Another 22 elephants poisoned with cyanide in Zimbabwe reserve

Another 22 elephants poisoned with cyanide in Zimbabwe reserve | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Latest killings in Hwange national park make 62 elephants that have been poisoned by poachers for their ivory tusks in the African country in October
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Poaching elephants. Using poison. So disgusting that one can only marvel at the evil. I'm not a believer in the death penalty, but for these sub-humans I'd make an exception.

The Disproportionate Risks of Driving While Black

The Disproportionate Risks of Driving While Black | Upsetment | Scoop.it
An examination of traffic stops and arrests in Greensboro, N.C., uncovered wide racial differences in measure after measure of police conduct.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Forget the argument that there are many good police officers; there is something simply wrong about our nation's approach to policing, especially in its disregard for the dignity of our Black citizens. Yes, Black Lives Matter, but more than that, the Quality of Black Lives Matters.

Christian fundamentalists’ plot against the Constitution: What Kim Davis’s newly unearthed emails reveal

Christian fundamentalists’ plot against the Constitution: What Kim Davis’s newly unearthed emails reveal | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Kim Davis may be a footnote to history. But new revelations offer a frightening glimpse into fundamentalists' minds
Kenneth Weene's insight:

If this seems slightly familiar, it is probably because you follow me on the social media and have heard me say many of the same things. By the way, be sure to save Feb 7 to listen to It Matters Radio when Julie Intersoll and I will be discussing Reconstucionism, the underlying religious belief that includes dominionism.

8-year-old girl dies after a gun falls to the floor and shoots her dead while her mother was braiding her hair | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Police are consulting experts as to why the firearm discharged upon hitting the floor
Kenneth Weene's insight:

And exactly why  is there a gun there in the first place? Exactly what are you doing with a gun while you're braiding a child's hair? Guns and kids don't mix.

Boy, 6, fatally shoots toddler brother while playing ‘cops and robbers,’ dad arrested

Boy, 6, fatally shoots toddler brother while playing ‘cops and robbers,’ dad arrested | Upsetment | Scoop.it
"It's what happens when people have guns who shouldn't," said Judge James Brown of suspect Michael Santiago, who prosecutors described as a former gang member.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Of course another child victim of gun violence is tragic and of course the father should face the consequences of not only keeping an unsecured gun in his home (and showing his older son where it was) but for buying it illegally. But the real tragedy in this story is the older child, the one who pulled the trigger. First, they were playing cops and robbers but the little one was eating mac and cheese. That suggests not a game but a deliberate childish act. Second, the kid doesn't know his brother is dead; thinks he's in the hospital. Sorry, but that would require a deliberate attempt to teach the kid how to repress and deny, which doesn't bode well. I'm not a prognosticator, but I am predicting bad things from this kid down the road unless there is some help.

Texas May Deny Birth Certificates to Immigrants' Children, Judge Rules

Texas May Deny Birth Certificates to Immigrants' Children, Judge Rules | Upsetment | Scoop.it
He said more evidence is needed
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This seems to violate not only the Fourteenth Amendment but all rules of reason. The child is born; that is the necessary evidence of his/her birth lying in the bassinet. If you question the parents' names, then indicate the nature of the basis of their identification on the certificate and issue a temporary one, but don't deny the child's existence. Oh, wait, you say there's no room in the inn or even in the stable? Now I understand. You say they're Samaritans? Now I follow you completely.

In an audio recording reviewed by Vocativ, the head of Syria's al-Qaeda affiliate, also offered a $3.4 million bounty for anyone who kills Bashar al-Assad
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Russia is now part of the quagmire in Syria and with a sizable Muslim population at home this may be the time when Putin's militarism and arrogance creates hot water. What did Bernie Sanders say last night in the debate? Of course, I've been saying this for a while.

Baltimore Police investigating alleged spitting incident

Baltimore Police investigating alleged spitting incident | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The Baltimore Police Department is investigating an incident in which an officer allegedly spit on a suspect being arrested. A video of the arrest surfaced late last night on the Twitter account of activist Kwame Rose. Though the footage is dark, about five seconds in the video shows an officer...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

One of the reasons I wrote "Dew Drop" was to highlight the ways in which society looks down on and degrades the least among us. I didn't set it in Baltimore, but like the narrator says in the first chapters, "There's one in every town."

Russia Is Repeating Cold War Mistakes in Syria

Russia Is Repeating Cold War Mistakes in Syria | Upsetment | Scoop.it
In 1957, the Soviet Union’s ally Egypt intervened in Syria’s messy politics. It didn’t go well. Why does Putin think this time will be different?
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The simple reality is that with Russia, Iran, and to some extent Turkey all trying to influence events in Syria, the bombs and bullets will fly. But in the end, that country, like any Arab nation, will prove intractable to outside domination. Meanwhile, Russia is opening itself to an existential threat from Islam, for in the end the bear will have to deal with IS and other such pan-Islamic yearnings.

The Shady Group That Played Pope Francis | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The pontiff found his reformer image tarnished when it was announced he met with Kim Davis. The group behind the political coup? The Liberty Counsel.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

There is an American based theological system that accepts every lie as long as it is directed towards their goal of a reconstructed Christianity and an American theocracy based on that faith. They are among our greatest enemies. Luckily, their level of hate and deceit makes it easy to spot them.

McCain: Ford-Class Overruns May Mean Fewer Supercarriers | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday blasted the U.S. Navy's Ford-class aircraft carrier program as an acquisition debacle.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

In case you were wondering how our friends in the Military-Industrial Complex are doing, here's an answer. They are making lots of money while producing little of worth. Don't expect anything to change soon because there are military related jobs and contracts in almost every congressional district and those contractors sure know how to give political donations. I wonder what would happen if elections were publicly financed with no or minimal outside contributions. I bet the DoD would have a big problem floating such a boondoggle.

France's migrant 'cemetery' in Africa - BBC News

France's migrant 'cemetery' in Africa - BBC News | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Europe has been so transfixed by tragedies in the Mediterranean in recent years that a similar crisis in the Indian Ocean has gone almost unnoticed.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is one of those stories that just makes me sad.

I'm not sure why this is France's responsibility rather than that of the rest of the Comoros Islands. This highlights one of the issues that remains from colonialism. When colonial powers were driven out or (as in this case) left at the request of the people, what obligation remained? France offered all the islands the choice; is she now responsible for those who said go? On the other hand, the overall culture and way of life had been disrupted under French rule. Sure, if you break it, you bought it; but exactly who broke this one? No simple answers, but perhaps the real goal should be to help the other islands develop economically, educationally, and medically and allow visitor visas for short stays based on less documentation.

Police Killings of Blacks: Here Is What the Data Say

Police Killings of Blacks: Here Is What the Data Say | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The race problem revealed by the statistics on both killings and arrests of blacks reflects something larger: the structure of our society, our laws and policies.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This article makes a good point, the one that Bernie Sanders has made, that lifting Black Americans out of poverty is the most important method for showing that Black Lives Matter. What the article doesn't address is the tendency for police violence towards Blacks such as Tamir Rice to occur when there is contact between Blacks and Whites, when, for example, a kid is in a toy department or a park and playing with a toy gun. It doesn't account for the greater likelihood of a Black young adult walking down a street or driving her car ending in a police confrontation or even dead.

EXCLUSIVE: The Gulf states are talking to firms about obtaining Israeli-developed anti-missile systems to defend against Iran.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

So Israel and the Sunni States are doing business, I wonder how many of the people in these Arab states know about this coming deal and how they would react if they did know. Perhaps it's time for the Arab world to accept the existence of Israel and get down to the business of really helping the Palestinians form a new state. Perhaps it's also time for people to stop hating and fighting one another in that region — including the Iranians. Then again, perhaps it's time for pigs to fly or a messiah to arrive.

A Milwaukee County jury said Badger Guns must pay more than $5 million to two officers wounded by a man wielding a pistol that he had illegally gotten a friend to buy for him at the shop.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Being in business is not a simple right but one that depends on the social contract. Therefore, responsible business practices are a reasonable expectation from society and failure to provide due diligence should create personal and corporate liability. Now about the Volkswagens and those bad loans?!

Amazon residents resort to militias to keep out illegal loggers | Upsetment | Scoop.it
In Brazil, militias of indigenous people take up arms against illegal logging, but their tactics raise fears of greater violence.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Poachers in Africa and loggers in the Amazon, those who would despoil the treasure that is nature should face justice. Those who purchase the products of that despoiling should also be held accountable. There is no excuse for such selfishness.

Matt Ramsdell's curator insight, October 12, 2015 3:31 PM

This is a prime example of a way to save a rainforest in a very aggressive way. This group is using tactics that uses torture. Because of the violence that they using it is causing unruly and unrest within the loggers of the nation. The loggers and people of other areas are making threats to this militia of 48 men. Although they are trying to protect the environmental rainforest and all is creatures they are doing this in the wrong way.

Iran's supreme leader bans negotiations with the United States

Iran's supreme leader bans negotiations with the United States | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday banned any further negotiations between Iran and the United States, putting the brakes on moderates hoping to end Iran's isolation after reaching a nuclear deal with world powers in July. Khamenei, the highest authority in the Islamic Republic, already said last month there would be no more talks with the United States after the nuclear deal, but has not previously declared an outright ban.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

In case you don't know the history. Iran historically (say 1950s) had a tripartite process of governance in which the religious leadership, the civil leadership, and a monarch shared power. Without all three legs, there has always been a lack of moderation, be it the Shah's tyranny or the theocracy that preceded today's two-legged stool of a system. Can Iran develop a meaningful balance between mosque and state? That is the question that is most crucial. The best approach for U.S., having destabilized Iran years ago, is to treat the Iranian government with respect which includes a willingness to hear what the Supreme Leader is saying even while we reach out to the civil government.

Oregon community college gunman 'left behind manifesto' - BBC News

Oregon community college gunman 'left behind manifesto' - BBC News | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The man accused of killing nine people at a community college in Oregon had left behind a manifesto detailing his grievances, US media report.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I post this because it is important for people who oppose gun control to understand the need. We are not talking about taking guns away from normal people, we are talking about keeping weapons out of the hands of people who don't have the mental capacity or empathetic capacity to use them responsibly. In case you don't notice, this is another case with a protective mother trying to take care of her son's emotional distress by supporting his gun involvement. If you know a mother who might be doing the same "for" her child with emotional difficulties, tell her "She not guns might be responsible for the resulting deaths." She won't love you for it, but at least you won't have to condemn yourself for your silence.

Obama’s claim that ‘states with the most gun laws tend to have the fewest gun deaths’

Obama’s claim that ‘states with the most gun laws tend to have the fewest gun deaths’ | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The president made a sweeping statement but the evidence changes when suicides are removed from the gun-death data.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Obviously, there should be a second factor considered, the rurality of the state. Guns make more sense in rural states than they do in more crowed and urbanized ones. Clearly, there is a trend for more restrictive laws to lead to fewer homicides. As for suicide, well people who want to kill themselves will go with what's easiest and most at hand, so it is to be expected that fewer gun laws will result in more gun suicides, but take away the guns and those people will do something else as they do in Japan.

Merkel says can only end Syrian war with Russia's help | Upsetment | Scoop.it
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday that it would be possible to end to the civil war in Syria only with the help of Russia, which this week launched airstrikes in the war-torn country.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Glad to see that at least one world leader has finally figured out what I've known all along. The Obama administration with Secretary of State Clinton, messed up. Perhaps they knew better, but they certainly didn't dare lead in the obvious direction. If the great powers don't work together, they will assuredly end up in perpetual low-level war until we are all prostrate and the cockroaches of the world take over.
