Caroline Ivy's curator insight, May 19, 2015 10:54 AM

This article is about the increasing urbanization of India, as well as India's potential to be an economic power house.

As as the most populous country in the world, India has been and is often scrutinized as it slowly crawls towards becoming a world power. Currently, India is in the process of restarting it's economic engine. In these efforts, the number of towns in India have increased and many have started to conglomerate into cities. Per the gravity model, larger places are attracting more people. Indian people are moving to cities for better education (the literacy rate is higher in cities) and better employment (jobs in transportation and services are rising as cities get larger). Even the sex ratio—the number of females per 1,000 males—is rising as people are exposed to services like family planning and new ideas are diffused. Urbanization is occurring in India as a result of increasing economic health and is now supporting its growth. Forces that drive urbanization are now helping to slowly improve the country.
