Beautiful Connection with the Landscape in Ridge Road Residence by StudioFour | Extreme Architecture | News, E-learning, Architecture of the future at news.arcilook.com | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

StudioFour have completed the Ridge Road residence, located on the Mornington Peninsula in Australia. A simple brief and programming requirements, teamed with a dramatic site characterised by a steep slope and a single tea tree, enabled the design to become an exploration into enclosing the basic rituals of domestic life within restrained building forms…the form of the building becomes driven by the clients desire to separate the public and private zones of the residence.

[ CHINA ] EASTERN design office: Tower of Ring, Tianjin | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

In Tianjin, the 'tower of ring' by japanese firm EASTERN design office is a tower with prospects of becoming a recognizable structure
and symbol for china. positioned within a big square, the tubular building is composed of stacked rings with an undulating profile
creating a pattern of eye-shaped voids. the open framework interacts with the changing sky throughout the day. only experienced at ground level,
sunlight filters into the empty structure without a way to access the form itself.

Located next to a new race track and a dragster speedway, the museum designed by MARC ANTON DAHMEN / STUDIO DMTW is another component of the projected “Motor Sports Complex“ in Kuwait City. Its main function is to be a public showroom for the King‘s private collection of vintage racing cars. Lebbeus Woods (1940-2012): Building Landscapes

Lebbeus Woods (1940-2012): Building Landscapes | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

"A few architects have explored the possibilities of fusing buildings and landscapes [...] While such are not in themselves inherently ecological, this approach indicates a sensibility that could lead in that direction. At the very least, it manifests a different attitude toward architecture, one that plays down a heroic conquest of nature and looks for modes of coexistence with it. As in all cases of coexistence, neither presence is sacrificed at the expense of the other; rather, each impacts the other in creating—hopefully—a balance, even a new form of harmony." Lebbeus Woods (1940-2012)

Exodus, el imperio de la cínica

Exodus, el imperio de la cínica | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

10 US College Campuses with Architecture by Pritzker Prize Winners

10 US College Campuses with Architecture by Pritzker Prize Winners | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
Each school on this list can boast projects by at least two Pritzker winners.

Harvard University
This country’s oldest university is a veritable museum of architecture from colonial to postmodern, though of course only very recent practitioners have had the chance to earn a Pritzker. British architect James Stirling, the third recipient of the Pritzker in 1981, designed the Arthur M. Sackler Museum, which houses Harvard’s Asian arts collection. However, that collection, along with those of the Fogg and Busch-Reisinger art museums, will be moved to a new facility by 1998 Pritzker honoree Renzo Piano. Rafael Moneo, who won the prize in 1996 and teaches at Harvard’s renowned Graduate School of Design, recently designed the Laboratory for Integrated Science and Engineering.

Yale University
Harvard’s eternal Ivy League rival can claim an equally impressive collection of architecture. The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library is one of the most famous commissions of Gordon Bunshaft, the Skidmore, Owings and Merrill architect who won a Pritzker in 1988 after waging a nomination campaign for himself. Yale alumnus and 1989 winner Frank O. Gehry’s Yale Psychiatric Institute is his sole building on campus. Irish-born architect Kevin Roche, who won in 1982, expanded and renovated his mentor Eero Saarinen’s David S. Ingalls Rink, known as the “Yale Whale.”

University of Pennsylvania
Though unlike his comrade and University of Virginia founder/designer Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin could not add “architect” to his mind-boggling resume, the university he founded has one of the nation’s best graduate schools of architecture and many great buildings. 1991 Pritzker winner Robert Venturi, a native Philadelphian and Penn professor, designed the Perelman Quadrangle and restored the Fisher Fine Arts Building. Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki, who won in 1993, is responsible for the beautiful glass-over-wood Annenberg Public Policy Center.

New York University
NYU showcases the work of no less than four Pritzker architects. Philip Johnson, the winner of the first prize in 1979, created a master plan for the Washington Square campus in the 1960s and designed the Elmer Holmes Bobst Library. 1983 winner I. M. Pei’s residential Silver Towers were recently given preserved status in order to prevent a controversial fourth building from going up. Kevin Roche designed the Kimmel Center for University Life. And a young Robert Venturi’s first commission was to renovate the interior of the James B. Duke House to contain NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts.

Columbia University
I.M. Pei created a master plan for Columbia in 1970 that was never used, but Renzo Piano’s plan for a new West Harlem campus is in the works. Meanwhile, Rafael Moneo is the architect behind the striking Northwest Corner science building.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology
MIT is home to one of Frank Gehry’s wildest creations, the Stata Center, which soon became the subject of a lawsuit over leaks (as in rainwater, not trade secrets). I. M. Pei, an MIT alumnus and certainly the defining modern architect of the Boston region, is responsible for the plan of the campus’s southeast corner, as well as buildings including the Green Building (later turned into a giant Tetris game!), the Dreyfus Building, the Landau Building, the Weisner Building. Kevin Roche designed MIT’s Zesiger Sports & Fitness Center.

Cornell University
1984 winner Richard Meier was chosen by his alma mater to create Weill Hall, which received LEED Gold certification for its living roof and eco-friendly energy plan. Rem Koolhaas, too, once studied at Cornell, and recently designed Milstein Hall to house its architecture program. The Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art is one of I. M. Pei’s bolder conceptions, while James Stirling can take credit for the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. Finally, 2005 recipient Thom Mayne of the Morphosis firm will design the building for the Technion-Cornell Innovation Institute, though that will be on Roosevelt Island in New York City rather than at the main Ithaca campus.

Princeton University
Robert Venturi, a Princeton graduate, designed Wu Hall, the Lewis Thomas Laboratory, Fisher and Bendheim Halls, Schultz Laboratory and the Frist Campus Center. I. M. Pei’s Spelman Hall is a dormitory building with an unconventional layout. Frank Gehry’s Lewis Library is now open (despite delays and even a contractor bribery scandal!), and Rafael Moneo’s Princeton Neuroscience Institute complex will open in spring 2013.

University of Michigan – Ann Arbor
Robert Venturi helped Michigan with a campus master plan and designed the Undergraduate Science Building, Life Sciences Institute and Palmer Commons complex. Kevin Roche is the architect behind the Power Center for the Performing Arts.

University of Cincinnati
Thom Mayne and Morphosis created Cincinnati’s Campus Recreation Center, while the Vontz Center for Molecular Studies is an example of a more restrained use of materials by Frank Gehry that helps foreground his always assertive use of shape.

3rd Grand Central Terminal proposal includes a 'podium park' and skyscraper

3rd Grand Central Terminal proposal includes a 'podium park' and skyscraper | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

WXY Architecture have suggested a skyscraper and a network of elevated cycling paths for the future of New York's Grand Central Terminal.

Alongside other firms Foster + Parters and SOM, the architects were invited by the Municipal Art Society of New York to look at the public spaces in and around the 100-year-old station then come up with a strategy for the future.

Like Foster + Partners, WXY Architecture proposes the pedestrian station of Vanderbilt Avenue, above which an elevated deck would surround the base of the 250-metre-high MetLife Building. The architects refer to this deck as a “podium park”, which would feature transparent glass paving and seasonal plants, plus routes for cyclists and pedestrians and spaces to pause for reflection.

“The plan for Midtown’s near future needs to make the Grand Central neighbourhood a place people enjoy being in not just running through,” said WXY’s Claire Weisz.
