3 Israeli Suspects Confess Killing Palestinian Teenager

3 Israeli Suspects Confess Killing Palestinian Teenager | Upsetment | Scoop.it
JERUSALEM (AP) — Three Israeli suspects in the vigilante-style killing of a Palestinian teenager who was abducted and burned to death last week confessed to the crime on Monday and were re-enacting the incident for authorities, an official said...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

There is no place in the human community for such behavior. It was below contempt and there is no punishment that is appropriate. That said, can we also recognize that those who bomb and shoot rockets and those who use drones and mortars are also hoping to burn innocent people to death as well. Removing it themselves from the crime makes it no less despicable--be they Palestinians, Israelis, Americans, Syrians, Sunni, Shia, or whatever. Shame on our species.

Where Do Borders Need to Be Redrawn? - Room for Debate - NYTimes.com | Upsetment | Scoop.it
What parts of the world should rethink their maps? Why and how?
Kenneth Weene's insight:

An interesting set of discussions. Of course, what might be better is a world without borders, but that is for another time and perhaps a better species.

Liberty, equality and Lincoln’s legacy: Is America doomed? | Upsetment | Scoop.it
With Obama's dreams of being a second Lincoln ruined by a new civil war, how long can our paralyzed country last?
Kenneth Weene's insight:

What do you thing: Is our nation doomed? Will the U.S.A. go the way of the Soviet Union? Or can we save ourselves? An excellent think piece. By the way, did you catch my interview of John McKee Barr on It Matters Radio? He is the author of "Loathing Lincoln."

We’re not that polarized. Oh yes, we are. | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A new study concludes there is less polarization that advertised. Not everyone agrees.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

What do you think? Is the U.S. polarized? Too polarized to function? Some questions I wish had been asked: 1) Is it okay for people to disagree on issues of government, or is there just one correct answer? 2) If people disagree, should the majority position be accepted even while the minority try to change that majority opinion? 3) Do politicians do enough to explain and clarify the positions on which there is disagreement?  4) Is the messiness of government and politics is okay, but politicians should stop trying to hold programs, laws, and appointments hostage; do we need to get more things done.

What about you? Any questions you'd want discusses?

Supreme Court OKs another religious birth control exemption

Supreme Court OKs another religious birth control exemption | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A divided Supreme Court gave a small Christian college in Illinois a temporary exemption Thursday from the “contraceptive mandate” in President Obama ’s healthcare law, renewing questions about how the justices will handle religious requests to opt out of the rule.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Has the Supreme Court lost its way? While I disagreed with the Hobby Lobby decision, it at least offered a path forward using a compromise, but this decision not only puts that path forward at risk but also apparently flies in the face of the process by which the court functions, one of agreement and discussion.

WASHINGTON: As federal highway fund nears empty, DOT warns states to expect less | Congress | McClatchy DC | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The U.S. Department of Transportation said Tuesday that it would start limiting payments to states for road and transit projects next month in an attempt to conserve the federal Highway Trust Fund’s rapidly diminishing cash balance.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Infrastructure deterioration -- Brought to us by the never-ending constipation of this Congress and the Republican Party. Here in Arizona the GOP has set up the road funds such that every road can be maintained about once every 78 years -- now that means disaster.

Americans’ confidence in government down as 7 percent now have trust in Congress | Washington Watch | McClatchy DC

Americans’ confidence in government down as 7 percent now have trust in Congress | Washington Watch | McClatchy DC | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Confidence in government has reached historic lows, according to a new Gallup survey, as 7 percent say they’re have confidence in Congress and 29 percent feel that way about the White House.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Is it time for a constitutional convention? For a government reorganization? Perhaps for both? Assuredly it is time to stop the waste of our military-industrial-espionage sub-government. Without question it is time to focus on the government providing services and quality of life for our people. Certainly, it is time to limit the role of government in controlling every aspect of life and business. Most importantly, it is time to reform the method of electing and the role of money in dominating our political process.

Before Shooting in Iraq, a Warning on Blackwater

Before Shooting in Iraq, a Warning on Blackwater | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Not long after the security firm’s top manager in Iraq told a State Department investigator “that he could kill” him, an inquiry was abandoned. Weeks later, the firm’s guards killed 17 civilians in Iraq.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Blackwater is the poster child for the arrogance of the Bush administration and for the incompetence with which it governed. Worse, to the world it represents the arrogance and brutality of America. We should be better, and we must do better if we are to have  credibility in the world.

U.S. Postal Service losing tens of millions annually subsidizing shipments to Alaska

U.S. Postal Service losing tens of millions annually subsidizing shipments to Alaska | Upsetment | Scoop.it

"

Under a federal program exclusive to Alaska, the Postal Service is responsible for shipping more than 100 million pounds a year of apples, frozen meat, dog food, diapers and countless other consumer items to off-road villages in the sparsely populated outposts known as the bush. Over three decades acting as freight forwarder, the agency has lost $2.5 billion."

Kenneth Weene's insight:

It is this kind of mandate from Congress that makes it so difficult for the Postal Service to keep afloat. Perhaps providing such extra assistance to the remote people of Alaska is appropriate, but then the federal and/or state coffers should help carry the cost.

Taliban Mount Major Assault in Afghanistan

Taliban Mount Major Assault in Afghanistan | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The group has attacked police outposts and government facilities in several districts of northern Helmand Province, sending the police and military officials scrambling to shore up defenses.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I have said it before and I will keep saying it, the war in Afghanistan is a fool's errand. The Pashtun nationalism which underlies the Taliban (along with their commitment to Islam as they understand it) make this a movement that will not go away and cannot be defeated by guns. It can only be dealt with by both recognizing the nationalist aspiration (including those in Pakistan) and by trying to introduce a more moderate interpretation of their faith.

The political motives of mass killers | Al Jazeera America | Upsetment | Scoop.it
What a lack of mental health services and gun control doesn’t explain about mass violence in America
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is an incredibly important piece. I would only add that those who see themselves as losing the race and who feel that they have never had a fair chance in the game, will necessarily be angry. They will hit out, usually not at those who are winning but at those who are more vulnerable. If the distress of feeling that one is a loser also loosens the internal controls, what we call mental health, well that makes the potential for danger even greater.

IRBIL, Iraq: Islamic State releases video of Baghdadi in Mosul in new assertion of authority | Iraq | McClatchy DC | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The Islamic State on Saturday released a video of what it said was its leader, Abu Bakr al Baghdadi, directing Friday prayers in one of Mosul’s oldest mosques, an event that not only displayed the group’s military control over Iraq’s second largest city but also served as a bold assertion of religious authority.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I read this an am transported back to the Middle Ages. If God is speaking though this man, through the Pope, through the Head Rabbi in Jerusalem, or anyone else, I'll surely go to hell; but I think that all such claims are full of shit. If there were a God, I don't think that God would pick one spokesperson and give him or her the truth. Nope, just another hot air balloon full of himself and wanting to run the world.

Fundamental flaws in the Hamas-Fatah reconciliation deal, including disputes over security cooperation with Israel, may lead to the fall of the unity government.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It behooves all sides to work towards creating such a unity government and helping the Palestinian state forward. The efforts of those who would gin up anger and conflict be it through kidnappings or weapons must be resisted. Could the four dead teenagers perhaps become the symbol of a new effort for reconciliation and joint effort? We can always pray.

A California City Revolts Against Undocumented Immigrants

A California City Revolts Against Undocumented Immigrants | Upsetment | Scoop.it
What one California city's struggle means for the rest of the country
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I wonder what these protestors want done. These undocumented people arrive in the U.S. and the Border Patrol takes them into custody. Should we just dump them back on the other side of the border? Many would die (shame on us) and others would just come back into the states - they have no other place to go. So they have to be "storaged" someplace for processing. That place will have an infusion of workers and jobs. Sounds like a good money deal for a town. Okay, let's find another town, one which won't be as convenient but which will want those jobs and money. But let's not waste our energies on arguing about that; let's figure out how to fix immigration. Meanwhile, I would ask this bunch one  question: How many of their grandparents came through Ellis Island?

Fox Host: Hobby Lobby Decision Sends 'Shrieking' Feminists Into 'Hysterics' (VIDEO) | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Fox News host Greg Gutfeld had some choice words Tuesday for women who opposed the Supreme Court's ruling against the Obamacare contraception mandate.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I find this behavior by Faux News objectionable. Even if I were to agree with the BL decision, and I don't, I find this condescending and pejorative comment an insult not simply to those women who disagreed with SCOTUS majority but to all women. Does a woman exercising her right to free speech equal hysteria, begging, and screeching? I think not. Oh, and his analogy is totally dumb; his behavior on air is part of his job performance, a woman's choice of contraception is not part of hers.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

If you remember the scourge of some of these diseases, you appreciate the wonder that vaccination is. Many anti-vaccination believers have no appreciation of the risk to which they are subjecting their children. It is bad enough that we have had recent outbreaks of measles; wait until polio reappears. I wonder how a mother will feel when her crippled child says, "You did this to me."

Supreme Court Birth Control Ruling May Impact Millions Of Americans

Supreme Court Birth Control Ruling May Impact Millions Of Americans | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The Supreme Court said in a landmark ruling on Monday that "closely held" corporations with religious owners may opt out of Obamacare's birth control mandate, a definition that sounds narrow in scope but actually comprises a vast majority of American businesses.

The most immediate impact will be felt by the female employees of Hobby Lobby (which employs 13,000 people total) and Conestoga Wood (which employs 1,000 people), who will no longer have cost-free access to emergency contraceptives like the morning-after pill. Beyond that, health care experts and pro-choice advocates say it's close to impossible to know precisely how many women will be affected because it depends on which employers opt out.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Am I the only one wondering what happens when it comes out that a member of that close group which owns Hobby Lobby (or some other company) is using the pill for contraception? When it comes out that a member of that group is investing in a pill manufacturer? When it comes out that they have bought their own insurance which covers the pill? I have a strong suspicion that skullduggery will out; that these are not honest people; that they are hypocrites motivated by the show of religiosity not by its spirit.

Residents said insurgents from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) were still in control of the town center Sunday, despite state television claims that Iraqi forces had cleared Tikrit of militants.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Here is a picture of the man who would rule the Islamic State and presumably the Islamic world, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi the self-proclaimed caliph -  a man whom even the jihadist movement rejects as too extreme.  Yes, American neo-conservatives, you have created monsters for the rest of us to tame.
