Trump charity gave $100,000 to David Bossie’s Citizens United that helped fund lawsuit against mogul’s foe | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Donald Trump’s charitable foundation gave $100,000 in 2014 to a conservative activist group that was used to help finance a federal lawsuit against New York state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman — the same public official who was suing the real estate mogul for fraud over the operations of Trump University
Kenneth Weene's insight:
How do you spell inappropriate? I spell it Trump. One more totally unacceptable behavior from the clown of the GOP.

Is Alabama’s judiciary too white?

Is Alabama’s judiciary too white? | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Appellate judges in Alabama are elected through an 'at-large' system that critics say discriminates against black judicial candidates in a state still struggling with a racially-charged past.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
If the topic of race and justice interests you, I hope you'll listen to this podcast from It Matters Radio. I was delighted to have Time Magazine's Jay Newton-Small join me to discuss her views. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HnSp1QWdYo

Nigerian Students Sue Alabama College for Treating Them ‘Like Animals’

Nigerian Students Sue Alabama College for Treating Them ‘Like Animals’ | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Alabama State University got millions to educate and house exchange students who say they were charged more and given less.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
The Chinese empire taught the world about the value of an educational system as the basis for advancement. The Romans gave the world a standard of military excellence. The British taught us about the need for a civil service. The Spanish emphasized service to God. The French insisted on the importance of a common language. Now we have the American empire; it's message to the world, "Go With Greed."

Donald Trump and his anti-animal agriculture advisers would destroy Obama’s legacy of protection.

Company That Had Convicts Build Defective Combat Helmets Got Off With a Small Fine

Company That Had Convicts Build Defective Combat Helmets Got Off With a Small Fine | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The hero who reported the alleged scam is back in jail, while none of the executives involved face criminal charges for the fraud.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
While incorporation is supposed to protect investors from the consequences of a company's actions, it was never intended to protect companies from the consequences of their own fraud and certainly not to protect individual administrators from responsibility for breaking the law. This travesty is brought to us by the military-industrial-espionage complex and its buddy the corrections business.

Meet the parents who won’t let their children study literature

Meet the parents who won’t let their children study literature | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Forcing college kids to ignore the liberal arts won't help them in a competitive economy.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Parents more and more want to control their children's lives. While there is much to be said in support of parental influence in education, the simple reality is that many of their views are not helpful. We need the liberal arts both as backgrounds for almost all people from which to work and grow and because there are skills that come from studying subjects like literature, capacities to understand the world in different ways. Consider, for example the role of good speculative fiction in expanding the mind-set of science and engineering. Then, too, there is the great pleasure of reading books that make you think and feel. At any rate, I hope you'll discover the pleasure and the provocative thinking of Memoirs From The Asylum.

They grew up as American citizens, then learned that they weren’t | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Brought here as children but never naturalized, international adoptees push to close the legal loophole that keeps them from citizenship.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
This is one of the saddest immigration topic of all. These aren't even the dream kids, they are the used kids, used by people who wanted to adopt but had no notion of responsibility. Should they be considered illegal aliens? To say they are would mean America had no conscience or compassion?

In St. Louis schools, water fountains are symbols of inequality again

In St. Louis schools, water fountains are symbols of inequality again | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Dangerous levels of lead in dozens of public schools have made the water undrinkable — but not for white, wealthy kids.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
If we do not provide the essentials of life, water, food, air, shelter, and the like to all our children, then we are necessarily moving either towards a feudal system or a revolution. I cannot imagine anything more clearly wrong than allowing those children who' come from less affluent homes to suffer the inherent penalty of drinking contaminated water. Shame on us as a country if we don't choose a better path.

Community Gives 10-Year-Old Killed on Birthday the Party She Never Had | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The community is planning birthday party for the 10-year-old New Mexico girl who was brutally murdered on her birthday
Kenneth Weene's insight:
OMG. This is one of the most disgusting things I've ever heard. What is wrong with the people who want to celebrate this child's birthday? How does that help anyone except those who take delight in feeling superior? How about using that same time, money, and effort to work for better child protection laws and services? As for the perpetrators, can we recreate that movie scene, you know the one with the horny bear. Yeah, for both of them.

What Donald Trump Knew About Undocumented Workers at His Signature Tower

What Donald Trump Knew About Undocumented Workers at His Signature Tower | Upsetment | Scoop.it
For 36 years, Donald Trump has denied knowingly using undocumented workers to demolish the building that would be replaced with Trump Tower
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Lots of people think Hillary's a liar and a thief, but in The Donald's case we have proof that he's a "gannet." For those who don't know New York or Yiddish, that's a thief, a user, somebody who skirts the law to get what he wants. So tell me again why you think he's such a great business man. Migrant mothers at Pennsylvania center suspend hunger strike ‘due to threats’

Migrant mothers at Pennsylvania center suspend hunger strike ‘due to threats’ | Upsetment | Scoop.it
22 women who refused meals to protest their indefinite detention at the Berks County Residential Center in Pennsylvania say officials ‘pushed’ them to eat
Kenneth Weene's insight:
As part of America's determination to guard our borders, we have become inhumane in the treatment of families. Obviously, the best solution if for places like El Salvador to become safe places for mothers and their children, but until then can we call ourselves a good nation while we lock these people up and try to send them back to the fire that rages in their homeland? Perhaps people who have suffered so much to get here deserve sanctuary, perhaps conditional and temporary but certainly not cruel detention without education for the children and freedom for the rule-abiding.

Trump: I Would Stop Crime By Letting ‘Tough’ Cops Take Charge

Trump: I Would Stop Crime By Letting ‘Tough’ Cops Take Charge | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Pushed by Fox News host Bill O’Reilly to provide specifics on curbing violent crime in cities like Chicago, Donald Trump said Monday that he would simply put “tough” cops in charge.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
In case folks don't get this, it's an appeal to the worst of our cops to take over, not those who want to protect and serve but those who want to beat and control. Is it the way to control crime? I think in the end it will result in warfare in our streets. The way to fight crime is to first help people find better ways to live and second to make wealth more equitable in its distribution. There is less need for crime when people can find life and dignity more easily, not when they are struggling to get the crumbs from the tables of the wealthy and powerful.

The Legal Case for Blocking the Dakota Access Pipeline

The Legal Case for Blocking the Dakota Access Pipeline | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Did the U.S. government help destroy a major Sioux archeological site?
Kenneth Weene's insight:
As is often the case with the Army Corps of Engineers, getting the engineering project accomplished was more important than the human considerations. It isn't just archeology, the process was flawed and the potential environmental consequences ignored. Meanwhile, they and the construction company are trying to push ahead instead of respecting the judicial process. And for what? Oil that we don't necessarily need at this point in time.

Mission impossible: What the U.S. military doesn’t know (and neither do you)

Mission impossible: What the U.S. military doesn’t know (and neither do you) | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Keeping track of U.S. Special Ops in Africa
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Is the goal of American military involvement in Africa really to help legitimate governments work to stop rebellions or is it to safeguard America's interests in Africa's mineral riches and emerging markets by maintaining artificial ties to various militaries? In fact, should any African nation with any kind of potential wealth trust the US or its major competitor, China? At least, from the African point of view, China can invest directly while the US has to play games and hope that corporations will invest.(Instead of making lots of money selling weapons there.) As for the staggering logistical and infrastructure needs of the continent, well nobody seems to interested in helping with those as long as no resulting major health threat is going to reach our shores. In the end, Sub-Saharan Africa and possibly the north as well will end up festering until a Mao or Bolivar comes along to organize massive change.

Obama's 'Rebalancing' to Asia Falters in Sleepy Laos | Upsetment | Scoop.it
It may have been Barack Obama’s first trip to sleepy Laos, but American foreign policy still haunts this landlocked Southeast Asian nation
Kenneth Weene's insight:
How does America engage Southeast Asia? Years after the insanity of the Vietnam War, can we finally begin building realistic alliances that can help the region find its way towards human rights while blunting the rise of China? No easy answers but some major questions will face the new administration. At least Mr. Obama has made a beginning.

In Colorado, a revolt against legalized marijuana - The Boston Globe

In Colorado, a revolt against legalized marijuana - The Boston Globe | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The voters of Pueblo will consider terminating retail marijuana sales and operations in November.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Seems like the real problem is that marijuana production and sales have created more money in the community, which means more crime. As for the few floaters who have come into the country to grow for illegal sales elsewhere, that's hooey. In a country with that small a population, law enforcement should know everybody. How hard would it be to identify those who were doing that, besides which why is that illegal as long as what they are doing in Pueblo is legal there? Just let the Feds know and let them pick up the product when it leaves the state. At any rate, how would you vote? I know I'd vote to keep the legalization and maybe try to change what the kids were being taught in programs like DARE about drugs.

Discriminated: Michael Brown (center) and his family were denied service at a South Carolina restaurant after a white woman claimed she felt threatened
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Then the restaurant had the gall to offer them a free meal if they wanted to return. Big effing deal, a free meal. My guess the manager would offer it to go. This is what hate and bigotry look like. I have no idea where there are Wild Wing Cafes, but I hope that nobody who cares bout justice will go near them.

Mother of three survives car crash — only to be gunned down by the other driver, police say | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Witnesses told police Deborah Pearl had her hands up in the air when she was shot after a traffic accident.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
I dare anyone, the NRA, some gun owner, anyone, to tell me that this man should have owned a weapon. I dare anyone to say that this woman's murder is collateral damage for allowing people to own weapons. If ever there was a poster person for insisting on background checks for owners of guns, it should be this lady. Gum madness has to end somewhere; perhaps we can all speak out against such senseless violence.

Alaska's Students Will Be Taught to Evade a School Shooter | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Alaska schools will implement an active training approach to teach teachers and students how to evade a school shooter
Kenneth Weene's insight:
What they don't get is that the crazy who wants to shoot up a school is going to find this an invitation to a game. I don't want to see kids being shot. I don't want to see the schools teaching them to live in terror. Most importantly, I don't want the schools inviting madness by this kind of program.

Your drain on drugs: Meth in Baltimore's streams

Your drain on drugs: Meth in Baltimore's streams | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A new study finds aquatic life in Baltimore is being exposed to illegal drugs methamphetamine and amphetamine and it's having an impact on their growth.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Another reason to stop the war on drugs. Dumping prescribed drugs is bad enough for the environment, but when we have no control over the production and distribution of the self-medicating drugs, we are asking to have them dumped incorrectly and produced in ways that produce ecological disasters. We need to help people fight the reasons for getting hooked, help them get alternatives, and stop the obvious failed approach of making drugs a toy for the  criminal justice system. .

Instead Of Detailing His Immigration Policy, Trump Polls Town Hall Crowd | Upsetment | Scoop.it
After signaling over the past few days that he could soften his policy on immigration and deportation, Donald Trump on Wednesday night made it clear that he has yet to finalize his policy.

During the second installment of his Fox News town hall with Sean Hannity, Trump dodged questions about the specifics of his immigration policy and instead polled the audience on what he should do.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
The good news is that Trump seems to be figuring out that he doesn't know what he's doing. The bad news is that he things a bunch of people at a rally can show him the way. Seriously, is this leadership? Nope, it's called being a carnival barker.

Cops Framed Schizophrenic Woman as Killer Lesbian, Sending Her to Prison for 35 Years

Cops Framed Schizophrenic Woman as Killer Lesbian, Sending Her to Prison for 35 Years | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Cathy Woods was jailed for 35 years in the slaying of Michelle Mitchell, who was last seen with a man. Now she’s suing, saying cops framed her as a killer lesbian.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
when cops prey on the most vulnerable among us, they not only lose any right to respect from the public or their fellow officers. This story indicts the police department and city of Reno and that the statement by the attorney for the city indicates a callus  disregard for justice that defies any standard of decency. Ian disgusted to think that anybody in Nevada and especially in Reno can say anything other than such a miscarriage of justice needs to be rectified to the degree it possibly can be.
