‘A Conversation About Growing Up Black’ - NYTimes.com

‘A Conversation About Growing Up Black’ - NYTimes.com | Upstanding resources | Scoop.it
Lisa Catania, LCSW's insight:

So important to realize how deeply ingrained racism is in our society/communities - we can start by understanding what it is like to be profiled and discriminated against, and to be vigilant to not judge and perpetuate racist behaviors/attitudes/beliefs.

From this piece:  "Imagine strangers crossing the street to avoid you, imagine the police arbitrarily stopping you, imagine knowing people fear you because of the color of your skin. Many of this country’s young black men and boys don’t have to imagine..."

We must be the change we want to see!

How We Can Help Young Girls Stay Assertive | Upstanding resources | Scoop.it
When she's four, she's audacious. When she's 14, she has trouble speaking up for herself. Here's how to help young women keep their voice.
Lisa Catania, LCSW's insight:

Adolescents often "lose their voice" as they give in to the conformity of wanting to belong.  They often "dumb it down" and betray their own values and authentic sense of worth.  Here are some suggestions to help girls (and boys too) to not give way to the pressures of conformity and silencing themselves.

Today, President Barack Obama will present actress Sally Field with the National Medal of Arts at the White House.
Lisa Catania, LCSW's insight:

Phenomenal link to a video of Sally Field's acceptance speech of the HRC's Ally for Equality Award.  She is a role model to me, as a mom, who seeks to encourage my children in their quests for authenticity wherever it may lead them.  Not only will I want to follow, but I'll want to clear the way!  (and that's where I continue to learn I must restrain myself - within reason - and let them have their own journey).

Peace and love,  Lisa

Lisa Catania, LCSW's insight:

I love this!  Wouldn't it be great to give a group of students each $10 and give them the assignment to offer to pay an homeless person for a 10 minute interview?  We all benefit when we stop and look at another person as a human being with a story just like us.  I believe compassion is the seed that grows the opposite of judgment, racism, elitism, homophobia, fear... Let's grow more compassion, kindness and love!
