Triangle Modernist Houses - Documenting, Preserving, Promoting Residential Modern Architecture...

Most people are surprised, even shocked, to learn the Triangle area of North Carolina has the third largest concentration of Modernist houses in America, more than anywhere else except Los Angeles and Chicago. Who knew that little ol' Mayberry would be a center for great residential architecture?
Triangle Modernist Houses (TMH) is America's largest open digital archive for residential Modernist architecture. We are an educational resource with a heartfelt mission for the documentation, preservation, and promotion of Modernist houses.

TMH offers the design-loving public an exciting source for NC Modernist house tours, an extensive catalog of NC and national residential architecture, and a community of knowledgeable advocates for new Modernist construction and renovation.

Le PATRIMOINE menacé par l'AMATEURISME et l'esprit de compétition | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Identités remarquables : architecture et urbanisme durables, une collection d'exemples franciliens (expo) | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Éco-région, ville durable, urbanisme durable, architecture durable…

Modern Architecture’s Dark Side by Martin Filler | NYRblog | The New York Review of Books

Modern Architecture’s Dark Side by Martin Filler | NYRblog | The New York Review of Books | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

There has long been a tendency to see the most important innovations of Modernism as arising directly from progressive causes. War, in this view, was considered a limiting if not wholly destructive force that stymied civilian architecture in favor of retrogressive military structures. But in his groundbreaking recent book Architecture in Uniform: Designing and Building for the Second World War, the French architectural historian and architect Jean-Louis Cohen establishes one big, awful, inescapable truth: the full potential of twentieth-century architecture, engineering, and design was realized not in the social-welfare and urban-improvement schemes beloved by the early proponents of the Modern Movement, but rather through technologies perfected during the two world wars to slaughter vast armies, destroy entire cities, decimate noncombatant populations, and industrialize genocide.

Parlour: Women, Equity, Architecture

Parlour: Women, Equity, Architecture | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Through research, discussions and essays from a variety of resources, Parlour: Women, Equity, Architecture is a platform, a coach, and an inspiration that is available to women worldwide in an effort to bridge the gender gap that exist in the historically male dominant profession of architecture. Launched by a team of scholars led by Dr. Naomi Stead from The University of Queensland and developed and edited by Justine Clark from The University of Melbourne, this website is relevant to all members of the profession, women and men, in all parts of the world. It highlights the reasons why gender gaps are felt as in “implicit bias” whether in pay scale or upward mobility, even though discrimination and prejudices may not be explicit. In this regard, the website and its collection of resources, aims to create a forum for a dialogue about the actual and perceived barriers that empowers women to challenge the social structure that fosters this proven under-representation, whether it is due to professional practices and “gendered behavioral practices” or pressures that women feel to leave the profession at a much higher rate than men.

“Line, Surface, Space“ Installation / Kawahara Krause Architects

“Line, Surface, Space“ Installation / Kawahara Krause Architects | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

The “Line, surface, space“ installation, by Kawahara Krause Architects, is displayed as part of the architectural triennale in Hamburg this summer. Erected on the plan of three interlocking twisted squares of different sizes, the threads of the outer square suggest the edges of an imaginary space, while the more densely arranged threads towards the middle seem to create surfaces. A fragile structure of threads stretching from floor to ceiling seems to dissolve in space and recompose to ever new appearances. Varying between transparent and closed surfaces, the spatial perception changes with each step taken through the installation. More images and architects’ description after the break.

According to fashionpersonnel.co.uk, it was actually the architect behind the store, Lewis and Hickey, who was awarded the honour by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

Innovative ‘living wall’
The award was given partly due to the site’s charging points for electric cars and innovative ‘living wall’, as well as the fact it was built most from reclaimed bricks. Its intelligent LED lighting has created energy savings of 25 per cent and the specialist collection system from rainwater has helped reduce water use.

Les engagements publics de l'ATELIER de MONTROUGE (1958-1981) | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
