Pence Gives Odd Answer To Young Girl Upset By Trump's Remarks About Women

Pence Gives Odd Answer To Young Girl Upset By Trump's Remarks About Women | Upsetment | Scoop.it
It seems like a safe bet to assume that 11-year-olds’ primary concern is not “law and order” or that they might not know what it means to describe Hillary Clinton’s foreign policy as “feckless.”
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Seriously, is this the best that Mr. Pence can offer to a young girl? Is this the answer that he would offer his own child? Sure they want to pivot away from there negatives, but sometimes you have to deal with things. Sometimes you have to own up. If you were Mike Pence, what answer would you have given? Seriously, let's offer some actual statements that he and Trump could give to this youngster and other young women (heck and to older women as well.)

Jewish woman detained for taking Torah scroll to Western Wall in Jerusalem - The Boston Globe

Jewish woman detained for taking Torah scroll to Western Wall in Jerusalem - The Boston Globe | Upsetment | Scoop.it
JERUSALEM — Israeli police briefly detained a leader of a Jewish women’s rights group on Tuesday for bringing a Torah scroll to the Western Wall, signaling a resumption of the battle over rituals at the holy site here.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
I want to remind people that ridiculous sexist attitudes are part of traditional Islam but also of Judaism. Of course, in Catholicism and the Orthodox there are also restrictions on who can play what sacramental roles. At lease, in the US, we may actually have a woman president in the near future. There are many issues in the world that really matter. For me the question of who brings a parchment scroll to an archeological site really isn't one of them. However, the role of ultra-orthodox Jews in the policies of Israel is. Many of these same rabbis stand in the way of peace in the region, a peace that would recognize a Palestinian state and seek reasonable accommodation, especially in Jerusalem.

Why More Teen Girls Are Getting Genital Plastic Surgery

Why More Teen Girls Are Getting Genital Plastic Surgery | Upsetment | Scoop.it
We have ignored porn’s impact on girls’ sexual confidence—and its likely role as a culprit in the alarming increase in surgeries
Kenneth Weene's insight:
This is incredibly sad. Young women should know that they are beautiful and more importantly that they have great value beyond the image of their bodies. We need to encourage the young—male and female—to look at their bodies with knowledge and love and to reject the cartoon thinking of porn, hero movies, and video-games.

Huckabee: Crush Abortion With Military

Huckabee: Crush Abortion With Military | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The former Arkansas governor is open to sending the National Guard to stop women from getting abortions. No, really—that’s his plan.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is truly offensive. Please, would some woman, even one who opposes abortion with her entire soul, explain to me how she could vote for a man who wanted to use this kind of repressive measure on other women.

It's a pop song like no other. But not every woman is allowed to hear it. | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Some women risk their lives for the simple right to listen to a song like this one.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

A powerful message and a well delivered song.  Take a few minutes to appreciate the courage it takes for women in many parts of the world to express themselves and to call for equality.

He Beat Her And Murdered Her Son — And She Got 45 Years In Jail

He Beat Her And Murdered Her Son — And She Got 45 Years In Jail | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Arlena Lindley’s boyfriend Alonzo Turner beat her for months and murdered her child — so why was she sent to prison for 45 years? A BuzzFeed News investigation.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Did they have a responsibility to their children? Of course they did, BUT:  The law needs to be changed to recognize the helplessness of battered women, but society also has to make the necessary counseling and information available to these women to help them help themselves and their children.

Ted Cruz has no idea how birth control works

Ted Cruz has no idea how birth control works | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Cruz should probably review his facts on contraception since he hates it so much VIDEO
Kenneth Weene's insight:

How can it be wrong if Ted Cruz says it? Besides being a chronic liar, he doesn't know what he's talking about. Is this the face of the GOP? If it is, then I suggest that the Republican Party is mooning us all.

Pakistani mother arrested for burning daughter alive for ‘honour killing’

Pakistani mother arrested for burning daughter alive for ‘honour killing’ | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A Pakistani woman was arrested on Wednesday after dousing her daughter with kerosene and burning her alive, allegedly because the girl had defied her family to marry a man she was in love with, polic
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Women do not belong to their families; they are not chattel; they should never be seen as disposable property. But then, I am the product of the modern world and not a believer in the barbarism that too often passes itself as religion.

Meet Sultana, the Taliban’s Worst Fear

Meet Sultana, the Taliban’s Worst Fear | Upsetment | Scoop.it
An Afghan girl’s hunger for knowledge is stronger than the threat of an acid attack.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
What happened to the theocratic views of the New England Puritans? They founded schools and their children began to think. Theocracy fell before the onslaught of rationality and humanism. That is the only way theocratic thinking is ever defeated, by educating the young. Are there risks to letting young people from Islamic countries into ours? Yes; there may well be some terrorists and some may be alienated by the enormity of the change from home to America. BUT, if we do not offer young people the future that can be theirs, we will leave power in the hands of traditions and would be holy men.

Even more upsetting is the propensity of the American government to welcome with open arms the militaristic scions of dictators. Happily we train them to use weapons. How much better to equip minds with the tools to make the world a better one.

FDA Revisits Safety Of The Essure Contraceptive Device

FDA Revisits Safety Of The Essure Contraceptive Device | Upsetment | Scoop.it
It's the only available, nonsurgical permanent birth control option that's FDA-approved. But thousands of women have complained of serious side effects like severe pain, heavy bleeding and depression.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

If I am reading this properly, some women have serious side-effects and there's about a 10% failure rate, yeah there should be a review. On the other hand, many women (and men) want an easy, permanent form of contraception. Perhaps that isn't as scientifically challenging as some other goals for medical research, it is one we should support, especially those who want to see fewer (and someday perhaps no) abortions. Indeed, wouldn't it be wonderful if we had non-surgical, permanent  way to stop pregnancies except when we wanted them, a removable insert. The women of the world deserve control over conception.

Jeb: ‘Women’s Health’ Is Overfunded

Jeb: ‘Women’s Health’ Is Overfunded | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Says he “misspoke.”
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Sure people can make mistakes; I make them, too. But when we're talking about a key issue, something that is in the news every day for weeks and a dumb-dumb says something like this, please explain to me how any woman, any woman at all, can consider voting for him. As a man who cares, I couldn't vote for this turkey after this comment. Sadly, his attitude reflects the entire right wing of the GOP in their disregard for the people of our country, especially women. Can't the Republican Party do better? If not, perhaps it's time for a new political party, one that cares about the real America not just the corporations.

MLK's Mother Was Assassinated, Too: The Forgotten Women Of Black History Month

MLK's Mother Was Assassinated, Too: The Forgotten Women Of Black History Month | Upsetment | Scoop.it
On June 23rd, 1973, Alberta Williams King was gunned down while she played the organ for the “Lord’s Prayer” at Ebenezer Baptist Church. As a Christian civil rights activist, she was assassinated...just like her son, Martin Luther King, Jr. But most people remember only one. Until a month ago, I was one of those people.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I never knew that she, too, was martyred to the cause of equality. I would suggest that much of the preoccupation behind the Second Amendment when it was enacted was fear of Black slaves rebelling and of Native Americans defending their lands. Today, it seems like that same goal of oppressing others continues, but the gun culture would tell us that it is they who are oppressed.

Syria's female refugees facing poverty, harassment and isolation

UN report reveals toll of war on women as the sole providers for a quarter of the families who have fled the fighting
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Wherever there is internal unrest it is the women and children who suffer most. Whether it is these hapless victims of the civil war in Syria or the children being sent by their families to escape the upheaval in Guatemala, the story of suffering and misery is in their eyes and will unquestionably come back to haunt another generation and another. Humans, we are often a disgusting species, given to killing one another for what -- so our leader can be more important than the other group's leader? Shame on us.

Charts: This Is What Happens When You Defund Planned Parenthood

Charts: This Is What Happens When You Defund Planned Parenthood | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A look at Texas, where dozens of clinics have shut down, leaving nearly 200,000 women in search of affordable health care.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Now the serious questions: How many of the women whose health services have been impacted are registered to vote? How many members of their families are registered to vote? How many of them will vote in every election? How many of them will never again vote for a Republican?

Until the women of America realize that the Republican party is their enemy, there will be no change. Sorry, Ladies, but that's the reality; so change it.

Leeches, Lye and Spanish Fly

Leeches, Lye and Spanish Fly | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Desperate to end pregnancies, women have endured agony.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I cannot imagine that any woman is pro-abortion, that wants to get pregnant in order to have an abortion. No, it is rather that women who have become pregnant are desperate to terminate what they believe will destroy that for which they live. This piece discusses what the cost of that desperation has looked like historically. If you care about women, you will read this and care about protecting the right to choose even if you wish that no woman would ever need to choose an abortion.
