of the past, documents and small-scale design, with an emphasis on academic presentation. The evaluations of Chinese contemporary construction and architects for the years from 2000 to 2013 will be led by construction pundits, including Li Xiangning, Shi Jian, Zhu Tao and Tang Keyang.

RIBA and Arb Team Up to REFORM UK Architecture Education

RIBA and Arb Team Up to REFORM UK Architecture Education | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

The RIBA and Arb have teamed together to examine UK architectural education, with the aim of bringing the UK into line with other EU countries.

The move is part of a new EU directive, due to be ratified next month, which seeks to establish more uniformity across Europe by aligning the time it takes to qualify and by making mutual recognition of title easier between countries – a move which would make architects more free to move between countries.
