A clear case of self-defense rallies supporters of gun rights

A clear case of self-defense rallies supporters of gun rights | Upsetment | Scoop.it
As the national gun debate raged, a mother in Georgia fired shots that echoed across the country.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Except this isn't a clear case of self-defense. He ran away from a woman who challenged him with a phone in her hand and then went past the goodies to steal to look for this lady and her kids in a crawl space. Something isn't quite kosher with this story. And why did she call her husband instead of 911? Nope, can we have Perry Mason weigh in on this one?

And, yes, I do believe in the right to defend yourself in your home and the right to own guns. Just not sure I believe this story.

Anti-Jewish rally in Hungary capital

Anti-Jewish rally in Hungary capital | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Hundreds of members of Hungary's far-right Jobbik party stage a rally in Budapest against the hosting of the World Jewish Congress.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Does anybody honestly believe that if the Jews of the world had the money and desire to buy a country they would pick Hungary? Now if they were talking New Zealand or Costa Rica, maybe even Holland, but Hungary? Always knew antisemites were dumb.

Gun control 2013: Gun violence victims demand meeting with Jeff Flake | Upsetment | Scoop.it
An Arizona woman injured in the Tucson shooting that wounded Gabrielle Giffords and a mother whose son was killed in last year's movie theater shooting in Colorado demanded a meeting Thursday with Republican Sen.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Flake is too much a coward to deal with the people who have a real issue with his stance on gun control.

The Least Popular Senator in America

The Least Popular Senator in America | Upsetment | Scoop.it
PHOENIX — In between interviews with immigration restrictionists and before heading to the U.S.-Mexico border, I stopped by the local office of newly elected Sen. Jeff Flake—a proud Gang of Eight member.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The man is a weasel, and I had thought him honorable. He never offered an amendment to correct this supposed fault, and how would you differentiate online sales by friends versus commercial transactions? I know my friends' phone numbers; if I were a personal transaction, I'd phone or text them.

Republicans introduce tuition tax credit bill

Republicans introduce tuition tax credit bill | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A Republican-sponsored bill that would give tax credits to parents of students in private schools has been introduced in the Legislature.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Nah, they're not the party of wealth and privilege, just want to help those poor parents struggling with private school tuitions. The Republican Party has left the building, or maybe we should show them out.

Federal judicial vacancies reaching crisis point

Federal judicial vacancies reaching crisis point | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Federal judges have been retiring at a rate of one per week this year, driving up vacancies that have nearly doubled since President Obama took office.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Even when they have approved the nominee, the GOP will block his/her confirmation. It is time that Americans recognize that the Republican party isn't just the party of NO, it is the party of national destruction.

Lawyer: Ricin Elvis Impersonator House Unlivable

Lawyer: Ricin Elvis Impersonator House Unlivable | Upsetment | Scoop.it
OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi man’s house is uninhabitable after investigators searched it but failed to find evidence of the deadly poison ricin, a lawyer said Monday, arguing that the government should repair the home.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Sure they had a right and obligation to search, but didn't they also have an obligation to serve and protect. The man was a suspect not convicted in a court of law. We have to rein in the paramilitary thinking of law enforcement. I hope the government will do the right thing and in the process will find out why this bunch acted like Cossacks on a pogrom instead of responsible police.

Tamerlan Was Denied Boxing Title

Tamerlan Was Denied Boxing Title | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Since he wasn't a U.S. citizen.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This makes sense to me. Denied his success as a boxer because of his legal status, the guy's anger turned to mental illness. It goes along with the comments I've seen about his sense of superiority and distance from others, a schizoid quality mixed with a major narcissistic injury. How sad.

Bill to end sequester's air travel delays flies through Congress

Bill to end sequester's air travel delays flies through Congress | Upsetment | Scoop.it
WASHINGTON — Congress approved a quick fix Friday to end the flight delays snarling the nation's airports, and President Obama will sign the bill when it reaches the White House , showing how swiftly compromise can be found when powerful...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I know that I'm being insensitive to the needs of many including to some of my friends and loved ones, but this bill is wrong, wrong, wrong. The sequester was supposed to be unpleasant and unacceptable so the Congress and White House would work towards a real plan. If there are step by step corrections, there will never be a meaningful compromise worked out.

Senate Passes Bill To End Air Traffic Control Furloughs | Upsetment | Scoop.it
WASHINGTON (AP) — WASHINGTON (AP) — Legislation to end furloughs of air traffic controllers and delays for millions of travelers is headed to a House vote after a dark-of-night vote in the Senate that took place after most lawmakers had…...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

So the march to get around sequestration begins. Heck, we can't inconvenience the members of Congress who like to fly to and from their states and districts. I thought the whole idea was to make the cutbacks so unpleasnat that there would have to be a real overall deal. My bad, expecting the United States Congress to take real responsibility and to work with the White House to create a real plan. And POTUS will sign this piece of dreck? Shame on them all.

Travelers Left Waiting After Big Cuts

Travelers Left Waiting After Big Cuts | Upsetment | Scoop.it
-- Commercial airline flights started backing up and delayed some travelers Monday, a day after air traffic controllers started going on furlough because of government spending cuts.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

When I said the sequester would ave effects on air travel and safety, some of my friends said that was silly, that the system would work just fine. Well, maybe not. Maybe it will become clear that we have to rethink  that kill government approach, you know the starve it until it dies Norquist idea. It really is dumb.

Pro-Business Decisions Are Defining This Supreme Court

Pro-Business Decisions Are Defining This Supreme Court | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A new analysis finds the current Supreme Court to be by far the most pro-business of any since World War II.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Was there anybody who didn't already know this? This Supreme Court thinks that corporations are direct descents from Adam and Eve or at least from Jesus Christ. They have lost the sense of proportion that T.R., Taft, and Wilson tried to give back to the country after the last corruption of the late nineteenth century.

Lebanon civil marriage raises hope for change

Lebanon civil marriage raises hope for change | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Ratification of country's first non-religious nuptial seen as step towards more secular society despite criticism.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While we in the U.S. and most of Europe battle over marriage equality for our gay and lesbian community, in the Middle East, to just get married without clergy is a major first step for civil rights. Congratulations to these two brave Lebanese Muslims, one Sunni and one Shia, whose love has taken precedence over the fractiousness of their respective religious communities.

Lawmaker Claims Shocking Proof Boston Bombing Was Government Plot | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The New Hampshire state legislator who has said the federal government caused the Boston Marathon bombing claimed proof in a victim who lost both legs and "was not in pain."
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is what one might call a very sick idiot. I guess she never heard of delayed shock or the neurochemistry of pain. I hope people recognize that she is delusional.

GOP Battles A Threat To Gun Rights That Even The NRA Says Doesn’t Exist

GOP Battles A Threat To Gun Rights That Even The NRA Says Doesn’t Exist | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Republican lawmakers are pushing legislation aimed at combating a threat to gun rights that even the National Rifle Association has described as pure fiction.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The GOP is becoming the party of the deranged conspiracy theories, and nobody better typifies that than Inhofe. Let any nut with a blog suggest that the government is doing something nefarious, and this loon jumps to the "rescue". Reminds me of a character from "Memoirs From the Asylum."

WASHINGTON -- The sunny, confident President Barack Obama who was the master of all that he surveyed at the White House Correspondents' Dinner last Saturday night was nowhere in sight at the podium in the White House press room Tuesday morning.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is when we get to see if Obama has the true mettle. Maybe he should read some Harry Truman speeches. Meanwhile, this is good reporting from my friend Howard Fineman.

Would Americans stomach a war in Syria? - By David Kenner

Would Americans stomach a war in Syria? - By David Kenner | Upsetment | Scoop.it

As President Barack Obama mulls what to do about evidence that the Syrian regime used chemical weapons against its own citizens, two new polls gauging Americans' attitudes toward intervention won't make his decision any easier.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

I feel for the people of Syria, but I see no way in which American boots on the ground will help the people. Humanitarian aid after the civil war ends is the best thing we can and should offer. What do you think?

Ariz. Governor Signs Bill Requiring Buyback Guns To Be Resold

Ariz. Governor Signs Bill Requiring Buyback Guns To Be Resold | Upsetment | Scoop.it
PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona cities and counties that hold community gun buyback events will have to sell the surrendered weapons instead of destroying them under a bill Gov. Jan Brewer signed into law Monday.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

By this reasoning is the government not also obligated to sell drugs and counterfeit documents rather than destroy them? And since the money for such buybacks of guns is typically donated, are the guns actually property of the government? Finally, what is accomplished by requiring a shell non-profit be created to buy the guns, which means that resources will be spent on basically setting up what is an outsourcing of police work. What stupid governance.

False Flags, Sharia Law, and Gun Grabs: GOP Lawmakers Embrace The Crazy | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The conspiracy theories percolating up to local party leaders and even the halls of Congress should be a warning sign for the GOP, writes John Avlon.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

In case you missed it, the Grand Old Party is suffering from its own brand of craziness. Time for Republican leadership to get things under control before the party stops having any credibility with the vast majority of sane Americans.

The National Women’s Law Center is joining forces with a Michigan-area law firm to file a complaint on behalf of a young woman who was sexually assaulted by one of her high school’s star basketball players.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

American society has become too much about the almighty greenback and not enough about decency and civility. Any "educator" who would put the rapist's career ahead of justice for the victim should be getting "re-educated" in a prison.

Is Iraq next?

Is Iraq next? | Upsetment | Scoop.it
In the last few years, the headlines have been dominated by popular uprisings against longtime leaders in the Arab world, but the relatively “new” leadership in Iraq has not been spared the same type of unrest.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

With all its ineptitude, the Bush administration gave the people of Iraq the beginnings of yet another failed Arab government. Perhaps there is something about Arab culture that is creating this endless stream of dictators, revolutions, and more dictators. Perhaps it is just part of the historical process much like France went through and Russia seems to be going through again. It is a sad story; it is a human story.

Last Wednesday, shortly after Senate Republicans used a filibuster to derail an already watered-down compromise on extending background checks, President Obama walked to the Rose Garden and delivered a blistering speech that blasted the lawmakers...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Well, color me very upset. For starters I now totally oppose Jeff Flake. His written words and his talks with Gabby and her husband were all well and good, but when it came to vote, the craven coward bowed to the NRA. Shame on him.
