The county's Metropolitan Transportation Authority unveiled this month a record $4.15-billion budget that includes money for about a dozen rail lines that are either under construction or being planned.

The German city of Cologne (Köln) is one of Germany’s largest cities with a total population of approximately 1 million people. It its over 2000 years lasting history, its urban landscape changed considerably, and since the Prussian times in the 19th century fairly good mapping records cover the modern land use change from the pre-industrialised to the post-modern city. In a GIS mapping project some years ago, these changes have been digitized in full detail from some major topographic maps, covering the changes in the urban land use since 1850 (see bottom image of this page for the legend to this animation):...

"The National Urban Policy was issued yesterday by federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese and details a range of initiatives designed to promote long-term urban growth..."

Regardless the details of this policy: it is remarkable that this national governement has a specific policy developed for cities. This is remarkable, because many other governements (i.e. the US of the Dutch) focus in their national policies on the rural area's. This Australian NUP is a recognition of the importance of cities and their health for the modern economy and society.

Can urban intervention create opportunities for fitness in public spaces? Can well-placed "extensions" to existing urban structures, such as scaffolding or bike racks, turn a city into a free gym? Par Corps Lab — led by curator Shonquis Moreno, Robynne Kassen and Sarah Gluck (Urban Movement), and Tucker Viemeister (Rockwell Lab) — investigates these possibilities through a series of physical experiments in the city of New York.
ExpoTENtial's Par Corps Lab opens on Monday, May 16th, at the Center for Architecture. It is on view until May 31st. The Sixth Annual Fit City Conference opens the following day, May 17th, also at the Center for Architecture.

By international standards South African cities are inefficient, Parliament's financial and fiscal commission acting chairman Bongani Khumalo said.
This was due to low-density development, high travel costs, long distances to and from places of work and high carbon footprints, he told reporters in Parliament on the commission's submission for the Division of Revenue for 2012.
