Abandoned Homes Punctuate Detroit's Cleared Neighbourhoods

Abandoned Homes Punctuate Detroit's Cleared Neighbourhoods | Modern Ruins | Scoop.it
Scott Carey has documented a selection of Detroit’s abandoned houses on largely depopulated streets. In some cases, the dilapidated structures are the last ones standing in their immediate neighbourhoods, as adjoining buildings have already met the wrecking ball.

Why we can't take our eyes off images of old buildings and decrepit interiors...

It's romantic, it's nostalgic, it's wistful, it's provocative. It's about time, nature, mortality, disinvestment.

Living in Sin City's Underground Tunnels | Environmental Graffiti | Modern Ruins | Scoop.it

The irony is hard to overlook. There are few, if any, cities on earth where the show of wealth and consumption is so shamelessly on display, and yet hidden beneath the surface of Las Vegas, another world exists. Written by Karl Fabricius. Photos by Austin Hargrave.

About Public Space and its Discontents

This group is interested in how people use, abuse and subvert 'public' spaces. Now that we lead sedentary indoor lives, public spaces are often neglected or strictly controlled and regulated.
We are interested in how public spaces can be used for 'unexpected' purposes other than their design or how that are 'supposed' to;

Graffiti, Signs, Stickers, Junk (creative use of 'rubbish'), Street Performances, Local Characters, Eccentric Heros, Weirdoes, Social Malcontents, Protests, Skateboarding, Squatting, Homemade Vehicles and Bicycles, Public Sculpture (and 'vandalism' thereof) , Street Parties, Social Interventions, Witty Adaptations, Interesting Architecture, Decoration and Adornment of Buildings, (more to be added soon)

Forgotten Places -Randall Whitehead

Forgotten Places -Randall Whitehead | Modern Ruins | Scoop.it

This collection of images is a result of my thinking about, and looking at, the kind of forgotten places we see for only a few seconds as we speed by them on our way to the rest of our busy lives. These forlorn and often grindingly ugly urban landscapes make me think of lost moments of childhood, failed hopes, and the brutal and relentlessly transitory nature of the American landscape in general. Maybe these places are warning signs of a world yet to come. In these photographs, time moves slowly, things are in a state of partially arrested decay, frozen in time.
