Kenneth Weene's insight:

It is not the department of agriculture but the department of mega-agri-business. The health of people is nothing when compared to the profits of the big companies.

The Sinister Side of Homeschooling

The Sinister Side of Homeschooling | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Because educating kids at home is almost entirely unregulated in much of the country, parents are able to hide their crimes—sometimes fatally.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Strangely those who fight most ardently for the rights of fetuses have little interest in the rights of children. This is a disgusting side to homeschooling that needs to be examined.

House passes GOP spending plan that defunds Obamacare | Upsetment | Scoop.it
But the stopgap spending bill is expected to be changed by the Democratic-controlled Senate.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

You have to hand it to the GOP in the House, they are persistent. So are the flies I swat and the mosquitoes I spray. Can we get rid of these pests, too?

In South Florida, a Polluted Bubble Ready to Burst | Upsetment | Scoop.it
With heavy rain driving waters from Lake Okeechobee to estuaries in the east and west, devastating wildlife, officials are looking for solutions.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Just another in the long list of environmental disasters waiting to happen in the U.S. We cannot keep imposing ourselves and our housing, energy consumption, and water use expectations on the environment without consequences.

Why Is the NSA Naming Its Secret Programs After Civil War Battles? | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The latest Edward Snowden-fueled revelation about the NSA's secret spy programs dropped Thursday evening, courtesy of a rather impressive team effort between the Guardian, the New York Times and ProPublica.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

A question that makes us wonder who, in the eyes of the espionage industry, is the enemy.

Perhaps nobody was more responsible for vilifying Obamacare than Mitch McConnell. And now the outrage McConnell fueled is being directed at him and threatening to end his political career.

Former Syrian Soldier Describes Life in the Army at the Start of War

Former Syrian Soldier Describes Life in the Army at the Start of War | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A former Syrian soldier describes the awful reality of the Assad regime’s war to Andrew Slater.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Yes, the Assad regime is evil, but it has been evil all along. Russia has supported it. Britain has done business with it. And the U.S. has recognized it. No matter how evil this regime may be, no matter how morally expedient it may be to topple it--there is no reason good enough for the American government to act as the world's policeman. It is that grandiosity that has created the low esteem with which our government is now so often viewed. And yes, that is largely due to the Iraq debacle. Let's not make fools of ourselves again.

Wadah Khanfar: There's little trust in America's motives, and an airstrike would not stop the brutal slaughter of civilians. Far better to help the rebels directly
Kenneth Weene's insight:

American foreign policy became so distorted in the years after World War II and during the Cold War that we have made ourselves into the world's greatest danger. It is not our job to protect Israel. It is not our job to change regimes and to make democracies. It is not our job to overturn dictators. It is our job to be a responsible and law-abiding member of the international community.

Man arrested during BMW test drive

Man arrested during BMW test drive | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A man who went car shopping in Gwinnett County ended up in jail during a test drive. Jon-Christopher Sowells had just driven a BMW out of Philips Motors on Highway 78 in Snellville when an officer stopped him.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Does anyone believe the outcome would have been the same had Mr. Sowells been white? Meanwhile, I wonder what was wrong with the dealer that they sent somebody on a test drive alone and without giving him the proper paperwork. And what was wrong with Mr. Sowells that he tried to refuse access to those papers in plain sight. That seems fairly foolish. This is a symphony of errors.

Shellie Zimmerman Reveals She Had Left George The Night Before the Shooting | Upsetment | Scoop.it
In an interview with ABC, Shellie Zimmerman said that she had left her husband George the night before the shooting, and suddenly the murder of Trayvon Martin makes so much more sense.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The failure of the police to investigate Zimmerman immediately and properly and the failure of the prosecution to introduce this fact as part of the overall picture is clear evidence that the law enforcement team were not interested in obtaining justice for the slain teenager. Shame on them.

A lawsuit on behalf of a group of homeless and mentally ill people claims they were bused out of Nevada and left on the streets of San Francisco with little or no medication.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Does anybody want to debate the role of race in this fiasco? Was the woman black or white? Did she say he was trying to break in or just frantically knocking on the door? How does a person who has just been in a car accident exactly charge at police? If he were white would he have been seen as a threat by anyone?

Without Warning, 57,000 Virginians Could Have Their Voter Registrations Cancelled | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Could an ongoing voter purge tip the November gubernatorial election?
Kenneth Weene's insight:

And of course there is no evidence that anyone is voting in two places, only that they have not cancelled their previous registration. By the way, there is no simple process for cancelling registrations that I know of anywhere. So how would any of these people get off the old roles and avoid this problem?

New Inquiry for Bachmann on Her Presidential Race

A federal inquiry is seeking to determine whether an outside “super PAC” coordinated strategy with Representative Michele Bachmann’s campaign staff in violation of election laws.

Brutality of Syrian Rebels Posing Dilemma in West | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Many Syrian rebels have adopted some of the chillingly ruthless tactics of the government, raising the prospect that a military strike could strengthen extremists.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Religious civil war is the most brutal (including religions like Communism) of all the evil that is human. If we look at the various sides in Syria, the lack of compassion and empathy on all sides reminds us of the basest traits of our species.

The U.S. pays $6,600 a month for a plane — which used to broadcast TV Marti to Cuba — that doesn’t fly.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

If you are wondering how absolutely ridiculous the far right can be, here is a great example. They won't end a program that has never worked and is still costing us money. Why not? Because it is their ideology. Then they want to say it is the left that is all tax and spend.

Residents of Leith, N.D., thought nothing of it when Paul Craig Cobb moved in and began buying property, until they learned of his plan to start a white supremacist colony.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The great thing is that the people of this community don't want the white supremacisists but they do want their neighbors who are an interracial couple. When you get right down to it, the strength of America is our sense of community.
