WikiCity: How Tactical Urbanism is Improving Mexico City for Pedestrians and Cyclists

WikiCity: How Tactical Urbanism is Improving Mexico City for Pedestrians and Cyclists | URBANmedias | Scoop.it

Across the globe, citizens are taking control of their cities by implementing the changes governments aren't providing. We recently met with Alejandro Morales and Jimena Veloz to discuss their work...

Morales: With the sidewalk – the very first project – local people were unsure because they didn’t know who did it. But now the collective is growing and, I hate to use the word powerful, but now we’re getting quite noisy and people are beginning to realise that we are quite a large group of people who can make real change.

Cartographic ANOMALIES: How Map Projections Have Shaped Our Perceptions of the World

Cartographic ANOMALIES: How Map Projections Have Shaped Our Perceptions of the World | URBANmedias | Scoop.it

Elizabeth Borneman explores how cartography and cartographic projections help and hinder our perception of the world.

"How do you think the world (starting with our perceptions) could change if the map looked differently? What if Australia was on top and the hemispheres switched? By changing how we look at a map we truly can begin to explore and change our assumptions about the world we live in."

Geography doesn’t just teach us about the Earth; it provides ways for thinking about the Earth that shapes how we see the world.  Maps do the same; they represent a version of reality and that influences how we think about places.

[Columbia GSAPP] ECHOING BORDERS: THE SHELTER, THE CAMP, THE CITY, AND THE STATE, the Spatialization of Forced Migration in JO + TR

[Columbia GSAPP] ECHOING BORDERS: THE SHELTER, THE CAMP, THE CITY, AND THE STATE, the Spatialization of Forced Migration in JO + TR | URBANmedias | Scoop.it

The workshop ECHOING BORDERS: THE SHELTER, THE CAMP, THE CITY, AND THE STATE addresses the necessity for understanding and analyzing the evolution of 'temporary settlements' in relation to the place of the refugee in contemporary migration politics in the region.

Since the outbreak of civil war in Syria in March 2011, an estimated 9 million Syrians have fled their homes taking refuge in neighboring countries or within Syria itself, leaving more than 40% of the Syrian population uprooted. So far 600,000 Syrian refugees fled to Jordan and 800,000 to Turkey. Since 2011 Turkey established 22 camps for 200,000 Syrian refugees, Jordan just opened its third camp for Syrian refugees, Azraq camp, with a capacity of 130,000 people.

While other important academic endeavors attend to the urgent need for improved planning methodologies and design approaches of temporary settlements in response to war and conflict, in this workshop we will focus on the architectural typologies of temporary refuge (both in the camp and in the city), as reflections of the shifting notion of citizenship.

Participants will work with architects, geographers, anthropologists, lawyers, journalists and graphic designers on mappings and data visualization exercises of migration patterns in the region, and of the trajectories from the border to the camp or to the city, operating according to a joint timeline for both Jordan and Turkey based on the main events of war and conflict causing forced migration to both countries.

Re-IMAGINING Cities: Transforming the 21st Century Metropolis - Studio Daniel Libeskind

Re-IMAGINING Cities: Transforming the 21st Century Metropolis - Studio Daniel Libeskind | URBANmedias | Scoop.it

Daniel Libeskind will once again participate in the New Cities Summit, the leading global event on the future of the urban world. The Summit is a platform for action-oriented discussion and knowledge sharing among leaders, thinkers and builders of global cities. The theme of this year’s event is Re-imagining Cities: Transforming the 21st Century Metropolis.

The talk will take place in the acclaimed Winspear Opera House, designed by Foster & Partners, in the heart of the Dallas Arts District – America’s largest contiguous arts district, on June 18th at 4:00pm.

This year’s Summit will also underscore the vital role that arts and culture play in the re-imagination of cities. To this end, the Foundation’s recently launched Global Cultural Districts Network, (GCDN), will be curating several important sessions. The Network is a federation of global centers of arts and culture fostering co-operation and knowledge-sharing among those responsible for conceiving, funding, building, and operating cultural districts.

After unprecedented success at last year’s Summit in São Paulo, Brazil, the New Cities Foundation will once again present WhatWorks – a dynamic talk series by grassroots urban innovators from around the world and from across sectors – including urban farming, crime control, waste management, sustainable energy and urban design.

Ce texte législatif important comprend donc des mesures, pour éviter la rétention foncière et optimiser l’utilisation du foncier dans le tissu urbain existant. C’est en ce sens que la loi fait évoluer les dispositions existantes dans les documents de planification....

HOW Vancouver Became One of North America's Most Family-Friendly Cities

HOW Vancouver Became One of North America's Most Family-Friendly Cities | URBANmedias | Scoop.it
It took very concerted policy efforts going back to the early 1990s.

Downtown Vancouver, in particular, has made a concerted effort to improve living conditions for families, starting back in the early 1990s. Evidently, the policies have paid off. In 2011, downtown Vancouver was home to 5,100 kids under 15—five times more than downtown Seattle, which itself is doing better in this regard than most American cities. This part of Vancouver is also outpacing the city at large, as well as outlying parts of the metro area.

[Bertrand Delanoë’s most lasting legacy / Anne Hidalgo] Project for Public Spaces | Placemaking in Paris: How Politics Changed the Parisian Landscape

[Bertrand Delanoë’s most lasting legacy / Anne Hidalgo] Project for Public Spaces | Placemaking in Paris: How Politics Changed the Parisian Landscape | URBANmedias | Scoop.it

PPS has been learning from and advocating for better public spaces in Paris, a city that has quietly done more than any other in recent decades to increase livability. Around the time that Delanoë came into office we commented on the public realm in Paris and how the public spaces in the city were outpacing other major cities reviewed at the same time. This piece was written before the elections, which resulted in Anne Hidalgo’s election as Mayor.

As Paris enters the final days of a hard-fought Mayoral race, one thing is clear. The terms of political debate permanently shifted during the administration of outgoing Mayor Bertrand Delanoë, and a remarkable consensus has emerged over environmental concerns. When Delanoë took office 13 years ago, he vowed that automobile interests would no longer dominate the city and he would focus on improving public spaces. And he made good on his promise.

Paris is now a radically different place. Less than half of Parisian households own a car and those who do use them far less than the inhabitants of other cities. People have become attached to the quality of life that urban spaces designed as places, and not as conduits for traffic, allow. To be perceived as intending to take that away would be electoral folly for an aspiring Mayor.
