Escape from New Orleans: As waters rose, a white suburb across the Mississippi closed a key bridge to fleeing residents

Escape from New Orleans: As waters rose, a white suburb across the Mississippi closed a key bridge to fleeing residents | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The harrowing story of 300 people, city employees and their families, who battled floodwaters — and the local officials who stood between them and dry ground.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Of course it is really the story of American racism close up and ugly, of a White community trying to stop Blacks fleeing the Katrina flooding of New Orleans from crossing to safety. Bull Conner may be behind us, but when you read this excerpt you may hear his nasty voice and smell his dogs' breath.

Analysis Finds Higher Expulsion Rates for Black Students

Analysis Finds Higher Expulsion Rates for Black Students | Upsetment | Scoop.it
While black students represented just under a quarter of public school students in the 13 Southern states studied, they made up nearly half of all suspensions and expulsions.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

In case you were wondering about whether this might not be racism but realism, consider this:  in a study of students in Texas ,  in situations where laws require schools to suspend or expel a student — such as when the student brings a gun or drugs to campus — whites are more likely to be suspended or expelled than blacks. It would be interesting to see similar studies of the treatment of Hispanic students in the southwest and Texas, and of course of Native American kids in  the Dakotas, Montana, and of course the southwest. As a society we must stop condoning institutional racism.

White America’s Waco insanity: The shocking realities it ignores about racism & violence

White America’s Waco insanity: The shocking realities it ignores about racism & violence | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The response to the Twin Peaks shootout says everything you need to know about how white privilege really works
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While the police in Texas did a wonderful job of handling this explosive situation, the point Brittney Cooper makes about the way this extensive and explosive White criminal behavior was dealt with in comparison to the way police routinely respond to even a whiff of Black violence is damning of American law enforcement and reveals the extent of our racism as a country.

Dante and David apply for the same job but only one gets an interview. Here's the rest of their day. | Upsetment | Scoop.it
If you've ever wanted a side-by-side illustration of how racism seeps into everyday situations like job hunting, driving, and even going to the doctor, this video from Brave New Films breaks it down flawlessly.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is the institutionalized racism that haunts America. For those who do not understand the concept of social justice, I suggest you imagine yourself being a black person and a white person in each of these situations. Can you allow yourself to feel the rising gorge in your throat as time after time you are treated differently in one skin as opposed to the other?

Martese Johnson’s lawyer described his client as a well-respected leader at the University of Virginia.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Meanwhile on Fox News an all white panel condemned teaching about police violence as part of Black History Month in a Virginia school district. Perhaps it's time for the fools on Faux to shut up and stop spewing their hate, which feeds racism and police violence.

America's Forgotten Mass Lynching: When 237 People Were Murdered In Arkansas

America's Forgotten Mass Lynching: When 237 People Were Murdered In Arkansas | Upsetment | Scoop.it
In 1919, in the wake of World War I, African American sharecroppers unionized in Arkansas, unleashing a wave of white vigilantism and mass murder that left 237 people dead.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Every time I read about a police officer shooting a Black person my immediate thought is to all the dead who have gone before. Perhaps in that situation the officer was in real danger or truly protecting others, but it will take a great deal of White blood before the scales are even. I think of Lincoln's words in his second inaugural, "until every drop of blood drawn with the lash, shall be paid by another drawn by the sword." Shame on us as a nation if we refuse to recognize the sins of our history. Even greater shame if we do not recognize that we continue those sins in our attitudes of today.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Dare we call this racist? Dare we say it is symptomatic of what I and others have been saying about far too many of this nation's police? Might I suggest that every Black family in America contact Disney and tell them that they will not be visiting Disney World until the Orlando police department is totally restructured? Want to be that that will make a faster and bigger difference than all the protests in the word?

In September, police took a 17-year-old African-American boy out of high school in Cincinnati, Ohio, and arrested him on the suspicion that he had participated in an armed mugging. There was no evidence connecting him to the alleged crime, his public...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Yet another example of institutional racism in America. Would a white boy have been arrested on such a flimsy case? When do we as a country grow beyond this kind of crap? This was a kid with no history of being in trouble whose family attested he was at home in bed; the cop should never have arrested him. The police no longer understand probable cause, and the courts no longer are setting limits.

Deep South justice in Ferguson | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Why Michael Brown’s death strikes a raw nerve.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I know there are many who will say, "Well, that's not today." But it really is. If you look at the numbers of young black men in jail and the numbers shot by police. If you look at the distribution of power in communities like Ferguson with its huge black majority and white political structure. If you look at the disproportionate part of the town's income that comes from fines against the poor blacks. Yeah, the world has changed a lot less than we want to think,

Kenneth Weene's insight:

There are no words to properly describe the idiocy of this judge. Road Rage? The vehicle was parked, illegally but parked, or more technically standing. Why would that induce road rage? This was assault, pure and simple, and the language is de facto proof of its racial basis. And this in New York? Disgusting.

Ferguson Feeds Off the Poor: Three Warrants a Year Per Household | Upsetment | Scoop.it
In the chamber where Officer Wilson received a commendation six months before killing Michael Brown, a minor court generates major money from the city’s poor and working people.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

If you read this article, what becomes apparent is that there is institutionalized racism in Ferguson even though the city is predominantly Black. The bottom line: If Black Americans don't vote, they will never get the boot off their necks. That is why voter registration is so vital and so opposed by the conservatives.

This Black Driver’s Mistake Was Looking a Police Officer in the Eye

This Black Driver’s Mistake Was Looking a Police Officer in the Eye | Upsetment | Scoop.it
John Felton was driving to his brother’s house in Dayton, Ohio, on a recent night when he noticed a police car tailing him. Not wanting to give the officer any excuse to pull him over, Felton, who is black and was visiting Dayton from Michigan, tried to drive extra carefully....
Kenneth Weene's insight:

So to make eye contact while Black is different from making eye contact when White? There is something seriously wrong with that. It is pure and simple discrimination. That the police department is trying to make it a personal issue rather than a disciplinary one demonstrates that once again institutional racism is a problem in America. Should the cop be disciplined? I don't know, but certainly made an example. How about a simple statement saying something like,  This officer was wrong in his actions and we cannot condone such racist law enforcement. Future incidents will meet with disciplinary action." ?

“Just comply”: Fox News hosts recommend black men stop “resisting arrest” if they don’t want to die | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Cops wouldn't make "bad decisions" if "the perp didn't run away" VIDEO
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Perhaps if Black men (and women) could assume that they would receive courteous and lawful treatment at the hands of police, this advice would make better sense. But when a Black woman doesn't put out her cigarette, which she is smoking in her car, and ends up incarcerated and dead, well, that raises a question. Sure, fleeing over a traffic stop is dumb and should result in serious punishment, but firing that gun was totally wrong and every thinking person knows that were Mr. Dubose a white man the shot would not have been fired. Of course, the real problem is that Fox commentators are not what one might call thinking people. I wonder what they'll have to say about today's news that evidently the juvenile justice system in St. Louis is totally different for Blacks and Whites. Hmm, what s surprise that one is——not!

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Meanwhile, of course, the police have made no admission of anything.  Assuming he had been using a false ID, which he wasn't, how would that justify a police assault?  He was turned away from a business; is that a violation of law? Ultimately, the greater question is what would have happened if this young man's skin had been a different shade. Sadly, most of us know the answer to that question, which is why every police department in the country becomes open to question.

Millennials Are More Racist Than They Think | Upsetment | Scoop.it
News about race in America these days is almost universally negative. Kenneth Weene's insight:

The issue of racism is often in how people react to the news, and indeed how the news is told. Crazy is a code word for white man with problems who should be taken into custody with care while Thug is usually a code word for black man who is dangerous and should be shot on sight.

Toronto Man Arrested While Depositing Money Into His own Bank Account | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Frantz St. Fleur has accused Scotiabank of racially profiling him, leading to his arrest in April.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is what racism looks like. This time in Canada, but it is so common throughout North America and is so totally wrong. I am not sure how the bank should make amends, but clearly the employee has to be dealt with and the bank has to take some kind of socially meaningful position as well as some form of compensation to their victim. A hundred dollars? That doesn't even compensate him for his time.

Michigan cop stops black man on street for walking with hands in his pockets during cold day | Upsetment | Scoop.it
It may be freezing in Pontiac, Michigan, but if you’re a black man out for a walk it’s probably best to keep your hands out of your pockets
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Perhaps it might make more sense to question those who are made nervous by a man walking with his hands in his pockets. Perhaps it might make more sense to ask this officer to clarify just how he was told people were made nervous. Perhaps it make more sense to explore the racist attitudes of this particular cop. Just perhaps.

This is assault under cover of authority. I wish I could be on the jury awarding damages to this man. While he could have identified himself, the police were absolutely wrong.
