A single city in China built MORE skyscrapers last year than the US and Australia combined | Urban and Master Planning | Scoop.it
China’s skyscraper craze reached another new high last year.
In 2016 the world saw the completion of 128 skyscrapers, up from 114 in 2015, according to the US-based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (it defines a skyscraper as being higher than 200 m, or 656 ft). Of those, 84 came from China, a new record for the nation. China has topped the council’s completions list every year for nearly a decade (pdf, p. 2). In 2015 it notched 68 such buildings, also a record in China at the time.

| Urban and Master Planning | Scoop.it

L’île de la Cité MÉTAMORPHOSÉE  - leJDD.fr | Urban and Master Planning | Scoop.it

Another nice application of D&S theory - the market for luxury properties has been adversely affected by Brexit, according to the Guardian. This, it is argued, it likely to affect the market lower down and also adversely affect government Stamp Duty revenues.

The BEST Architecture Drawings of 2016

The BEST Architecture Drawings of 2016 | Urban and Master Planning | Scoop.it
Designing and building a project is a challenge in itself. However, once the project is complete there are also challenges in expressing the project so that it can be understood by a new audience. This is especially true in digital media, where online readers don't necessarily spend the same time reading an article as in print media. This way, drawings and all visual representation and it's new forms -such as the animated Gifs- play an important role in the project's understanding

At ArchDaily we push ourselves as editors, as well as the architects in our network, to get the best out of the projects we receive and share with the world so that we can deliver knowledge and inspiration to millions of people. The drawings we chose are not only visually entertaining but they serve as a way of educating and learning on particular issues where architectural representation is fundamental.

Regardless if they are digital or hand-drawn, all the architectural drawings we have selected this year have a sensitive expression, whether it be artistic, technical or conceptual, they all aim to express and explain the project using simplicity, detail, textures, 3D and color as main tools.

This year we want to highlight a selection of 90 drawings arranged under eight categories: Architectural Drawings, Axonometrics, Context, Diagrams, Sketches, Animated Gifs, Details and Other Techniques

Snowfall was recorded in the Sahara Desert for the first time in 37 years — and the satellite imagery is gorgeous | Urban and Master Planning | Scoop.it

It snowed on December 19 in the Sahara Desert, and NASA's Landsat 7 satellite was there (or rather, hundreds of miles overhead) to see it.

The photo comes from Landsat 7's Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus visible-light camera, and depicts the first snowfall recorded in the massive African desert in 37 years.

The snow-covered area depicted in the photo lies on the northern end of the desert, near the Moroccan-Algerian border and the town of Ain Safra. Here's the full image, which you can click to enlarge:...

Build Your OWN Subway System with This New Game

Build Your OWN Subway System with This New Game | Urban and Master Planning | Scoop.it
In New York City, as in many cities worldwide, residents rely on the subway system to get around. But despite its importance, there are still plenty of locations throughout the city so difficult to get to, it’ll leave you cursing, “Who designed this thing anyway!?”

Now thanks to a new game from engineer Jason Wright, you have a chance to correct the design flaws of the current system – virtually, anyway.

The game, titled “Brand New Subway,” starts with either a blank slate, or with preloaded versions of the present map, the planned 2025 system, or the system depicted in the famous 1972 Massimo Vignelli-designed map. You’re then able to add new stations off of existing MTA lines, or to create a completely new line of your own.

The game will grade you based on your system as you go (the present-day map receives a “B”), based on overall accessibility.

You can also input any other city and create your own system from scratch there, using the traditional New York City designations.
