Why I Want to Learn About Biodiversity and Conservation

Why I Want to Learn About Biodiversity and Conservation | Urban Biodiverse | Scoop.it

Javier Bol submitted a nice Eco Kid essay.

"While I was reading a book on ecosystem I became interested in the biodiversity, natural resource, conservation and the three ‘r’ reduce, reuse and recycle.  I am very concerned about our ecosystem because we need to find a way of living, one that creates less pollution of the earth’s atmosphere and can lower the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere of the earth called global warming."

Anna Phillips's curator insight, July 13, 2013 8:07 AM

It's wonderful to see people of all ages sharing an interest in conservation of biodiversity. I hope he keeps up his goal and becomes involved in conservation in the future.

My dad once asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. "Naturschützerin!" (conservationist) was my reply. I was ten years old.

Time has passed. I am now 22 and I am well on my way to become a conservation biologist! Thanks dad and David Attenborough for instilling a love for the natural world in me. A light that will never be dimmed.

Where have all the codfish gone? | e! Science News

Where have all the codfish gone? | e! Science News | Urban Biodiverse | Scoop.it
The mega-decline in cod and other fisheries across the North Atlantic Ocean threatens the livelihood of fishermen and communities in New England and Atlantic Canada. One suspect in the disappearance of cod and other groundfish is the food source for their young: a planktonic copepod crustacean, no larger than a grain of rice. Recent changes in local copepod populations have co-occurred with declines in fisheries elsewhere, such as the collapse of the cod fishery in Europe's North Sea.

Molecular basis of nitrate uptake by the plant nitrate transporter NRT1.1

Molecular basis of nitrate uptake by the plant nitrate transporter NRT1.1 | Urban Biodiverse | Scoop.it

The NRT1/PTR family of proton-coupled transporters are responsible for nitrogen assimilation in eukaryotes and bacteria through the uptake of peptides. However, in most plant species members of this family have evolved to transport nitrate as well as additional secondary metabolites and hormones. In response to falling nitrate levels, NRT1.1 is phosphorylated on an intracellular threonine that switches the transporter from a low-affinity to high-affinity state. Here we present both the apo and nitrate-bound crystal structures of Arabidopsis thaliana NRT1.1, which together with in vitro binding and transport data identify a key role for His 356 in nitrate binding. Our data support a model whereby phosphorylation increases structural flexibility and in turn the rate of transport. Comparison with peptide transporters further reveals how the NRT1/PTR family has evolved to recognize diverse nitrogenous ligands, while maintaining elements of a conserved coupling mechanism within this superfamily of nutrient transporters.
