“Permanently UNFINISHED”: The Evolution of Architecture in the Galapagos Islands

“Permanently UNFINISHED”: The Evolution of Architecture in the Galapagos Islands | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
Most visitors to the Galapagos Islands point their cameras towards the exotic animals and away from the local people. They direct their full attention to the natural landscape, as if to intentionally deny the existence of the urban space of the city, since the presence of any form of architecture would seem in logical conflict with the islands’ identity as a protected wildlife reserve.

The architecture of the Galapagos is both a conceptual and physical contradiction. Like a Piranesian joke, the San Cristobal typology of the proto-ruin falls somewhere on a spectrum between construction and dismantlement. With their “permanently unfinished” construction state seemingly in flux, it is unclear whether many of these buildings display a common optimism for vertical expansion or are instead symptoms of a process of urban decay.

“Siza’s houses are just like CATS sleeping in the sun.” | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Throughout the 60-year career of Álvaro Siza, his work has continuously defied categorization--having variously been described as “critical regionalism” and “poetic modernism,” with neither quite capturing the true essence of Siza's intuitive architecture. In this interview, the latest in Vladimir Belogolovsky's “City of Ideas” series, Siza discusses those attempts to categorize his work, his design approach and the role of beauty in his designs.

Vladimir Belogolovsky: Your student, Eduardo Souto de Moura said, “Siza’s houses are just like cats sleeping in the sun.”

Álvaro Siza: [Laughs.] Yes, he meant that my buildings assume the most natural postures on the site. There is also a reference in that to the human body.

10 Technologies Architects SHOULD Embrace in 2017

10 Technologies Architects SHOULD Embrace in 2017 | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
It’s been a pretty special year for architects when it comes to technology. We’ve seen architectural apps become increasingly ubiquitous, hardware from the likes of Microsoft and HP that is more than a match for Apple, not to mention an exponential growth in our fascination with virtual and augmented reality. Innovative technology in the realm of architecture has begun to be rolled out with such regularity that we even created a dedicated new blog page for it.

The question is: Which of the many tech developments unveiled throughout the last 12 months are merely gimmicks that will disappear as fast as they arrived, and which are here to stay, becoming permanent fixtures within professional practice? We’ve compiled a list of 10 technologies that will proliferate during 2017, including hardware and software that architects should embrace both in the studio and on the construction site.

[Paris 13] Renzo Piano designs glass "organic creature" to house Pathé Foundation | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

These photographs show the bulbous form of Renzo Piano's almost-complete Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé, which nestles within a Parisian urban block.

Renzo Piano Building Workshop designed the "organic creature" in the courtyard of a 19th-century block to house the new headquarters of the Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé – dedicated to preserving the history of French film company Pathé and promoting cinematography.

The egg-shaped form connects to the surrounding Haussmann-era buildings at four points. Its form curves away from the existing buildings and its top peeks over the roofline.

Steven Holl’s BRIDGE of Houses (1979-1982)

Steven Holl’s BRIDGE of Houses (1979-1982) | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
Throughout history bridges have been a focus of legends of every civilization. Esthetes, philosophers and poets have used the bridge as a transcendent form. (Excerpt from Steven Holl website presentation of PA #7 – Author unknown)

During the first years of his career and up to the early 1980’s, architect Steven Holl engaged in the design of a number of conceptual proposals, never-to-be-built projects destined to foster speculation and investigation on architectural thought.

Many of these speculations ended being collected and published in Holl’s 1978 co-founded Pamphlet Architecture series, (read our review of Pamphlet Architecture 11-20, Princeton Architectural Press) a monographic review created as a venue to stimulate research and that was curated, written and designed by a single architect for each issue.

The BEST Architecture Drawings of 2016

The BEST Architecture Drawings of 2016 | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
Designing and building a project is a challenge in itself. However, once the project is complete there are also challenges in expressing the project so that it can be understood by a new audience. This is especially true in digital media, where online readers don't necessarily spend the same time reading an article as in print media. This way, drawings and all visual representation and it's new forms -such as the animated Gifs- play an important role in the project's understanding

At ArchDaily we push ourselves as editors, as well as the architects in our network, to get the best out of the projects we receive and share with the world so that we can deliver knowledge and inspiration to millions of people. The drawings we chose are not only visually entertaining but they serve as a way of educating and learning on particular issues where architectural representation is fundamental.

Regardless if they are digital or hand-drawn, all the architectural drawings we have selected this year have a sensitive expression, whether it be artistic, technical or conceptual, they all aim to express and explain the project using simplicity, detail, textures, 3D and color as main tools.

This year we want to highlight a selection of 90 drawings arranged under eight categories: Architectural Drawings, Axonometrics, Context, Diagrams, Sketches, Animated Gifs, Details and Other Techniques

THE ARCHITECT’S STUDIO
WANG SHU
9.2.2017 - 30.4.2017
The Architect’s Studio is a new series of Louisiana exhibitions focusing on a new generation of pace-setting and prize-winning architects. The series intends to show developments among contemporary architects whose sustainable and socially aware practices take on the challenges of globalization.

The first exhibition of this series focuses on Chinese architect Wang Shu (b. 1963), who in 2012 was awarded the Pritzker-Prize, dubbed the Nobel Prize for architecture. Wang Shu and his wife Lu Wenyu stand at the head of the Amateur Architecture Studio based in Hangzhou in China. The name of the studio underscores the vision of letting spontaneity, the available materials and local culture and building traditions form the basis for architecture which in Wang Shu’s own words should be “a house rather than a building”.

The specific design of the exhibition is being created in collaboration with Amateur Architecture, and besides presenting selected projects will include a more general introduction to traditional Chinese culture and philosophy as declared sources of inspiration for Wang Shu. In addition Amateur Architecture’s installation At The Parallel Scene from the 2016 Venice Biennale will form part of the exhibition.

Area : 135.0 m2

Project Year : 2016

Photographs : Alexandre Zelinski

Manufacturers :

The project Container, located in the port city of Itajaí (SC) aims to intervene on a conceptual model, interact with sustainability issues, propose an industrialized modular construction and at the same time make possible, through architecture and creativity, the approximation with the Nature and art.

The project has two monolithic warehouse volumes, each using two overlapping containers, by a zenith opening system that "distances" the volumes and houses the vertical circulations. This system is designed to reduce the use of artificial lighting. On the containers are installed two large garden roofs that fulfill several functions: reduce the impact of solar radiation, capture rainwater for reuse and be a reservoir of rainwater, reducing the impact on the public collection system. They also propose to neighbors as an "urban gentleness", bringing colors and visual comfort to the residents of the neighboring buildings.

How COMBINING Social Housing with Tourism Could Help Solve Havana’s Housing Crisis

How COMBINING Social Housing with Tourism Could Help Solve Havana’s Housing Crisis | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
The largest of the Caribbean islands, Cuba is a cultural melting pot of over 11 million people, combining native Taíno and Ciboney people with descendants of Spanish colonists and African slaves. Since the 1959 revolution led by Fidel Castro, the country has been the only stable communist regime in the Western hemisphere, with close ties to the Soviet Union during the Cold War and frosty relationship with its nearby neighbor, the United States, that has only recently begun to thaw. While the architecture in the capital city of Havana reflects the dynamic and rich history of the area, after the revolution Havana lost its priority status and government focus shifted to rural areas, and the buildings of Havana have been left to ruin ever since. Iwo Borkowicz, one of three winners of the 2016 Young Talent Architecture Award, has developed a plan that could bring some vibrancy, and most importantly some sustainability, back to Havana, the historic core of the city.
