The Dictator of the Vatican

The Dictator of the Vatican | Upsetment | Scoop.it

Francis’s “People’s Pope” persona has always belied an autocratic temperament that is coldly efficient at achieving his aims, if not winning allies to his cause.

Kenneth Weene's insight:
There's nothing more fun to watch than a good cat fight, especially when the yowling critters wear cassocks. Here we have a nasty, screaming, outrage from the political right within the Catholic Church.

Pope says weapons manufacturers can't call themselves Christian

Pope says weapons manufacturers can't call themselves Christian | Upsetment | Scoop.it
People who manufacture weapons or invest in weapons industries are hypocrites if they call themselves Christian, Pope Francis said on Sunday.Francis issued his toughest condemnation to date of the
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It is a good thing to have an international leader who talks to our morality. I know that there are many who will say, "But the Catholic Church teaches this or did that." And they will be right in many of those criticisms. Still what a breath of fresh air this man has become. He embodies the parable of the Good Samaritan and reminds us that the practice of love and care for others is the only route by which we can make this planet a true heaven for all.

Francis: Free speech has limits

Francis: Free speech has limits | Upsetment | Scoop.it
On board the papal plane from Sri Lanka to the Philippines, Francis also said that climate change is mostly man-made, and he revealed plans for new American saint.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Obviously, we all have limits to what is acceptable humor or sarcasm or satire before we get angry. That I might get angry enough to smack somebody else in the nose doesn't make my action justified. This time the Pope has hit not just a foul ball but taken a fool's swing.

Pope Francis Visits 'Cemetery For Abortion Victims' in South Korea

Pope Francis Visits 'Cemetery For Abortion Victims' in South Korea | Upsetment | Scoop.it
It's a strong anti-abortion gesture
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I visited the U.S. military cemeteries in Belgium; they are much bigger, the crosses and stars much more substantial, but the existence of those fields of death do not deter us from making war. This maudlin gesture will not stop a single abortion. What stops abortion? Better sex education, better availability of contraception, clearer support of the sexual rights of women and especially their right to say no, and the best possible role-modeling from the community about how to be sexually responsible adults.

Pope calls for action on sex abuse

Pope calls for action on sex abuse | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Pope Francis calls for "decisive" action against clerical sex abuse in his first public statement on the scandal that has rocked the Catholic Church.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

We shall see how this call is translated into action. It is certainly time for the church to take responsibility for the damage done by priests who have been protected by the hierarchy and perhaps even more importantly to take responsibility for the hierarchy that has protected such behaviors.

The Shady Group That Played Pope Francis

The Shady Group That Played Pope Francis | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The pontiff found his reformer image tarnished when it was announced he met with Kim Davis. The group behind the political coup? The Liberty Counsel.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

There is an American based theological system that accepts every lie as long as it is directed towards their goal of a reconstructed Christianity and an American theocracy based on that faith. They are among our greatest enemies. Luckily, their level of hate and deceit makes it easy to spot them.

Pope affirms contraception ban but encourages responsible parenting, not breeding 'like rabbits'

Pope affirms contraception ban but encourages responsible parenting, not breeding 'like rabbits' | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Speaking to reporters en route home from the Philippines, Francis said plenty of church-approved ways are available to regulate births. But he said most importantly, no outside institution should impose its views on regulating family size, blasting what he called the "ideological colonization" of the developing world.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

He said, "The woman might argue that she should trust in God. "But God gives you methods to be responsible." I guess science and modern medical techniques aren't gifts from God so women aren't allowed to use them. Now that's downright absurd. And, by the way, why is it the woman's responsibility? Does that mean he endorses the conservative Islamic view that the woman must remove the temptation from the man by hiding herself? It is only when the Catholic Church accepts the right of women to have true equality and freedom that any Pontiff will be truly worth respecting.

Pope lifts ban on 'left-wing' bishop

Pope lifts ban on 'left-wing' bishop | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It is about time that the Catholic Church recognizes the Christian value of Liberation Theology. The beatification of Oscar Romero  is long overdue if you want the Church to represent the striving of decent, hard-working, but often poor people throughout the world. Next, perhaps we can have some recognition of the need for birth control. I have no doubt that were Jesus alive today and concerned as he was for people and especially those in need, he would be supporting Planned Parenthood and the use of prevention.

Politics Stalls House Resolution to Honor Pope Francis

Politics Stalls House Resolution to Honor Pope Francis | Upsetment | Scoop.it
An apparently innocuous resolution intended to honor Pope Francis is having trouble making its way through the House of Representatives – reportedly mired in politics because some lawmakers view the pontiff as "too liberal."
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I wonder if Catholics who have voted for Republican candidates in the past will recognize that the GOP has now pretty much said God is wrong. I really do want to know how my friends who are Catholics feel about this one.
