Architecture Shall Live On / Architecture Manifesto

Architecture Shall Live On / Architecture Manifesto | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

I was honored to be asked to write a “Dear Destin” letter in the memory of my friend and teacher, Stephen Perrella (RIP). For a son (Destin) to know and understand his father through his legacy and the remnants of what was left behind is challenging but without memories we cannot be human. Without Architecture one cannot truly appreciate life. Great Architecture is all around us. It is important for us to celebrate it each and every day. It is important for all of us to reflect and teach the young ones around us what it means to be alive. To inhabit a great space is to love and to live. To me, great Architecture is a gift to be cherished.

Super-Surface Fabrication / Architectural Association Emergent Technologies

Super-Surface Fabrication / Architectural Association Emergent Technologies | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Super-surface fabrication workshop at the Architectural Association’s Emergent Technologies.
Digital generative tools coupled with rapid prototyping/fabrication techniques have permeated architectural education and practice at all levels.

The outcome of the design and production processes of any artefact (architectural or otherwise) are inextricably linked to the tools used in said processes. The study of design in conjunction with the tools used has been practiced since the times of Vitruvius, and it is only in the years following the Industrial Revolution up till the late 20th century, that the realm of architectural education has been divorced from that of fabrication. The rise of digital fabrication tools in architecture represents a return to previous practices, albeit in new media.

Tehran Stock Exchange Competition Entry / LAVA

Tehran Stock Exchange Competition Entry / LAVA | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Designed by LAVA, the proposal for the Tehran Stock Exchange fuses visionary geometries and forms with traditional elements of Persian culture. The vision seeks to define a new typology for the next century, mixing virtual and human interaction. Inspired by the local morphology such as cave houses, the building is envisioned as an urban rock, with smartly carved ovoid shapes enhancing natural light, panoramic views, interior spaces and the relationship with the surroundings. An interior light void maximizes fresh air and sunlight, while roof terraces add to the amenity of workers. More images and architects’ description after the break.

An Entire House That You Snap Together, Like A Toy

An Entire House That You Snap Together, Like A Toy | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
House-hunting? Soon, you can yank one right out of a machine.

A pair of Danish architects partnered with Facit homes, a London-based digital fabrication and architecture specialist, to construct a two-bedroom house out of parts produced in a rapid-prototyping machine. The 1,250-square-foot Villa Asserbo--named for the small Danish town 50 kilometers outside of Copenhagen, where the house sits--was built from 400 Forest Stewardship Council-certified Nordic plywood components designed in digital software, fabricated using a CNC miller, then snapped together (each part came with a number for easy assembly). All told, the house took just six weeks to build.

[Ex-Paña] Spain Mon Amour: 13 Bienal de Arquitectura de Venecia.

[Ex-Paña] Spain Mon Amour: 13 Bienal de Arquitectura de Venecia. | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

National Library of Israel Competition Entry / ODA | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

The proposal for the National Library of Israel by ODA takes on special significance as a site where past, present, and future converge. Unlike traditional libraries, often closed fortresses of knowledge, the new library is organized around a variety of platforms of activity that enhance interaction between the users, enabling the library to become a forum for cross-disciplinary conversations. Through the form of a floating monolith that visually connects to the foundations of Parliament, the library underscores the idea that education and learning are the bedrock of democracy.

#Shangai: edificio de 13 pisos acostado en el suelo | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

German-born and Beijing-based architect Ole Scheeren will reconstruct the wooden Archipelago Cinema within the old harbor basin Darsena Grande of the Arsenale, Venice’s historic shipyard, as an official collateral event for the 13th International Architecture Exhibition.

This unique, floating architectural experience became wildly popular when it was first conceived for the Film on the Rocks Yao Noi festival in Thailand.

Serving as a mobile stage for public events, the modular outdoor theater will feature a world premiere of the film Against All Rules. Continue after the break to learn more.

STEPIEN Y BARNO » 10 FALSOS TÓPICOS SOBRE LOS ARQUITECTOS. | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
