驚人的全玻璃透明房屋 - Santambrogio on KAIAK LIFE | 生活美學的新態度 | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Pernambuco Arena / Fernandes Arquitetos Associados | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

With a seating capacity of 46,000, the Pernambuco Arena will host the games in the group stage and quarter-finals of the World Cup 2014. Designed by Fernandes Arquitetos Associados, the main peculiarity of the project, and what makes it stand out from other projects of cities hosting the FIFA World Cup 2014, is that it is not being built in a consolidated urban area. The design challenge of this project is the creation of a building that is fully integrated into the natural environment and that in a second moment can establish a relationship of unity with the future urban development planned for the region. Sustainable Olympic stadium: a leader in the global green movement... | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

With its red running tracks surrounded by black and white seats and floodlights stretching above the roof, London’s elliptically shaped Olympic Stadium resembles many other sporting venues.

But the building’s principal designer, Philip Johnson, believes it will lead a global movement towards sustainable architecture.

Mostly lightweight steel was used in the construction, the roof is made of PVC and the stadium boasts a fabric curtain, designed to minimize crosswinds. Moreover, the water collected from the roof is used to flush the toilets, while the earth embankments that surround the stadium protect the biodiversity of the site by encouraging plants to grow.

“We want to use as little material as possible,” said Johnson, of the architectural consultancy, Populous, which is headquartered in the US city of Kansas, but has offices around the world, including one in the British capital...

Can the World Really Afford More Empty Cities?

Can the World Really Afford More Empty Cities? | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
Architecture that does not have a function, is not appreciated or that stands unused has no place in a world that consumes as many naturally resources as ours.

The global building industry caters to the needs of billions, but it also is the highest consumer of these resources, meaning that there must be a level of responsibility in play that restricts unnecessary works at all costs.
However, an increasing number of urban development projects are being undertaken that are unused and unnecessary. These ‘ghost towns’ stand as an outdated and regressive waste in the meantime, although they are often justified as a long-term development goal...

Installations olympiques, régénération urbaine et tourisme (Téoros) | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

BIG architects: natural history museum proposal

BIG architects: natural history museum proposal | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
BIG architects' proposal for the new natural history museum in denmark is a man-made mineral landscape which adapts to the
organic forms of the botanical garden situated in the centre of copenhagen where the institution is located - their extension is a
formation of rocks which intersect with the surrounding green park landscape.

above ground, the site's existing geological garden stands as the public entrance plaza where all services and activities are
housed below the overhead perforated stone surface of the new annex. the botanical garden is an addition
to the current romantic garden on the premises. this green space gets a discreet cut into the surrounding environment
providing garden views from the interior of the structure, while also offering glimpses into the galleries themselves from the exterior.
both the geological and botanical gardens incorporate exhibition functions underground.

the two main programs of the building are the grand whale hall and greenhouses, both of which are sunken into the land
and shaped by the structural grid, incorporating exhibition functions underground.

the public scopes are housed at ground level making them easily accessible. the grand whale hall - which exhibits some of the
oldest skeletons found on earth - becomes the new heart of the museum. the first subterranean level connects all of the buildings
already on site to form a continuous exhibition loop which starts and ends with this central area. the galleries and greenhouses
within this section receive daylight through skylights in the landscape. the second subgrade level encompasses all spaces
which don't require any daylight intake such as storage spaces and light-sensitive exhibitions.

INTERVIEW: Tweaking the Code, Greening the City

INTERVIEW: Tweaking the Code, Greening the City | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
The second in a series of five interviews with staffers at the New York City Department of City Planning.

The interviewer interned while pursuing a master’s degree in urban planning. Read the first installment at americancity.org.

This past spring, the New York City Council adopted Zone Green, dozens of pages worth of tweaks to the city’s zoning code that make it easier for property owners and developers to work environmentally friendly features — from rooftop greenhouses to insulated walls — into new and existing buildings throughout the city. Here Monika Jain, project manager of the DCP-led effort and an urban designer with the department’s zoning division, talks about the ambitious overhaul that’s been two years in the making...

The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
