The Next Helsinki: an alternative call for ideas, for a new Guggenheim building

The Next Helsinki: an alternative call for ideas, for a new Guggenheim building | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Helsinki is one of the world’s great cities – a beautiful and cultivated place, dancing by the water. But it is a city – like all others – with real needs.  For housing that is abundant and affordable. For an on-going retrofit for sustainability that is such an urgent part of the future of all the world’s cities. For rational transportation. For inventive platforms for experiencing and producing art. And for public spaces and a public culture that can generate decent livelihoods and be accountable to communities.

We call upon architects, urbanists, landscape architects, artists, environmentalists, students, activists, poets, politicians, and all others who love cities to suggest ways in which Helsinki and its South Harbor can be transformed for the maximum benefit of the city. We invite submissions that devise this transformation at whatever scale – and whatever medium – contributors consider appropriate: the site itself, the harbor, the city, the country.

Every city on earth, it seems, dreams of the salvation of the Bilbao effect. What if one very special building, designed by one very special architect, and sponsored by one very special private museum, could land in its midst and transform a moribund economy and under-cultured citizenry at a stroke into a teeming nexus of tourism and world class art?

Now, the Guggenheim Foundation has launched a design competition on one of Helsinki’s most valuable and compelling physical sites for a new Guggenheim building, in hopes of a transformation akin to the “miracle” in Spain. The City of Helsinki is tempted to spend hundreds of millions of municipal euros in return for the benefits of the branding of the city with someone else’s mark. – Is this really the best use for the site and tax money?

What if there was an alternative call for ideas – open to all – to rise to the challenge of imagining a richer future for the whole city? A ‘competition’ that takes as its starting points the existing structures and needs of the city itself? What if it could help Helsinki evolve as a more accessible, equitable, sustainable, and beautiful place?  What if it could help develop beneficial cultural strategies that grow from the specifics of the local scene and from the needs of contemporary art practices? What if there were realizable alternatives to the trends of luxury branding, mono-culturization, top-down decision-making processes and privatization of common goods?

Help us seize this opportunity to highlight the city’s singularity, and its residents’ appetite for social, environmental and cultural justice. We challenge you to send us your realistic, visionary and well researched ideas for the Next Helsinki!

The jury and the organizers will try to ensure that the most provocative, thoughtful, and artfully presented contributions get a full public airing in Helsinki and New York, with the goal of seeing them widely aired and realized.

The Architect’s Guide to Life in OUTER SPACE

The Architect’s Guide to Life in OUTER SPACE | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Space stations have been a part of sci-fi iconography for more than a century. Propelled by the technological innovations of the Second Industrial Revolution—including the automobile, the airplane, electrification, and modern communication systems—the idea of living in space inspired a new era of science fiction.

The first manifestation of a space habitat appeared in Edward Everett Hale’s “The Brick Moon,” a short story in which a spherical satellite entirely built of bricks is inadvertently launched into orbit with people on board. Written in the form of a journal, “The Brick Moon” was originally published as a series in The Atlantic Monthly, starting in 1869, and is the earliest known reference to an inhabited structure in outer space.

The buidling stands on a trapezoid site more or less defined by surrounding buildings on three sides, and by Sheffield Street on the fourth. Its shape is determined by the stringent daylight requirements of their neighbours

Its main entrance is a porch, a triangle nicked out of the block of the building opposite where St Clement’s Lane meets Sheffield Street. It is covered by a steeply sloping and wood-framed glass canopy that rises over three floors, while the paving of the porch extends into the landscaped area of the pedestrianised Sheffield Street.

Two entrances open from the porch: the main one to a narrow entrance hall and the reception desk which leads directly to the wide and brightly lit staircase that winds round the lift shaft all the way up the building.

The secondary entrance leads to a ground-level ‘pub’ - also accessible from the reception area, and to a wide concrete circular staircase which goes down to an acoustically insulated nightclub.

[Santiago de Chile] Video: Innovation Center UC – Anacleto Angelini / Alejandro Aravena | ELEMENTAL | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Chile is recognized internationally for the quality of its architecture, even though its most lauded projects are not often found in urban areas. At a time when the true potential of Chilean architecture seems absent from the South American country’s cities, Alejandro Aravena | ELEMENTAL has designed a conceptually – and physically – dense project in Santiago.

In this ArchDaily exclusive video, ELEMENTAL‘s director Alejandro Aravena explains the concepts that shaped the form and delineated the design process of the Pontifical Catholic University’s Innovation Center UC – Anacelto Angelini. Instead of using materials that are usually associated with technology and innovation, such as glass and steel, Aravena uses concrete and its hermetic, weighty properties to imbue the center with an air of timelessness and transcendence.

Ban’s vision for the new AAM is based on transparency and open view planes—inviting those outside to engage with the building’s interior, and providing those inside the opportunity to see their exterior surroundings.

Renzo Piano, ARCHI-humaniste

Renzo Piano, ARCHI-humaniste | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

A Helsinki, les anti-Guggenheim s'organisent | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

à peine perdue : verre et acier_mauvaise nouvelle | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
