Helsinki Central Library Competition Entry / PAR + Arup

Helsinki Central Library Competition Entry / PAR + Arup | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

In contrast to the other buildings in the Töölönlahti District of Helsinki, an essential component of the design by PAR and Arup for the Central Library involved creating a public space at the top of the library—visually connecting Töölönlahti to Senate Square and the city at large.

The library is organized by six intersecting axes that afford spectacular vistas while creating a variety of spatial configurations for the library’s program. With it’s six floor levels each pointing toward a celebrated landmark, the Central Library becomes a symbolic center for city.

Said to be Sydney’s most distinctive project since the Opera House, Frank Gehry‘s, in collaboration with construction giant Lend Lease, will design and construct the new 12-storey UTS building consisting of 320,000 homely brown bricks, laid by hand. Due to be completed in mid-2014, Mr. Gehry has described the building’s internal structure as being like a “tree house”, designed to encourage a sense of “creative play”. The Louvre Abu Dhabi Museum, designed by Ateliers Jean Nouvel, aims at creating a welcoming world which associates lights and shadows as well as shimmers and calm places in a serene atmosphere. Its objective is to belong to its country, to its history, to its geography, avoiding being either a dull translation of this reality or a pleonasm meaning boredom and convention. It also aims at emphasizing the fascination generated by rare encounters. More images and architects’ description after the break.

architecture/code/art...

I’m Andrew Heumann. I’m a third-year architecture student at Cornell University with a passion for digital methods. My current weapons of choice are Photoshop, Rhino, Grasshopper, and Processing, and this blog will largely feature work in those programs. I intend it as a place to record my own creative and computational experimentation as well as share it with others.

I just finished putting together a beta version of a little project. It’s a tweetbot powered by a grasshopper definition. The bot transforms a cube according to a series of operations you specify, and then tweets a picture of the resulting form. There are currently 10 formal operations that the bot understands:

The architect at work: 425 Park Ave

The architect at work: 425 Park Ave | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

A few months ago we informed you about a competition to re develop the massive “wedding-cake” style building at 425 Park Ave in NY, near Mies’ Seagram Building and SOM’s Lever House. The objective of the developer, L&L Holding, was to turn this project into the next iconic building of the city, and for that they invited a group of eleven renowned practices, including ten Pritzker laureates.

The shortlist was announced in October, and included OMA, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, Zaha Hadid Architects and Foster + Partners, which was later announced as the winner of the competition a few weeks ago.

Over the last days, the presentations of the architects to the clients appeared on YouTube, and now we have the opportunity to see these interesting group of architects doing a fundamental part of their work. In the videos we see each architect using their own presentation style, either a PPT, video or just physical boards, connecting it to the practice’s research and discourse, projecting their passion about certain features of their projects and engaging with the client around their main objective: to turn this into an iconic project.

Absolutely Prefab: A Single-Family Residential Tower That Sprawls Up, Not Out

Absolutely Prefab: A Single-Family Residential Tower That Sprawls Up, Not Out | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

It’s not often that a European architect approaches American-style tract housing with anything resembling desire. But on a tour of the modernist developer Joseph Eichler’s homes in and around San Francisco, the Dutch architect Hans van Heeswijk was taken with the region’s hilly expanses of single-family homes. Imposing that style of development onto the already saturated Dutch Randstad—the urban super-region comprising Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht—is obviously out of the question, but California’s spaciousness got Heeswijk thinking about how to build a Dutch residence with the same sense of air and possibility

[Finland] Helsinki Central Library Competition Entry / OODA | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

The proposal for the Helsinki Central Library by OODA tries to merge the most efficient program articulation with a strong concept which intends to suggest the overall theme integrated with Helsinki’s context. Their building acts as a shifting point between the two demarked city urban networks – ancient and modern – merging both, creating a public path that connects to the park while it simultaneously generates the formal composition. The new central library will be much more than a traditional library. It will be a dynamic entity, fully equipped, comprised of the physical spaces themselves as well as technology, library collections, staff, tourists in an all-age designed forefront building. More images and architects’ description after the break.

SANAA Unveils Winning Design For [Spaghetti] Milanese Campus | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

This morning SANAA presented its winning design for Bocconi University’s new campus in Milan. Currently just a sketch, the project proposes playful footprints that resemble a Joan Miró composition. The approach seems to be building on the success of the fluid, interlocking spaces of the Rolex Learning Center in Lausanne. The campus will accommodate the Bocconi Business School, a sports center, and student dormitories surrounded by 5 green, public acres

Forget the Rankings, the BEST US Architecture Schools for 2013 Are… | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Every year, when DesignIntelligence’s latest rankings of the Best US Architecture Schools comes out, most of the anticipation is centered around one question: who’s number 1?

But despite our laser-focus on the rankings, the report is actually much more. It is also a survey of hundreds of design educators and professionals, an invaluable insight into the current state of architecture and architecture education today.

So with this in mind, and with the rankings aside, which universities are really producing students best equipped (and most marketable, in this competitive market) for the architecture profession today? When you look at the data, only two Universities stand out from the pack.

Amazing urban photography by Niki Feijen

Amazing urban photography by Niki Feijen | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

“ I was born in 1977 in Eindhoven, located in the south of The Netherlands. Although it’s not my profession, I’ve been experimenting with photography ever since I was a kid. After a diversity of photography directions (Landscapes, Sports, Concerts), I discovered Urbex photography.

Urbex, short for Urban Exploring is according to Wikipedia: The examination of the normally unseen or off-limits parts of urban areas or industrial facilities. So basically visiting and photographing abandoned buildings, tunnels, industry, castles etc. Most of my shots are HDR shots, short for High Dynamic Range. HDR is perfect for low light locations but it has to be subtle. Besides Urbex, I have this crazy stairs addiction. I can spend hours underneath a staircase just to take that one awesome shot. A stairwell or an atmospheric urbex shot can turn into something very special, almost a piece of art. That’s the exactly what I want to show people; the beauty of decay, the Art of Urbex. “ ~ Niki Feijen

La maquette d'architecture vit-elle ses derniers jours ? | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
