New England confronts heroin epidemic | Al Jazeera America | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Death toll rising from opiate scourge, as state and local governments struggle to implement effective new laws
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The great need is for a multi-pronged approach starting with education and offering people alternative interests (the most important part of prevention in many instances), counseling and chemical treatments, and arming first responders with the training and medication necessary for the prevention of death. At the same time, legalization is necessary both to reduce the allure and to make such drug addictions more open for discussion and treatment as well as to facilitate the secondary issues such as needle related infections.

Dem Gov: 'If It's The Last Thing I Do,' I'm Going To Fight For Medicaid Expansion

Dem Gov: 'If It's The Last Thing I Do,' I'm Going To Fight For Medicaid Expansion | Upsetment | Scoop.it
WISE, Va. (AP) — In his first months on the job, Virginia Gov. Terry McAullife is trying to capitalize on Democrats' takeover of top state offices and the state Senate by pushing a key element of President Barack Obama's health care law through...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

If you don't understand that there is a basic difference between the Democrats and Republicans, perhaps this is the place to start rethinking. One side believes that the health and welfare of the citizens is the major concern and the other focuses on keeping taxes lower for the wealthy and corporations.

WASHINGTON -- An ethics watchdog filed a formal request Wednesday for an investigation of National Republican Campaign Committee Chairman Rep. Greg Walden (Ore.), citing his team's use of phony websites.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Strange how the GOP keeps showing up on the unethical side. Shouldn't the party of voter fraud reform also at least appear to be on the side of electioneering fraud reform? I guess not when it

's the Republicans; what was I thinking?

WASHINGTON: Health care enrollments reach 4.2 million, but young adults remain elusive | Health Care | McClatchy DC

WASHINGTON: Health care enrollments reach 4.2 million, but young adults remain elusive | Health Care | McClatchy DC | Upsetment | Scoop.it
More than 4.2 million people have signed up for coverage on the nation’s health insurance marketplaces through February, but low participation from young adults and early technical problems with the website have jeopardized the government’s goal of enrolling 6 million people by March 31.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The young never understand the need for health insurance until it is too late. In a way, #Obamacare has made that problem worse since they are now guaranteed that they will be able to get insurance even after problems appear. We need a national health insurance plan with reasonable rules and limits.

Roy Ortiz Survived in Air Pocket Inside Submerged Car

What a strange case. Obviously, he can claim they were negligent and maybe they were. On the other hand, does that mean it would have been better for them to let him die? What do you think?

WASHINGTON: Higher-income students get more public money for their education | Education | McClatchy DC | Upsetment | Scoop.it
It's not just colleges and universities that are shifting their financial aid from lower-income to higher-income students.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It is truly time for the American people to reassess the concentration of wealth that is going on in our country. The American dream is being squeezed by the greed of those with more, and education, the route to a better life, is now also being placed in the service of the wealthy.

Be warned: The sinkholes are coming for our classic automobiles.

Not sure how upsetting this is since I'm not a big Corvette enthusiast, but the idea that Mother Earth is coming after our classic automobiles just seems too good to not share.

Senate Rejects Blocking Military Commanders From Sexual Assault Cases

Senate Rejects Blocking Military Commanders From Sexual Assault Cases | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The measure, pushed by Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand, Democrat of New York, received 55 votes — five short of the 60 votes needed for advancement to a floor vote.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I can think of no greater shame for our country than the apparent inability to control sexual abuse within our military. Sadly, this problem often stems from the top down, with commanders protecting the sexual abusers in the name of solidarity. Just as police review boards were and are necessary, such external oversight for the military is not only desirable but also essential.

The Use of Solitary Confinement as Punishment for Teens.

By: Trey Bundy, The Center for Investigative Reporting

NEW YORK — There’s not much inside “the box.”
Kenneth Weene's insight:

"Only the U.S., Somalia and South Sudan have declined to ratify the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of the Child, which prohibits juvenile solitary confinement as a matter of international law."

What is wrong with our country? Are we so afraid of giving up our sovereignty that we will sacrifice our humanity?

C.I.A. Employees Face New Inquiry Amid Clashes on Detention Program | Upsetment | Scoop.it
An inquiry into the conduct of Central Intelligence Agency employees began after lawmakers complained that the agency was improperly monitoring the work of staff members of a Senate committee.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

For a long time I have been saying that the espionage community is as great a threat to our way of life as the military-industrial complex. Perhaps some of those politicians in DC are ready to hear that message.

An 18-year-old New Jersey student takes her family to court for her school bills
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is the kind of family drama we all love. I can see the movie version now. How incredibly sad. I wonder if they have tried any kind of counseling. I wonder if they have good reasons for opposing her boyfriend. Lots of good short story material, so I invite you to write your own.

Giant virus resurrected from 30,000-year-old ice | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Largest virus yet discovered hints at viral diversity trapped in permafrost.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I love science and think discovering what lays below the permafrost is both interesting and potentially important as preparation for global warming, but it also scares the heck out of me. Are we humans really ready to deal with worlds unknown when we can't handle ourselves all that well right here and now?

WASHINGTON: Some in GOP think George W. Bush should mediate South Sudan conflict | World | McClatchy DC | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Salva Kiir, the president of South Sudan, spent decades in the bush of Central Africa outfitted in dusty army fatigues and an army beret. Since becoming president in 2011, however, the rebel leader-turned politician is rarely seen without his black cowboy hat. It signals his ascent to statesmanship. But more importantly, it’s a cherished gift from an old friend – George W. Bush.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Seriously? Somehow the idea of George W. Bush as international mediator leaves me laughing. He may love South Sudan, but he never struck me as somebody to smooth the water.

Innocents Lost: Preserving families but losing children

Innocents Lost: Preserving families but losing children | Upsetment | Scoop.it
After Florida cut down on protections for children in troubled homes, deaths soared. The children died in ways cruel, outlandish, predictable, and preventable.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I share this knowing that there is no simple answer. How do we protect children from neglect and abuse while keeping families together? The answer may be that we can only do so by providing more supervision, which flies in the face of our libertarian beliefs. Anyway, it is important that we, not just those in Florida, the hope of this story, but all of us, think about this problem because it isn't going to get better--not in Florida or anywhere--without some realistic and meaningful action.

Susan Reimer: Simple blood test could predict Alzheimer's; would you want to know? | Opinion | McClatchy DC | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Georgetown University scientists have reported on what they believe to be a promising - not to mention easy and inexpensive - blood test for Alzheimer's disease. But would you want to know?
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Of course I'd want to know and to take both those prophylactic steps I could fine and make plans for how to appropriately care for or end my last years. The problem is do I want others to know, particularly employers, insurers, or even well-meaning social workers.

Tesla ban in New Jersey an opening salvo in war with automakers | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Yesterday’s vote by the New Jersey Motor Vehicles Commission to block direct manufacturer auto sales in the state is likely only the beginning of a much larger and national effort to prevent Tesla from selling its innovative electric cars.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I can think of no worse function for government than the support of existing businesses at the expense of innovation. Shame on New Jersey and Ohio is next -- hmmm; major Republican governors ready to sell out?

A Conservative Meme On School Lunches: Work For It, Kids! | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Before Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) fibbed and told a story at CPAC about free school lunches that turned out to be false, the meme had been long in the making as a conservative rallying cry about the evils of liberal ideology.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

What bothers me is that they would deprive needy children of food for ideological reasons thereby revealing the meanness of their spirits. Sadly, I do not hear the religious right condemning this willingness to deprive the most vulnerable. I do not hear those who want this to be a "Christian" country and who rail against the war on religion, asking the conservatives what would Jesus do. Shame on the conservatives, compassionate indeed.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Some great aquariums in this set of pictures, but they left out one of my favorites from Copenhagen, it ran the length of the urinal wall in the hotel bathroom so presumably somebody servicing the fish could also see the men relieving themselves. No matter, very conducive to happy micturation.

Why Obama Got Russia Wrong (and Romney Got It Right)

Why Obama Got Russia Wrong (and Romney Got It Right) | Upsetment | Scoop.it
To peer into the conservative media and blogosphere as it covers Russa's invasion of Crimea is to risk a fatal dose of schadenfreude. There are reports about how Sarah Palin totally called that Putin would invade Ukraine (she will be on Fox News tonight to remind us), about how Mitt...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The real problem is that the American political process tends to emphasize threats rather than possibilities. While Russia certainly wants to grab more control and even territory in its area of influence (as does China and possibly Iran), the real challenge is to get all the influential powers to join together in efforts to control the internecine conflict within countries, cultures, and even religions. The great failure of the Obama administration with Russia has been the failure to recognize Russia's ambit in Syria and the insistence on staying in Afghanistan to impose a political system of our liking.
