[Norway] Snøhetta's Powerhouse at Brattorkaia is the WORLD'S Northernmost Energy-Positive Office Building

[Norway] Snøhetta's Powerhouse at Brattorkaia is the WORLD'S Northernmost Energy-Positive Office Building | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Powerhouse at Brattorkaia will make use of solar cells, heat pumps, and sea water to become the world's most Northernmost energy-positive building. Located in downtown Trondheim, this office building was designed by Snøhetta, and received the environmental classification "Outstanding" from BREEAM NOR. It's yet another example of why Norway is such a sustainability role model and demonstrates that renewables make sense even in cold northern climes.

The DEPRECIATING Value of Form in the Age of Digital Fabrication

The DEPRECIATING Value of Form in the Age of Digital Fabrication | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

In this article, originally appearing on the Australian Design Review as “Tolerance and Customisation: a Question of Value“, Michael Parsons argues that the complex forms made possible by digital fabrication may soon be victims of their own popularity, losing their intrinsic value as they become more common and the skill required to make them decreases.

The idea of tolerance in architecture has become a popular point of discussion due to the recent mainstreaming of digital fabrication. The improvements in digital fabrication methods are allowing for two major advancements: firstly, the idea of reducing the tolerance required in construction to a minimum (and ultimately zero) and secondly, mass customisation as a physical reality. Digital fabrication has made the broad-brushstroke approach to fabrication tolerance obsolete and now allows for unique elements and tolerance specific to each element. The accuracy that digital fabrication affords the designer, allows for the creation of more complex forms with greater ease and control. So far, this has had great and far reaching implications for design.

The world's FIRST net-zero energy skyscraper rises in Indonesia

The world's FIRST net-zero energy skyscraper rises in Indonesia | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
The Pertamina Energy Tower's curved façade is precisely calibrated for Jakarta's proximity to the equator to mitigate solar heat gain year-round.

The world's first net-zero energy skyscraper soon will grace the center of Jakarta, Indonesia — the Pertamina Energy Tower. When it's finished in 2019, it will be 99 stories high and serve as the headquarters of the national energy company. In addition to the 20,000 people who will work there, it will be the centerpiece of a campus that has a mosque, a sports center and a 2,000-seat auditorium for the performing arts.

Shaped like a funnel, the top of the tower opens at the top, capturing wind and sucking it inside to run a series of vertical wind turbines that provide 25 percent of the building's electricity.

The building is designed to be a symbol of Indonesia's commitment to sustainable development. Find more details at the link.

The volume consists of two bodies joined by a bridge-library that spans a height difference of 85 cm, joining the public areas with the private spaces and generating a mezzanine 3.75 m high in the back space of the gallery. Since the site is elongated, the public spaces are laid out towards the main facade, articulating random terraces on the front volume, generating corners that reinforce the relationship with the landscape.

L'architecture s'ACHÈTERAIT-elle une conscience ? Penser global, construire social ! - Le Courrier de l'Architecte

L'architecture s'ACHÈTERAIT-elle une conscience ? Penser global, construire social ! - Le Courrier de l'Architecte | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

" Penser global, construire social !

Sophia Felbermair | orf.at

Yesterday BIG, along with 9 other teams including OMA and WXY, unveiled their proposalsfor “Rebuild by Design,” a competition which tasks teams with improving the resiliency of waterfront communities through locally-responsive, innovative design. Each proposal was required to be “flexible, easily phased, and able to integrate with existing projects in progress.” As Henk Ovink, the Principal of ”Rebuild by Design” as well as the Senior Advisor to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Shaun Donovan, stated: “Rebuild by Design is not about making a plan, but about changing a culture.” The winners will be announced later this spring.

Exhibition 3D paperArt: Packed pavilion - YouTube

Packed pavilion takes CAAD drawing to its limits at the exhibition 3D paperArt, part of the final leg of the Shanghai World Expo.

A number of students (Min Chieh Chen, Dominik Zausinger and Michele Leidi) from the Computer Aided Architectural Design Master's course at the ETH in Switzerland have devised a cardboard pavilion with the help of computer technology. The pavilion is situated outside the Shanghai Museum of Arts and Crafts as part of the exhibition 3D paperArt at the World Expo.

The structure features a number of variable truncated cones made from corrugated cardboard, which were glued together and fastened with tie wraps. The 409 cones that make up the pavilion each have a different size, fitting together like a puzzle to form a network of circles.

The overall goal of the pavilion is to demonstrate how architects can use CAAD to customize the design process. Here, each step was optimized by selfmade computers, from design to production, packing and shipping.

Exhibition at the Galerie d’Architecture, Paris (FR)

A monographic exhibition at the Galerie d’Architecture in Paris will present the work of Tham & Videgård. The exhibition, in itself conceived as a contextual project, continues the practice’s ongoing discussion on the fundamentals of architecture; a series of aspects and observations that T&V have labeled The Operative Elements of Architecture. With examples from built and ongoing projects, presented through a rich material of models, drawings and photographs, T&V elaborate on what constitutes architecture and how the T&Vteam’s interest in multiple contexts influences each specific project.

Prisons and Human Rights Violations: What Can Architects Do?

Prisons and Human Rights Violations: What Can Architects Do? | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Originally published by the Architectural Review as “Discipline and Punish: the Architecture of Human Rights“, this article by the founder of Architects Designers and Planners for Social Responsibility Raphael Sperry outlines how prison design in the US and elsewhere is violating fundamental human rights, and how some architects have come to be complicit in these designs.

We think of architectural regulations as being there to ensure that buildings are safe for the public. But what if a building’s harm is not caused by unexpected structural failure but by the building performing exactly as intended? Can a building designed to facilitate human rights violations amount to a violation in itself? And what is the responsibility of the architects involved? These are the questions at the centre of the current debate in America around the architectural profession’s involvement in prison design.

Arquitectos(as) y nuestro derecho al FRACASO | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

[Jeongok-ri, South Korea ]Jeongok Prehistory Museum - Hackenbroich Architekten | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

The Jeongok Prehistory Museum is located in the Hantan River Park. With the discovery of the Aecheulian Hand Axe, the neighbored excavation site is considered as one of the most important Palaeolithic sites in world archaeology. Besides the presentation of artefacts the museum should give an insight to the excavation work and be an entrance to the landscape of the river Hantan. The site is located on a slope and connects the park at the river with the excavation site. The idea is to extrapolate the existing landscape with a building that intensifies the landscape instead of reshaping it.

By the manipulation of the gentle slope a path through the museum is created. It connects all public areas such as ticket of fice, exhibition, museum shop, lecture hall, café and restaurant. The actual exhibition space is at the level of the entrance and continues into the hill to descend the visitors into the historic layers of the excavation hill. The exhibition space embedded in the ground, provides the spatial experience of the excavation pits. The most visible and iconographic element of the museum is the roof. Its volumetric structure of sections spans over all museum areas. The roof is shaped by the lateral forces which determine the dif ferent heights of the sections. The sections itself are interconnected with a system of steel beams and cables, so the roof structure appears massive and very light at the same time.
