Youngstown Report: Promise of Urban Farming » Global Green Blog

Youngstown Report: Promise of Urban Farming » Global Green Blog | Urban Farm Initiatives | Scoop.it

Our report examines the financial feasibility of a commercial urban farm in the Oak Hill neighborhood of Youngstown. We looked at urban farms nationally and explored three urban farming scenarios for a roughly 5.5 acre farm focused primarily on vegetable production, aquaculture, and egg. When fully operational, the farm is projected to generate approximately $166,000 in revenue annually, produce more than $10,000 in profit, and create three full-time equivalent local jobs.

“This is the center of the farm,” he said, gazing over the corner of Warren and Grandy on Detroit’s near east side at a vacant lot waving with overgrown grass on a windy spring day. Not long ago, it was where Northeastern High School stood. Today, it’s ground zero in an agreement Wozniak hopes to make with Detroit Public Schools and the city to convert it to one of the city’s most ambitious urban agriculture projects — one that will eventually encompass everything from organic fruits and vegetables to an indoor tilapia farm in an abandoned municipal garage.

Cleveland adds another six-acre urban incubator farm | GreenCityBlueLake

Cleveland adds another six-acre urban incubator farm | GreenCityBlueLake | Urban Farm Initiatives | Scoop.it

On Friday, Ohio Department of Agriculture Director Robert Boggs will be in Cleveland to announce the funding of the Cleveland Urban Agriculture Incubator Pilot Project. The city will get $1.6 million ($940,000 from the state) in grants to develop a farmer program on six-acres of contiguous Land Bank (city owned vacant) property.

Located at Gill and E. 83rd Street, the funds will pay to prepare the land and provide infrastructure (such as water connections) for farming. A half-acre will be used by Ohio State University Extension as a demonstration area for educational purposes. The remaining will be leased in quarter-acre parcels to each of the 20 farmers enrolled in the incubator project.

$865,000 HUD Community Challenge grant awarded to team of planners | Knowlton School of Architecture

$865,000 HUD Community Challenge grant awarded to team of planners | Knowlton School of Architecture | Urban Farm Initiatives | Scoop.it

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded a very competitive Community Challenge grant to the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC) to plan a better food system for the Weinland Park neighborhood of Columbus. MORPC and its community partners are working to make the production, processing, distribution, preparation and celebration of food a central feature of the neighborhood. We are creating plans for a neighborhood food system in which the production of food takes place in yards and community gardens on nearly every block; in which training is available for those who want to learn how to produce, process, distribute, prepare and celebrate food, and to consume it in a healthy fashion; and in which the neighborhood is served by a year-round farmers market and a center for food-related training and the incubation of new food-related businesses.
