How Venezuela’s Espacios de Paz Project is Transforming Community Spaces

How Venezuela’s Espacios de Paz Project is Transforming Community Spaces | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

The Espacios de Paz (Spaces for Peace) project inVenezuela is turning “zones of danger” into “zones of peace” through participatory design in violent areas of the country. Led by Venezuelan firm PICO Estudio, Espacios de Paz was a six-week long workshop that involved five groups of architects from both Venezuela as well as internationally. Each group focused on developing a project in a community with a high presence of violence. By transforming unused spaces such as empty plots and unregulated landfill areas, the projects sought to create “social dynamics that invite new ways of living in communities, transforming categories that rule the daily life: the use of time and space.” Community involvement in project development was also key to the Espacios de Paz initiative, which sought to  create “a space built not only “for” the community but “by” the community.”

Shelf Life: 33 Book Recommendations From Architects & Designers

Shelf Life: 33 Book Recommendations From Architects & Designers | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Architects often don’t make time to read. Students and professionals alike will admit that the unread books on their shelves outnumber the ones they’ve read - which is unfortunate because literary contributions to the field of architecture, from Vitruvius to Le Corbusier, have shaped the way we build and use buildings for centuries. With this in mind, ArchitectureBoston polled their readers, asking them to share their favorite architecture and design titles, to compile a list of important architecture books you should set aside some time for. The list covers a wide range of subjects, from historical theory to the practicalities of starting a firm.

" LES VILLES DE FRANK GEHRY " -www.artpress.com

" LES VILLES DE FRANK GEHRY " -www.artpress.com | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

BIG's Smithsonian Plan is the Latest Museum Design to Go Underground

BIG's Smithsonian Plan is the Latest Museum Design to Go Underground | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

The Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) plan for the Smithsonian follows a current trend in museum design to put things underground. The strategy makes sense on several levels. First, it preserves public open space. Second, it avoids making monuments that can make art precincts seem forbidding and inaccessible, as well as sidestepping approval processes in which authorities or neighbors might object to new buildings. Third, it lets institutions connect spaces below ground, and then pop up objects to catch light and signal the museum's presence. Finally, it makes a certain amount of sense from a sustainability standpoint to reuse the land by placing functions underneath public space and using the earth for insulation.

The WORKING Drawing: The Architect's Tool

The WORKING Drawing: The Architect's Tool | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
Large-scale working drawings are one of the fundamental tools in architecture, crucial from the early stages of creation up through the actual construction of buildings. Surprisingly, however, there has been very little published analysis of this tool. The Working Drawing fills that gap, drawing on a vast collection of working drawings held by the Department of Architecture of ETH Zurich.

Annette Spiro, who assembled and categorized the collection itself, here presents one hundred highlights, with the assistance of coeditor David Ganzoni. The drawings featured span more than five centuries, cover a range of architectural tasks, and display a striking array of representational techniques. All the drawings are presented in full-color via large-trim spreads or fold-outs, accompanied by full catalog information and actual-size detail shots. The buildings featured range from masterpieces such as St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome to contemporary classics by Peter Zumthor, Diller + Scofidio, and more. Twelve essays by renowned authors thread through the volume, giving context and analyzing the different approaches. The result is a landmark volume, sure to be of value both to students and to practicing architects.

Richard Rogers says architects "have a DUTY to society"

Richard Rogers says architects "have a DUTY to society" | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

on the eve of a major exhibition about his life, architect Richard Rogers has spoken of how architecture's civic responsibility has been eroded in "an age of greed". Update: this interview is featured in Dezeen Book of Interviews, which is on sale now for £12.

"In my generation the idea was you'd build for the future," Rogers told Dezeen. "We'd just had a horrible war and there was this very strong feeling that the state could be enriched by the way we played out our abilities."

He added: "This has gone. It's much more an age of greed. It's much more about dog eat dog and the acceptance that it doesn't matter what you earn, you have no duty to society."

Construction starts on Smith and Gill's ice-inspired China skyscraper

Construction starts on Smith and Gill's ice-inspired China skyscraper | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Construction has started in Chengdu, China, on a 468-metre-high crystalline skyscraper by the architects behind the current and future tallest buildings in the world.

The Greenland Tower Chengdu was designed by Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill – the former SOM architects responsible for both the Burj Khalifa and the forthcoming Kingdom Tower – and is set to become the tallest building in south-western China. According to the architects, the faceted-glass form of the office and hotel tower was "inspired by the unique ice mountain topography around Chengdu".

"Like the mountain ridges reflecting the light of the sky and the valleys reflecting light from the earth, the iconic tower will perform as a light sculpture to diffuse light from 360 degrees, creating a connection between sky and earth," said the studio in a statement.

Moshe Safdie Creates Spectacular Bio Dome for Singapore Airport

Moshe Safdie Creates Spectacular Bio Dome for Singapore Airport | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Moshe Safdie is famous for his iconic Montreal housing complex Habitat ’67, and he is still creating innovative large-scale urban projects around the world. The latest project his firm, Safdie Architects, has debuted is the design for development at Singapore's Changi Airport. The scheme aims to create a public gathering space with gardens, retail stores, hotel, restaurants, and entertainment that will lure travelers, airport employees, and local residents.

The glass dome will encompass a space of 134,000 square meters and houses a 130-foot-high waterfall. The dome's curved shape, recalling the tradition of glass conservatories, provides inherent structural strength to the glass and steel structure. Tree-like structural columns in a ring support the dome while a suspended roof covers the adjacent atrium space.

The space also showcases natural elements: walking trails travel through an indoor topography of trees, palms, and ferns called "Forest Valley". The different elements — dining, accommodations, and retail — are spread throughout the structure so as to give each of them impressive views of the natural features.
