[Norway] Sustainable Technology at the National Museum of Art, Architecture & Design in Oslo, Norway

[Norway] Sustainable Technology at the National Museum of Art, Architecture & Design in Oslo, Norway | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

The new Museum of Modern Art needed to address the role and function of art in Oslo's city center, as a place for the interpretation of both the historical and contemporary reality. The museum uses twisted geometry standing on a massive footing to introduce series of event spaces, from landscape to interior exhibition to roofscape.

Facing the water front the massing rises and pedestrians are invited into the area through multiple accesses on the landscape, leading to the radial center of the museum lobby. The volume creates a protected plaza, or canopy for temporary outside exhibitions.

Sustainability: The technology came in the form of self-compacting concrete in which chemical additives are introduced into the concrete mix, significantly increasing its workability without any resultant loss in strength. The project is conceived like a bridge. Sustainable design integrates environmental, economic, and social issues of sustainability together with users’ goals and needs. The NMAAD Museum employs sustainable design to reduce energy consumption, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, encourage water conservation, and provide high indoor environmental quality.

The 8 Most [CRAZY] Interesting Ideas to Revolutionize Urban Farms

The 8 Most [CRAZY] Interesting Ideas to Revolutionize Urban Farms | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
These vertical spaces could change how we grow.

As the vertical farming trend has taken off in recent years, many architects and designers have begun tackling the question of how to marry agriculture with architecture. Here’s a look at some of our favorite concepts (most of them un-built) for fanciful food-producing pyramids, geodesic domes, flower pods, and insects

Visit the link for a list of conceptual projects ranging from Belgian architect Vincent Callebaut‘s design for the 132-story Dragonfly, a solar- and wind-powered vertical-garden concept for New York City’s Roosevelt Island— to Plantagon’s now-iconic design for a geodesic greenhouse...

["starchitectes" à Montpellier] Architecture : écrin scolaire | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Between Books & Trees: A unique, ecological design for a new public library

Between Books & Trees: A unique, ecological design for a new public library | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

JAJA shared their latest proposal, which was awarded third prize, for a new public library in Daegu, South Korea.

Pushing the boundary of the notion that a library must be a contained, quiet and nearly isolated space, JAJA’s proposal treats the library as massive public zone for the fostering of communal creativity, and dissolves the separation between inside and nature.

JAJA, typically noted for their form making abilities, have opted for a minimialistic formal language of the architecture, so that the streamlined library can capture the textures of the existing trees and the books within to create a cohesive experience that celebrates both.

“We propose to merge the spatial qualities of the trees and the potential of the library into one cohesive identity. The library will merge the exterior and interior through a series of spatial transitions within an inclusive environment for the local community,” explained the architects.

New green design methods to revolutionize the building industry...

New green design methods to revolutionize the building industry... | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

If you want a preview of the downtown Vancouver streetscape in 2035, start with a walk down Granville or Georgia Street today.

Most of the buildings will still be standing. There will be additions and replacements, but most of the changes that will transform downtown's living, work and retail space will be undetectable from the sidewalk. That includes upgrades to water and energy systems in buildings that in 2012 are models of inefficiency by contemporary standards, let alone future ones.

"If you are thinking 2035, realistically 80% of the buildings that will be in existence at that time have already been constructed," said Innes Hood, a professional engineer and senior associate with Stantec Consulting, a consulting firm with 12,000 planners, architects, engineers, project managers and experts, working in teams to break down the boundaries between designers, contractors and investors, while using advanced computer modelling programs.

Retrofits are crucial.

One of Hood's main assignments is overseeing the redevelopment of existing buildings. More often than not, that means uncovering, through energy audits, glaring examples of waste - air leaks, inadequate insulation, inefficient heating and ventilation systems.

"We are involved in residential projects where we can achieve 80-per-cent reduction in energy use and become essentially greenhouse gas neutral through the implementation of cost-effective technologies," Hood said. "We're not having to strive to the leading edge. These are tried and true technologies around good building enclosures and high-performance mechanical systems such as heat pump technology...

| The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Designed for the Luminale 2012 in Frankfurt, Germany, Kollision’s Photophore installation is a five storey veil of light that is operated by a smart phone. In order to make the veil act as if it being pushed, pulled or thrown in, the people on street can use an application: by scanning a QR code mounted on the façade, the users are brought to a website which invites them to swipe their finger across the touch screen of their smart phones.

The First Net-Zero-Energy Stadium Will Be In The Next World Cup | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
Brazil is about to do double-duty hosting international sporting events--first, the 2014 World Cup and then the 2016 Olympics. That means some serious sports center remodeling is in order.

The Estádio Nacional de Brasília, a stadium in the middle of Brazil’s capital (Brasília), is getting the most impressive upgrade, at least in our eyes. When it’s finished, the stadium should reach LEED Platinum certification and become the first net-zero-energy stadium in the world.

Israel + Capitalism + Politics - uncube

Israel + Capitalism + Politics - uncube | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

A project for the Israeli Pavilion at the 13th Venice Architecture Biennale
1973 marks a watershed in the workings of global capitalism, in the American strategic interest in the Middle East, and in Israel’s social, economic and political structures. Together, these elements, shaped by territorial struggles and energy crises, radically transformed Israeli architecture. The publication looks at the built environments that emerged as a result through a combination of contemporary visual commentary, historical materials, and texts on architecture in both the United States and Israel.

These environments not only tell the tale of an unprecedented embedding of liberal and capitalist principles in a country that was known as a socialist welfare-state, but of a cultural reorientation and an architectural agenda that is being questioned today, in light of another major crisis.
