I may be the last, says Dalai Lama

I may be the last, says Dalai Lama | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Of course, according to the Tibetan belief system the soul of the Dalai Lama will continue to be passed in this world. However, the political/cultural title most likely will disappear or become a farce. Perhaps that is best in this materialistic world.

The Rise and Fall of Hindi Chini Bhai Bhai

The Rise and Fall of Hindi Chini Bhai Bhai | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The long, tricky frenemyship of Asia’s two biggest powers.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

We Americans tend to forget that there are other great countries and that other countries have their own agendas. In the long future, these two mega-populations, China and India, will assuredly have great sway in world events. While they are moving towards friendship now, the coming changes in climate and especially water availability may change that. How will they feed their billions? The hunger of Chinese and Indian people will be a key to the 2020s and 30s.

Putin does not seem to get it: despite the fact that we live in the 21st century, he is upping the ante in Ukraine and continues his 19th-century behavior. And to the puzzlement of the Western onlookers, the 19th century is winning.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

The last thing we want is a war with Russia. The last thing Russia wants is pressure from its East (not its West, which is Europe). Our diplomats should be encouraging China to approach the ex-Soviet republics of Asia, all of which, like Ukraine, having significant Russian minorities placed their during the Stalin years and all of which, like Ukraine, having a fear of Russian intentions. Once those countries start grumbling with China at their back, Russia will possibly see a different reality.

China is burning almost as much coal as the rest of the world combined. We won't solve global warming until that changes
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Another example of why unbridled econmic growth is not the best plan for the world. What good is all that stuff if we end up breathing crap?

Hong Kong Leader: We Can't Let Poor People Dominate Elections!

Hong Kong Leader: We Can't Let Poor People Dominate Elections! | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The chief executive of Hong Kong on Monday dismissed protesters' demand to allow the public to directly nominate candidates for the city's top post as unacceptable because it would allow poor people to dominate elections.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is the clearest statement I have seen of the reality that China has given up the illusion of democracy that underlay the peasants' support of the revolution. It is time for the people there to retake possession of their country and their lives. This should also be a warning to Americans (and Europeans) that the wealthy and powerful are almost always looking to take control of everything. Democracy may not be perfect, but it is better than oligarchy.

Tibetan spiritual leader cancels Cape Town trip after being refused entry to South Africa for third time in five years
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Might we see the hand of China behind this? I hope they move the conference to a country that is less concerned with trade than with human values. Meanwhile the Dalai Lama remains one of the most outstanding moral leaders in the world as does Desmond Tutu.

The Gulags of North Korea

The Gulags of North Korea | Upsetment | Scoop.it
When North Korea makes the headlines, you can be almost certain that it won't be for good reasons. With depressing regularity, we hear stories about military provocations against South Korea and the North's ongoing efforts to develop nuclear weapons. Or we hear about trivialities like the opening of an amusement park or the disgraceful antics of a former basketball star. But an issue of far greater importance than the trivial stories, and of equal importance to the security questions, gets only scant coverage: North Korea's atrocious record on human rights.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

That the rest of the world tolerates and deals with this regime, even if it is to send humanitarian aid, is an offense against our common humanity. That China continues to protect this dictatorship is one of the best reasons I know for not buying anything made in China. We should be pushing our government(s) to demand that China help stop the oppression of the people of North Korea.
