Drone flights overhead cause stress for black bears, study says

Drone flights overhead cause stress for black bears, study says | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Drones operated by researchers may have unintended consequences for wildlife, warns the lead author of a new study showing the buzzing of unmanned aerial vehicles overhead can leave black bears stressed, with racing hearts.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It is a given in science that the process of studying something has its own effects. Therefore, scientists, especially those studying animals, must have a clear sense of responsibility and take care to not do harm. Drones are not toys but invasive incursions into the environment.

Jewish extremists suspected in West Bank village fire: NGO

Jewish extremists suspected in West Bank village fire: NGO | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A tent was torched and Hebrew-language graffiti was sprayed Thursday at a Palestinian Bedouin village in the occupied West Bank in what residents and an NGO said was a suspected attack by Jewish extremists.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

These animals are an insult to Israel and Judaism. They are as undeserving of sympathy as any terrorist; that they do their dirty deeds in the night and cloaked in their religious fervor makes them more like the KKK than civilized beings. Being of Jewish heritage, I am appalled and ashamed. I wonder if there is a way to start donating to the Palestinian Community and particularly to the Bedouin. Does anybody know of a Jews for Palestinians NGO or charity that actually helps the Palestinian people? I want to send a check (equal to all the money I donated as a kid for trees to be planted in Israel) and I hope others will do likewise. Sadly, it is only with money that we can meaningfully vote in today's world.

Repression in Egypt from Mubarak to Sisi

Repression in Egypt from Mubarak to Sisi | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Egypt under President Sisi is more autocratic and repressive than at any other point in the country’s history.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It is not clear to what extent the U.S. has had a hand in the rise of the Sisi reign, but it is clear that in the end it will be America that will be blamed by the Egyptian people as they struggle against tyranny. I fear that once again the Department of State, the Department of Defense, and the espionage community (CIA and NSA) are dragging us into stupidity just as they did years ago in Iran. We seem determined to support dictatorships in the belief that they will last and then to be totally befuddled when the people rise up. And we can't depend on those uprisings being forever internally confused. Libya is not the best example, Iran is. And, let us not forget that such coalescence of popular will is typically under the guise of religion, which means that we are pushing Egypt into a more ferocious Sunni camp. Very foolish indeed.

Black delivery driver replaced by manager after Lowe’s customer demands white employee | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Marcus Bradley says he was shocked when his boss accepted the customer's racist demands
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I's delighted that Lowe's fired the manager. I hope somebody tells the customer that she is scum; I'm sure like the ass she is that she will be bragging to her friends about how she stood up for her rights and "Christian civilization" or some such bullshit.

Armed 'Patriot' Group Roams Ferguson With Assault Rifles | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Heavily-armed members of a controversial patriot group added an extra dose of unease to protests in Ferguson.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I wonder what will happen if one of these yahoos fires his weapon, or worse if they kill somebody. This is so clearly an intent to incite violence. Now, what happens if a Black group shows up with their weapons at the ready? Madness from the idiot right, and towards what cause, to prove they have little brains, small pricks, and big guns?!

Beretta’s fight to arm the military

Beretta’s fight to arm the military | Upsetment | Scoop.it
As the Md. firm’s M9 is retired, the Army opens the field to commercial gunmakers to vie for the next contract.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

If you are into handguns, and so many Americans are, this is an interesting look at the current state of the market as civilian expectations are finding their way into military contracts. Once the bells and whistles were for the weekend shooter, while the government agencies including the military wanted the most basic weapons, guns that were ready when needed but not taken out very often. My own thought is that this may be a mistake since soldiers, unlike police and civilian users, aren't really into practicing and/or taking care of handguns.

What's Changed in Ferguson One Year Later—and What Hasn't | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Looking back on the anniversary of a deadly shooting
Kenneth Weene's insight:

What is really disturbing is that money was found to help businesses reopen and to help Darren Wilson to relocate, but not to help Michael Brown's friend to stay in college. In the end, there can be no forward movement in places like Ferguson without educational, vocational, and economic opportunity for the people of color who live there.

Hot Take on the GOP Debate: National Security | Upsetment | Scoop.it

And from the ideas expressed in this first debate, Republicans clearly don’t think that national security is going to be a determiner of who garners the Republican nomination.  There was a chorus of criticism of President Obama’s policies, but little in the way of practical plans to improve upon them.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

I thought this a pretty good summary of much that went on in last night's circus.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Why I Donated Fetal Tissue After My Later Abortion

Why I Donated Fetal Tissue After My Later Abortion | Upsetment | Scoop.it
I was able to turn my pain into something that could benefit someone else
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The old saying is "Don't throw out the baby with the bathwater." In this case the baby is not a fetus but the right of women to make intelligent decisions about pregnancy. Mrs. Lyon has courageously shared her painful story to remind us how horrible the consequences of again criminalizing abortion will be. The fetus she and her husband aborted would have had a horrible life, her care would have sapped their marriage and probably stopped them from having their son, who is obviously a joy, As for the research to which they provided tissue, we can only hope that it will bear fruit in preventing suffering by others. Abortion should not be used as casual birth control, but it has a real benefit to many.

California Isn't Actually In The Middle Of A Wildfire Apocalypse

California Isn't Actually In The Middle Of A Wildfire Apocalypse | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A review of federal wildfire data shows that the situation in the West is not unusual, and fire-prone areas including California have actually had a comparatively calm season.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I found this interesting. Two of my take-aways. 1) We are building houses in areas where they probably shouldn't be and then fighting to save them when they should be allowed to burn. 2) Funding for forest management is way too low, and that is of course made worse by spending on fighting forest fires. It is imperative that forests be taken care of, not allowed to just sit there accumulating tinder and fuel that makes each fire harder to fight.

ISIS Enshrines a Theology of Rape

ISIS Enshrines a Theology of Rape | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Claiming the Quran’s support, the Islamic State codifies sex slavery in conquered regions of Iraq and Syria and uses the practice as a recruiting tool.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Is this not the ultimate challenge to modern Islam and to the Islamic countries of the world? Either it is unacceptable apostasy and places ISIS in direct conflict with the will of Allah and the teachings of the Prophet, or it is acceptable theology and thereby places the teachings of the faith into disrepute. But wait, wasn't this the same question faced by European countries in dealing with mid-nineteenth century America. If we raise this question about Islam, are we not also raising it about our own past? Either slavery and especially sexual slavery is in context alright or we must recognize once again that our country was founded on something that was evil. Isn't it time that we truly wrestled with that national guilt. I believe we should have a yearly national day of atonement in which we talk about slavery (and Native Americans). Meanwhile, we can hope that the Islamic leaders of all sects will join together in condemning this horror.

These Grammy-winners don't want you to pay for their album. They want you to pay for someone else's. | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Wilco and Taylor Swift are just two of the big-name artists speaking up for the little guys.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I know lots of people see using the Internet to obtain bootleg copies of music, books, and movies as their right. The reasoning is the same as saying, well if the farmer is going to let those apples sit on his tree he should expect me to help myself. In Maine, where I set "Broody New Englander," that attitude would earn you a fanny full of rock-salt courtesy of the farmer's shotgun. Reality is that if we don't support the arts, they will dry up and there will only be what the few want the many to see, hear, and read. So, yeah, buy some music by the little guys (and books)

Tyrone Harris Jr. ‘was pulling it together. And then, this happened.’ | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The teenager’s family and friends said he had big dreams. He also had a penchant for getting into trouble.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It is the nature of young men to run across the field in which a bull is standing. By doing so we males prove both our manhood and how very short has been the journey from the primitive protohominid who lives within and today's species. It is a basic task of society to provide young men with ways to establish their manhood, to show that they, too, are deserving of respect within the tribe and the attentions of the females. For far too many Blacks in America, those rituals that indicate a coming-of-age involve guns, theft, drugs, and of course taunting "the man". If we believe that Black Lives Matter, we must ask ourselves how to change this side of the equation.

Female Cop Shoots 67-Yr-Old Man to Death After He Said “Leave Me Alone, Get Out of My Apartment” | Filming Cops | Upsetment | Scoop.it

Police had no right to enter a “mouthy” old man’s apartment without a warrant, where they started a physical altercation, shot and killed him, the Eighth Circuit ruled.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

At least for once the court held the cops were liable. Does that mean criminal charges or just a law suit from survivors? That I don't know, but this was absolutely police malfeasance. Would it have happened if her were white? Who knows? Interesting that the cops were not actually on duty but were working security, which may mean the company that hired them has some liability. I sure hope so.

MARY E. MARTIN agree with Kenneth Weene.  Is the propensity of the police to shoot black people based on fear and if so, where does that fear come from?  What do you think?

A Cop Killed A White Teen And The #AllLivesMatter Crowd Said Nothing

A Cop Killed A White Teen And The #AllLivesMatter Crowd Said Nothing | Upsetment | Scoop.it
On the evening of July 26, Zachary Hammond pulled into the parking lot of a Hardee's in Seneca, South Carolina. Seated next to him was a young woman who had arranged to meet someone there to sell a bag
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I am hard-pressed to visualize the situation with the young man gunning the car at him and the cop able to leap to the side and get two shots off through the window, accurate shots at that. This sounds to me like bad policing meets kids with poor judgement and the result is blood on the pavement. It is time to rein-in the police in this country, and the best way to start is getting rid of the damnable war on drugs. The next is to require all police to wear cameras that are automatically turned on when they open their holsters. Another is to require cops to spend time on the beat; a real problem is that policing from a car doesn't allow the development of any human skills. Which brings up my fourth recommendation, that every officer have to be part of an ongoing therapy or mutual help group that includes not just cops.

Sure people can make mistakes; I make them, too. But when we're talking about a key issue, something that is in the news every day for weeks and a dumb-dumb says something like this, please explain to me how any woman, any woman at all, can consider voting for him. As a man who cares, I couldn't vote for this turkey after this comment. Sadly, his attitude reflects the entire right wing of the GOP in their disregard for the people of our country, especially women. Can't the Republican Party do better? If not, perhaps it's time for a new political party, one that cares about the real America not just the corporations.

“Just comply”: Fox News hosts recommend black men stop “resisting arrest” if they don’t want to die | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Cops wouldn't make "bad decisions" if "the perp didn't run away" VIDEO
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Perhaps if Black men (and women) could assume that they would receive courteous and lawful treatment at the hands of police, this advice would make better sense. But when a Black woman doesn't put out her cigarette, which she is smoking in her car, and ends up incarcerated and dead, well, that raises a question. Sure, fleeing over a traffic stop is dumb and should result in serious punishment, but firing that gun was totally wrong and every thinking person knows that were Mr. Dubose a white man the shot would not have been fired. Of course, the real problem is that Fox commentators are not what one might call thinking people. I wonder what they'll have to say about today's news that evidently the juvenile justice system in St. Louis is totally different for Blacks and Whites. Hmm, what s surprise that one is——not!
