Sustainable Architecture: The International Style of the 21st Century

Sustainable Architecture: The International Style of the 21st Century | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

For more than a century what we know of as Modern Architecture has spread and flourished in every corner of the globe. Though the term International Style was not popularized until the 1930s architects the world over had been discovering the ways in which modern technologies and materials made possible by the industrial age could be put to use in the art of building since well before the turn of the last century. Starting with such great architects as Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, Philip Johnson, Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the Modern movement in architecture was, and is still, an expression of man’s conquest over his environment; his ability to place the exact same building in any city on any continent anywhere in the world and have it function, look, and feel the exact same. It was the homogenization of architecture, and it was a great fault in human history.

Sustainable Architecture: The International Style of the 21st Century
Jemma Tanner's curator insight, October 28, 2013 11:32 PM

This article gave me an idea for a design task activity consisting of making your own sustainable building. If I were to ever create this activity I'd probably find an old building in the city that was going to be knocked down and create a story that the students had to design the replacement. I'd give criteria based around sustainable practices as well as what functions the building must have. The main focus I'd give them would be that the building needs to meet the needs of the residents without compromising future generations. From this resource I would take the three Ps mention - Purpose (does it fulfill the purpose for which it was designed), Physical (does it achieve the physical requirements given) and Pleasing (does it look good). If I really wanted to extend this task I could create a budget for the building in which the students would have to manage during its creation. I'd definitely do this as a group task because collaboration between students always generates more ideas.

[Geometric architecture] Alexander Hahn: 199 Visible Oranges

[Geometric architecture] Alexander Hahn: 199 Visible Oranges | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Let’s start with a piece of fiction. The setting is the crowded Mercat de la Boqueira in Barcelona, by reputation one of the best fresh food markets in Europe. Scores of fruit vendors display varieties of apples, pears, peaches, plums, apricots, cherries and oranges in but the few square meters of area that each has available. In competition with each other, they vie for the attention of housewives and tourists who press ahead from stall to stall. One of the merchants has arranged his Valencia oranges...

The story of the oranges provides a sense of what Mathematical Excursions to the World’s Great Buildings is all about. Of course, the setting of its narrative is not a fruit market and the subject is not a pyramid of oranges. Rather, it is a carefully selected flow of some of the great buildings of the world and the subject is the analysis of their most prominent features: their beams, arches, vaults and domes. By analogy with the example of the pyramid, the numerical, geometric and analytic information that the mathematics adds is essential to the understanding of the architecture of these structures. It provides insights that verbal descriptions or even sets of images cannot convey. The Mathematical Excursions discusses the pyramids of Egypt, the Parthenon in Athens, the Colosseum and Pantheon in Rome, the Hagia Sophia, historic mosques, great Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance cathedrals, some of Palladio’s villas, the US Capitol, and three icons of the 20th century: the Sydney Opera House, Gateway Arch in St. Louis and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.

A great LITERARY architecture project by Katherine Treppendahl based on J. Joyce's Ulysses

A great LITERARY architecture project by Katherine Treppendahl based on J. Joyce's Ulysses | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

This model represents my interpretation of the structural relationships within James Joyce’s Ulysses. While the novel occurs over the course of just one day, the text is lengthy, rich and exhaustive. The central story is that of salesman wandering Dublin. But revolving around and within that story are thousands of others– both internal stories developed within the novel and allusions to stories external to the text. The primary external text is, of course, Homer’s Odyssey, and the chapters  and characters in Joyce’s novel reflect scenes and characters from Homer’s story. I developed an architectural language for translating multiple aspects of the structure of the novel. This language takes into account the progression from realism to abstraction in the text, the shifting roles of and intersections between key characters, the passage of time, the interior stylistic parallels, and the reader’s journey through the text.

[Panama City, Panama ] Biomuseo | Gehry Partners | Building Types Study | Architectural Record | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
Panamania: A museum becomes an instant icon for a developing nation while upping the ante for design excellence
Years before Frank Gehry’s dazzling Biomuseo completed construction in Panama City, its memorable form—a collision of riotously colored folded metal canopies—became a hopeful emblem of the developing country’s arrival on the world stage. Ubiquitous in travel promotions and even emblazoned on the side of some of Copa Airlines’ fleet, the building was pegged to become a symbol of national pride. But as construction of the 44,000-square-foot project dragged on over a decade—while countless slapdash commercial towers sprouted up, changing the urban landscape with shocking speed—many locals have looked on with detached bemusement. “They call it the museum that never ends [que nunca termina],” a cabdriver said, laughing on a recent ride out to the building, located dramatically along the Amador Causeway at the Pacific entry to the Canal.

Rolling Masterplan: carrying mobile buildings that could be rolled back and forth depending on the season or situation

Rolling Masterplan: carrying mobile buildings that could be rolled back and forth depending on the season or situation | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

I wrote about Cedric Price’s Potteries Thinkbelt  not too long ago and this morning I saw this on iGNANT and had to post it right away. The Rolling Masterplan was proposed by swedish architecture firm Jagnefalt Milton  in 2010 as an entry  for a design competition  for the city of Åndalsnes in Norway. The plan was to use the old industry train tracks for a new kind of infrastructure carrying mobile buildings that could be rolled back and forth depending on the season or situation. The design integrated existing railway tracks with new extensions to moved  buildings throughout the city, providing an opportunity for reorganizing in various confirgurations to accommodate a combination of different scenarios.

As I have mentioned before in my post about Cedric Price’s Fun Palace that Price envisioned an architecture that incorporated mobility. Price saw Fun Palace as a structure that was flexible and could be reconfigured for any programming. Fun Palace offered a  complex interaction with real structures where participants would always encounter new experiences  through the patterning of spaces.

Barcelona Commemorates 300 Years of Catalan Spirit With 7 Public Installations

Barcelona Commemorates 300 Years of Catalan Spirit With 7 Public Installations | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Every year, citizens of Catalonia commemorate the events of September 11th 1714, a key date in the War of the Spanish Succession that has come to symbolize what Voltaire called “the Barcelonans’ extreme love of freedom.” With this year marking the 300th anniversary of these events, Barcelona Cultura enlisted the Fundació Enric Miralles to curate 7 public installations around the city as part of its Tricentenari BCN program.

The result is BCN RE.SET, organized by Benedetta Tagliabue of the Fundació Enric Miralles and stage director Àlex Ollé, which invited guest architects from countries all over the world to colloborate with local universities and create installations symbolizing 6 political and ideological concepts: identity, freedom, Europe, diversity, democracy and memory. These installations will be in place until September 11th. Read on after the break for descriptions of all 6 installations.

Architects Create a 3-D Printed Column That Survives Earthquakes | WIRED

Architects Create a 3-D Printed Column That Survives Earthquakes | WIRED | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

In the last half decade there’s been a Cambrian Explosion of 3-D printers, filling every axis of competition from price to size to print resolution. Most engineers and designers have been fixated on tuning up the machines, but a California-based architecture firm called Emerging Objects is focused on pushing the limits of 3-D printer materials. The result is a structural column designed to withstand earthquakes.

The aptly named Quake Column is a knurled pillar of 3-D printed concrete that combines an ancient Incan masonry technique with state-of-the-art manufacturing tools to create a structure that can withstand seismic shocks without mortar or rebar. In this system, bricks are designed in CAD tools to fit together like a 3-D puzzle and then printed in cement. Once assembled, interlocking features make the column resistant to earthquakes by preventing horizontal movement.

London's Newest Building Seems to Be Floating Away

London's Newest Building Seems to Be Floating Away | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
This architectural magic trick would make David Copperfield proud.

Imagine removing what you think is the losing block in a Jenga game, only to have the top of the tower remain hovering in the air. That's the illusion artistAlex Chinneck has accomplished with this London building, whose upper half seems to have broken from its mooring bricks to float away into the sky.

The gravity-defying structure, which went up last week in Covent Garden, is the latest architectural oddity from the 30-year-old Chinneck; he's also made anupside-down townhouse and a facade that's sliding onto the street. For the levitating building, titled "Take My Lightning But Don’t Steal My Thunder," the artist's team toiled to re-create the area's 184-year-old stone edifices with lightweight foam blocks. They then spent four days assembling the installation, at one point slipping in a hidden mechanism that achieves the semblance of weightlessness. (See if you can spot it in the below time-lapse video.)

How ‘Vandalizing’ a Classic Exposes the HYPOCRISY of Today’s Modernists

How ‘Vandalizing’ a Classic Exposes the HYPOCRISY of Today’s Modernists | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

These images from artist Xavier Delory show Le Corbusier’s celebrated Villa Sovoye in a shocking state of disrepair. With stones and spray paint, vandals have tragically defaced its pristine walls and windows. Don’t panic: the images shown here are photoshopped. But what if they weren’t? In this article originally published by Metropolis Magazine as “Modernism in Ruins: Artist “Vandalizes” a Le Corbusier Masterpiece,” AJ Artemel explores how our shock and dismay at such images exposes an underlying hypocrisy in our reverence for famous modernist works, and proposes that perhaps Modernism and vandalism are more closely related than we thought.

Living Small In The Big City: Adapting to a changing program, an inventive project in Seoul mixes micro and small apartments with arts-focused functions.

Although they used repetitive units and simple construction in their Songpa Micro Housing in Seoul, Jinhee Park and John Hong of Single Speed Design (SsD) brought variety and style to the 5,500-square-foot project by animating the spaces in between and around the tiny apartments. Wrapped within a striking container of stainless-steel louvers and enhanced with outdoor and shared spaces, the eight residences subvert the monotonous forms of most micro housing. By design—and ultimately by the client's changes to that design—the project shows that this building type can play a flexible role in a city's mix of housing.
