Still Seeing High Numbers for African American Male Student - Blogs

In the 2011-12 school year, African American students accounted for one-third of enrolled OUSD students and 63 percent of the students who were suspended. Of the male students, African Americans make up 16 percent of ...
Brandi Spencer's insight:

I believe that until teachers and administrators take the time to truly learn the students that they serve these issues will continue to exist.  Many of today's African American Males are dealing with adult issues at home and then asked to behave as children at school.   The experiences that a child has outside of school has a profound impact on the student that comes into your classroom each day.  As educators we must indiviudalize our approach for each student, just as we do for adults.

How Educators Can Help Close the Achievement Gap With Simple ... | Urban Education | Scoop.it
A new study from Stanford shows that a simple teaching tactic may help close the achievement gap between Latino American students and their white peers. Geoffrey Cohen, a professor of education and psychology at ...
Brandi Spencer's insight:

This article speaks specifically of Latino students, however, the strategies mentioned in this article can be effective for students that may identify with a minority subgroup such as girls, special education students, African American students, overweight students, etc.

Cohen says, “Self-affirmation exercises provide adolescents from minority groups with a psychological time out. In an environment many minorities find hostile, such tasks provide reassurance about who they are and what’s really important at a critical time in their lives." - This is a powerful statement.  These exercises give the students time to center themselves and realize what is really important.

Working with middle school students was a wonderful experience for me.  I was amazed by the issues and situations that many of my students were dealing with at such a young age.  We all know how difficult it is as adults to focus when we are stressed out about personal issues.  Imagine a eleven year old attempting to learn fractions under the same conditions!

What can we take away from this article?  One thing that I can take away is that teachers must make time to build up the entire child.  In order to have students that are ready to learn, we must sometimes attend to their emotional needs first.
