Hundreds of poor, elderly line up for free food in Kaibab Estates West | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Last weekend’s rain kept Rosie and Jim Schwertfeger homebound for three days after their driveway turned into a soupy mess. Many of their neighbors in Kaibab Estates West — a
Kenneth Weene's insight:

All over America there are people who cannot afford healthy food. Those of us who can, should be supporting food banks, not just for holiday meals but all year. And, IMHO, we should be demanding that the government help as well.

In Prison for 25 Years, Man Says Partner of Disgraced NYPD Detective Set Him Up | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The evidence seems to be on his side.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Once again we are faced with the wrongness of criminal convictions obtained by police or prosecutor misconduct. Once again we are faced with the reality that it often misconduct directed at people of color. How do we as a society bring a halt to such evil being perpetrated as if it were on our behalf?

A frog named after Charles Darwin has gone extinct because of a deadly amphibian skin disease, scientists believe.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The world is not getting better for many species and we should be paying attention to all the reasons, including the spread of fungi and diseases that is so easy in this age of transportation.

When a guest said Obamacare made him sell his business, I called him for his full story. It was more complicated
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While I do not consider the Affordable Care Act the best way to go forward (prefering a single-payer system), I think that the reporting that has been going on has been way to ideological. This is an example of good reporting as compared to what is done on Fox.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Helping people to stay well and helping those with chronic illnesses to stay as well as possible makes sense. Endless services and unnecessary tests don't help anyone except those who expect to get rich.

Rand Paul Fights Imaginary Doughnut Ban

Rand Paul Fights Imaginary Doughnut Ban | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Fighting Big Government is more fun when you can make things up.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I don't know what Rand Paul knows and understands versus what comes out of his mouth. What I do know is that he represents the worst in American politics, someone not interested (or perhaps not capable) in educating and informing the public. Instead, he is a scare monger and an insult to those libertarians who actually think about the issues of government.

34 years after being wrongly convicted, a man savors his new freedom

34 years after being wrongly convicted, a man savors his new freedom | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Kash Delano Register sat in a park Sunday afternoon, taking it all in.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

If the police threatened a witness, then the city bears the total responsibility for his pain and loss. If this is true and those cops are still alive, they owe him their very lives to say nothing of every cent they own. It is unconscionable and even worse is the fact that the vast majority of such cases seem to involve black men. I guess if a Black can be accused, then proper care for the process isn’t important to the police. BUT it is!

Lawyers seek new trial for 14-year-old South Carolina boy executed in 1944 | The Raw Story | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Kenneth Weene's insight:

There is something so not right about this story as to demand redress, but redress requires a capacity for self-judgment which is sadly lacking in much of America today, especially where race is involved. Shame on South Carolina then and continuing into the present.

10 of the Worst Wrongful Imprisonment Cases

10 of the Worst Wrongful Imprisonment Cases | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Justice must be served. But it's not always served the right way, like when people go to prison for crimes that they never committed. Here are 10 stories about people who suffered the hard consequences of a broken justice system.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It is not enough for the state to prove its case, it is our obligation as a society to provide the defense with all reasonable support, including and perhaps especially DNA testing. There is certainly no more heinous crime than the police and/or district attorney withholding or fabricating evidence. The recent 10 day jail sentence of Ken Anderson  in Texas is, IMHO, the tip of the iceberg.

A New Mexico man is suing police for allegedly having him undergo "shockingly invasive medical procedures" on an invalid warrant, all without finding any drugs.

Hundreds of thousands of bridges across the country are in bad shape, and the result can be tragic.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

So you don't want to pay taxes. Fine, but just what will you do when the bridge falls down or the road becomes one giant pothole? Government is not the problem. The problem has been a preoccupation with making war and maintaining empire instead of providing government.

Mobility for young American adults falls to 50-year low

Mobility for young American adults falls to 50-year low | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Mobility for young American adults falls to 50-year low,U.S. mobility for young adults has fallen to the lowest level in more than 50 years as cash-strapped 20-somethings shun home-buying and refrain from major moves in a weak job market.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Generation Wait, what a sad commentary on our times. The worst part is that were we to prioritize properly, pay decent wages and fund infrasturcture and education instead of militarism, if we were to set high enough tax rates to discourage lifestyles centered around amassing wealth so that bright young people would want to find other careers, we could have a better society with work for all. And if we were to recognize the value of the arts and recreation instead of making almost all activity about money, we could have a better way of live. Ah, well, I am a dreamer.

Personnel costs are a growing threat to defense, military leaders tell Congress

Personnel costs are a growing threat to defense, military leaders tell Congress | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Overhead for the services is crushing their budgets, military leaders say.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The real kick in this story comes at the end when we realize that some of those overhead costs are mandates from congress and have no place in the budget. Of course, from my point of view, the easy thing to do is cut back on the size of the military. One more observation, we have military families on food stamps and in need so it sure isn't the average guy who's breaking the bank. Perhaps we can also cut back on the number of brass.

A government subsidy critical to the survival of hospitals treating large numbers of poor patients is being sharply reduced under the new health law.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

A real problem with the Affordable Health Care law that needs to be addressed. Sadly, the House Republicans are refusing to revisit this issue (see article, pg 2, near bottom). There is much to be changed in the law to improve and make it work. It is time to stop trying to destroy and and to start trying to improve it.
