An iOS Game to Get Kids to Try Healthy Foods | URBAN TECH FAIR: Access . Education . Commerce | Scoop.it

"Chew or Die is a free iOS app that encourages people to try new healthy foods. The free app contains a series of healthy food challenges. The challenges include things like removing bread and potato-based starches with rice, trying a new vegetable, removing meat from your diet for a week, and sneaking more fiber into your diet. When you try a challenge take a picture of the food that you try and upload it to Chew or Die to challenge your friends to match your healthy choice"

Apparently bored with cars, bikes, and lawnmowers—along with the occasional private jet and humanoid robot—Honda’s engineers zippered on some Carhartts and built the company’s first house. Job, Career or Purpose - Don't just follow your Passion Focus instead on unique skills as a craftsman

Job, Career or Purpose - Don't just follow your Passion Focus instead on unique skills as a craftsman | URBAN TECH FAIR: Access . Education . Commerce | Scoop.it

"Do what you love" has become a career mantra, but is it a formula for real success?

...A chess player must devote roughly 10,000 hours to becoming a master. Once that level has been reached, however, the real pros continue not just to practice, but to do it smarter. They study seriously and engage in what Newport terms deliberate practice. In the case of the chess player, deliberate practice might mean studying difficult theoretical chess problems well out of the established comfort zone.

... Though following your passion is today’s ideal, it often won’t get you anywhere but frustrated. Focus instead on acquiring unique skills and refining the quality of what you do with the focus of a devoted craftsman. You’ll be well on your way to cultivating not only a satisfying career, but a new, rarer kind of practical passion built on commitment, mastery, and pride."

Cultivate the desire for mastery and strategy. Passion is a necessary ingredient, but it is just an ingredient in the recipe for success.

PTAHrchive #2: Is the Human Touch Gone Forever in the Jewelry Industry. | URBAN TECH FAIR: Access . Education . Commerce | Scoop.it
If you had to choose between art painted by hand or art made by computer software, which of the two would you say has greater value???Obviously most would say the item with the human touch because inherently we recognize the effort and talent it takes for people to create quality art.  However in the jewelry industry there has been a stampede toward computer aided designs or CAD to handle jewelry design. Many celebrities are spending top dollar for jewelry which has little or no human contact at all in designing it.
Jacqueline Taylor-Adams's insight:

This is a very interesting article that reflects the internal battle many of us may have with technology. While, we do know a human creates and manages technology, there is a loss of intimacy, uniqueness, and personality.

I guess the answer lies in moderation. Allow direct processes and touch to help fuel creativity in technology. Well, as you ponder this modern age dilemma, get an intriguing lesson in jewelry making!

Lesson from @ElonMusk: The Power of Innovating Together | URBAN TECH FAIR: Access . Education . Commerce | Scoop.it
We have a not-so-secret mancrush on Elon Musk, so we all swooned when he announced that Tesla Motors had open-sourced its electric vehicle technology patents.
Jacqueline Taylor-Adams's insight:

Wow, talk about on point. At the Urban Tech Fair, through the adversity of its Founder, Executive Producer Jim Neusom, we are emerging with a new level of commitment to produce, a new level of clarity, and are being gifted to collaborate with some of the greatest minds in tech who all have a loving commitment to raise the level of living in our communities.

This article reiterates four key points that have evolved and been discussed as the Urban Tech Fair collaborates to help develop what we collectively call The Ecosystem, an innovation and tech ecosystem within our community.

  1. we truly have exceptional talent and innovators that exist in our communities; recognized and unsung, developed and under developed
  2. collaboration is key to our collective success - we have to stop being scared and distrustful of one another - betterment over profit, the profitability will come
  3. build solid businesses - you don't bring a knife to a gun fight. we can't expect to attract funding, investment and produce long term success if our businesses are not solid and thought through. at the same time we have the opportunity to build solid, profitable businesses via collective mentoring, support, and development
  4. go big or go home - Jim's brain cancer survival reminds us that we have limited time, we have been brought into the company of one another on purpose for a purpose, and we must come together and produce

It's been two and half years of gathering in the company of some of the best hearts, minds and innovators of our community and within the last three weeks we have had shaping conversations with

  • Scale Up America's Co-Founder, Mike Green
  • Goddess of All Things Tech and Systematic, Technology Adoption Consultant and Advocate, Bonnie Sandy
  • Community and Small Business Strategist and Advocate, Lazone Grays, Jr.,
  • EduTech and Hines Media Group CEO, Jaymes Hines, and
  • Joseph Saulter, Musician, Actor, Video Game Designer, Co-founder of The Urban Video Game Academy, and CEO Entertainment Arts Research which is the first African American-owned 3D video-game development company in the United States.

Our hope is after reading this commentary and the article above, you will be reinvigorated, motivated, will have gained knowledge and strategy, and then ask how you may help develop and shape The Ecosystem.
