Arizona GOP censures McCain for 'disastrous' record | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Delivering a strong rebuke to U.S. Sen. John McCain, Arizona Republicans passed a resolution to censure the one-time presidential nominee for what they characterize as a liberal record that has been
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The number of GOP whack-jobs here in Arizona is laughable. While I don't like Mr. McCain, I have to say this is truly ridiculous.

Poll Shows Most Republicans Think People Are Poor Because They Don't Work Hard Enough

Poll Shows Most Republicans Think People Are Poor Because They Don't Work Hard Enough | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Whether you're rich or poor, Republicans believe that's on you.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The GOP is once again clearly out of step, but obviously many things contribute. Can your parents give you the best opportunities? Were you born with talents and other advantages or perhaps with some serious negatives. Did your early childhood scar you in ways that make it difficult? Finally, and certainly part of the equation, are you willing to put in the effort. But, please don't tell me that somebody born in a migrant labor situation isn't willing to work hard and don't tell me that being the scion of a wealthy family with connections to Yale didn't help George W., who never struck me as a worker.

Cop 'Stops And Frisks' African American Teen, Literally Destroying His Genitals | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A 16-yr-old African American boy was sexually assaulted by a police officer during a "stop and frisk" pat-down. The assault was committed with such violence that the youth's testicles were literall...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This needs an investigation not internally by the police but by an external authority. If the story proves true, there is absolutely no punishment too severe for the officer involved and no payment of damages too high for the city. This is obscene beyond any imagination.

Four Questionable Claims Obama Has Made on NSA Surveillance

Four Questionable Claims Obama Has Made on NSA Surveillance | Upsetment | Scoop.it
President Obama, who is delivering a speech on surveillance policy today, has made a series of misleading statements about the NSA.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

In my opinion, the NSA (along with the CIA) has become more a threat to our way of life than a guardian. Sadly, Mr. Obama seems to have bought into the system rather than maintaining an awareness of its inherent tendency to perpetuate and expand itself.

Study: Rodent empathy is environmental, not genetic

Study: Rodent empathy is environmental, not genetic | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Rats will only help other rats they are socially familiar with, whether they are of the same or a different strain.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The human question this evokes: How do we decide who is like us and who is not? For rats it may be as easy as what they have seen in the past, but for us it is perhaps the real test to recognize the common core of humanity. That is a test far too many of us humans fail.

Calls for Oversight in West Virginia Went Unheeded | Upsetment | Scoop.it
As chemical accidents continued in West Virginia, so did calls for increased oversight, but those recommendations went unheeded by lawmakers, federal regulators said.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Can't be said too often: Business is important, but the first concern of good government should be the quality of life of its citizens. Sadly, GOP dominated state governments tend to forget that simple rule.

Family of Pregnant Texan on Life Support: 'We Know She's Gone' | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The family of a pregnant Texas woman who is on life support against her wishes say they want to educate the public about an advance directives law that has put them through "pure hell."
Kenneth Weene's insight:

And when this child is born, most likely suffering from severe brain damage, will the state of Texas take any responsibility for its care? Will they help the family deal with their rage at the child, a sad but horribly likely rage that results from this trauma? Of course not. This is just some of the worst of the anti-abortion mentality.

Officer Randall Kerick fired 12 shots at the unarmed former Florida A&M football player
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The ultimate question is was race a major factor in this horrible act of police brutality and stupidity. The key question is what will the other officers say. Will they try to say that Jonathan Ferrell appeared to be a danger or will they say Kerrick acted unnecessarily. So two color issues -- one black and white; the other blue.

Another Chris Christie outrage: Data shows stark racial gap in Sandy aid distribution | Upsetment | Scoop.it
"Neglect and callous indifference" for black and Latino Sandy victims, group charges
Kenneth Weene's insight:

They, the state government under Mr. Christie, made up the criteria for who got what, but of course making up those criteria had nothing to do with race, just which kinds of people are more likely to use the money properly. Somehow this feels uncomfortable, especially since they then didn't give the information willingly but had to be sued.

WASHINGTON: Emergency jobless aid: An economic boost or a bust? | Economy | McClatchy DC | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Supporters of the longer unemployment benefits that the Senate is now debating make a humanitarian argument: Jobless people need the money to keep a roof over their heads and bread on their tables.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While I would not push people out onto the streets, neither would I continue them unquestioningly. Perhaps this is where the functions of social workers come into play. Perhaps there needs to be more supervision offered to the long-term unemployed, supervision designed to help get them back into the job market. We may also have to face the prospect of some people never being able to earn an adequate living, in which case we need to assist them but not to allow them to live without working.
