5 Reasons Architects Should LEARN to Code

5 Reasons Architects Should LEARN to Code | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

In his popular post on how architects can “work smarter, not harder,” Michael Kilkelly suggests that you should ”customize your tools to work the way you work” and “use macros to automate repetitive tasks.” Both sound very helpful of course, but wouldn’t those require you to to write some code? Yes – but according to Kilkelly this should be a tool available in every architect’s toolkit. Originally published on ArchSmarter, here he offers 5 reasons that architects should learn to code.

[Charles Correa] multiples ESTRATEGIAS de arquitectura: NOVEDADES

[Charles Correa] multiples ESTRATEGIAS de arquitectura: NOVEDADES | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

25 Ideas Shaping The Future Of Design ::: THE INTERNET OF THINGS WILL LEAD TO THE INTERNET OF SPACE

25 Ideas Shaping The Future Of Design ::: THE INTERNET OF THINGS WILL LEAD TO THE INTERNET OF SPACE | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

THE INTERNET OF THINGS WILL LEAD to

THE INTERNET OF SPACES

The Internet of Things usually refers to technologies like Nest and Fitbit, but one does not make something "smarter" simply by placing a circuit board in it and connecting it to a network. There will also be vast ramifications for the way we design products and spaces. The converging requirements of aging baby boomers and technology-embracing millennials will lead designers to focus on where product design and architecture intersect and inform one another to create better outcomes. — James R. Wisniewski, Senior Associate - Architecture, Michael Graves Architecture & Design

The Cursed Square: THE LONG SEARCH FOR WARSAW MOMA’S NEW HOME

The Cursed Square: THE LONG SEARCH FOR WARSAW MOMA’S NEW HOME | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

In our final blog piece for our month of Poland, we look at the serial attempts to design, let alone build, a new Museum for Modern Art in Warsaw. It’s a cautionary tale that can be seen to sum up many of the issues from the past 20 years of the city’s rocky architectural and planning history, yet one that may still have a happy ending.

If one wanted to pick a city as a case study for European urban development over the last 1,000 years – warts and all – Warsaw would be a good candidate. Over a relatively small area, Poland’s capital somewhat inharmoniously unites elements that appear drawn from a medieval city, a Renaissance city, and neo-classical planning, mixed together with the freestanding blocks of post-war housing, stacking up higher and higher towards the city centre, only to be overshadowed there by the glass-and-steel skyscrapers of contemporary turbo-capitalism. Basically it’s an urban mess, cut to pieces by vast axes of traffic infrastructure.

At the very heart of this odd collage city lies a square, seemingly as cursed as it is huge: Plac Defilad or “Parade Square”. This 25 hectare expanse of emptiness was created in the 1950s amidst the debris of war-ravaged Warsaw to serve as a forum for propaganda parades against the backdrop of the giant Palace of Science and Culture. However early on the square also became a site of protest, with 400,000 people in 1956 gathering there to demonstrate against Stalinism. Later the Palace, itself a (“contaminated”) gift from Stalinist Russia to the city, would see decidely non-communist events such as a Rolling Stones concert in 1967 and Leonard Cohen playing in 1985. Yet both building and square remain firmly associated with their USSR-financed history. And the past 25 years have seen post-communist Warsaw struggle with this legacy with numerous unrealised schemes to bring life and structure to the square and balance the dominance of its 230-metre-high neighbour.

[Vals, Switzerland] Morphosis unveils plans for "Minimalist" skyscraper next to Zumthor's Therme Vals

[Vals, Switzerland] Morphosis unveils plans for "Minimalist" skyscraper next to Zumthor's Therme Vals | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
The American architecture studio led by Pritzker Prize-winner Thom Mayne has unveiled its design for a 381-metre-tall mirrored hotel tower in Vals, Switzerland.

Morphosis Architects has released images of a slim, glassy skyscraper that it says will mirror the surrounding landscape of the Swiss Alps.

"As much as possible, the hotel is a minimalist act that re-iterates the site and offers to the viewer a mirrored, refracted perspective of the landscape," said Mayne.

Un métier, des professions : être architecte

Un métier, des professions : être architecte | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

NEVER BUILT New York: Projects From Gaudí, Gehry and Wright that Didn’t Make it in Manhattan | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Ever since its unprecedented skyward growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries,Manhattan has been an icon of construction all over the world, with recent estimates concluding that the island contains some 47,000 buildings. However, as with all construction, completed projects are just the tip of the architectural iceberg; Manhattan is also the home of many thousands of unloved, incomplete, and downright impossible proposals that never made it big in the Big Apple.

SIGN PETITION – SAVE Le Corbusier’s Capitol Complex in Chandigarh! | Chandigarh Urban Lab

SIGN PETITION – SAVE Le Corbusier’s Capitol Complex in Chandigarh! | Chandigarh Urban Lab | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Le Corbusier’s famous Capitol Complex in Chandigarh is about to be ruined by the construction of 27 towers (19 in first phase), each between 12 and 36 storeys tall, on land located just to its north. This project, called ‘TATA Camelot’, is being developed by TATA Housing, the real estate wing of TATA Sons, one of the largest industrial houses of India. This petition to stop TATA Camelot is directed at Ratan Tata, Chairman (Emeritus) of TATA Sons, who is an architect (Cornell ’62), and Pritzker Prize jurist.

1. The transparent relationship between the Capitol buildings and the agro-pastoral landscape and the Himalayas to its north, is an integral part of the design of the Capitol Complex. Le Corbusier documented this extensively, and carefully controlled all development in this area to ensure that it did not interfere with this relationship. He even moved the Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to prevent the building of a military cantonment within the sightlines of the Capitol. (See Documentation below.)

2. Due to political exigencies (i.e. the redrawing of state boundaries in 1966), a portion of the land just to the North of the Capitol is no longer under the jurisdiction of Chandigarh Administration, but under that of the state of Punjab. The TATA Camelot project exploits this loophole to cash in on the exorbitant real-estate values of Chandigarh by proposing the construction of this high-rise residential tower complex. More than a hundred members of the Punjab legislature are shareholders in the project, raising questions of due process.

Architects: Subarquitectura
Location: Galapagar, Madrid, Spain
Project Year: 2010

A unique opportunity for us is in reality a problema that’s been posed thousands of times: to construct a house with a public programme of social relation, associated with the prívate life of a numerous family on a sloping plot of land with privileged views of the mountains outside Madrid. It has no one solution, there are many, they’re even catalogued in books about houses of a slope.

We try not to think of domestic spaces. On the contrary, we take as a point of reference works of engineering, motorway intersections, changes of direction. We proceed from generic solutions to the problem of descending, solutions that conceal great plasticity. We seek the poetic in all that seems to have been considered from the merely pragmatic point of view.
