How One College Handled a Sexual Assault Complaint

How One College Handled a Sexual Assault Complaint | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A freshman said she was sexually assaulted at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. The school’s handling of the investigation left her wishing she had remained silent.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is an horrifying account on many levels. A young woman being raped. A college failing to investigate properly or worse to respect her as a person. College kids drinking to excess and not being aware of the possible consequences of such behavior. And perhaps most upsetting of all that we as a society are still dancing around these problems and not realizing how serious they are. Why does it take the federal government to tell colleges and local police departments that investigating and dealing with sexual assault is more important than football?

6 ways climate change is ruining summer for everyone | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Heat waves are only the beginning -- it's about to get really ugly out there, everyone VIDEO
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Not that I want to scare you. Yeah, actually I do. The net energy absorption that the Earth has been experiencing in recent years has some dire consequences. Here are a few of the changes that are already underway. Oh, and don't forget that many of the steps we take individually to alleviate these problems, like using our air conditioners more or keeping our kids inside have their own consequences and problems.

The Resurrection of Ahmad Chalabi

The Resurrection of Ahmad Chalabi | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The man who helped convince the United States
to invade Iraq has spent the last decade in the political wilderness. But now,
with his country in chaos, he could be its next leader.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I saw this man as a poser when the Bush Administration trotted him out. Now I see him as a potential dictator. Just one more piece of evidence that American hegemony was no better than the British Empire. Woodrow Wilson had it right when he called for local autonomy and independent governments. Of course, that was at the end of World War I, and the world got British-French machinations instead.

Border surge could be windfall for Senate candidate's air charter firm

Border surge could be windfall for Senate candidate's air charter firm | Upsetment | Scoop.it
As a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in New Mexico, retired Marine Col. Allen Weh says it's time for tougher border security.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Should we in the U.S. provide these safeguards for children who come to this country alone and from countries other than Mexico? That is one of the biggest questions. We return Mexican kids asap, without any investigation into their status or needs. When the current law was passed (under President Bush and by almost universal acclamation in Congress), it started the groundswell of children being sent here. Clearly, misunderstanding of the "Dream Act" that was proposed has added to the problem. Then, too, there is the endless violence in those Central American countries (often partly fueled by American drug demand which keeps cartels in business) and the poverty, which is in part a result of a failure of American aid and the concentration of land and wealth by big business (local and American).

Of course we need to refuse entry to these kids, but what to do is not an easy question. I do know that keeping them penned up for a long time waiting for some kind of bureaucratic process is not a viable answer. Refusing them food and shelter at the border is one option, but do we see ourselves at that inhumane (or for some that unchristian)? Your ideas?

Blood feud: Senate leaders can’t stand each otherTitle goes here | Upsetment | Scoop.it

A well researched piece on the dysfunction of the U.S. Senate and the personal rivalry that has developed between Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Slowly, inexorably, the growing enmity of American politics has crept into the Senate making that once genial club now a place of conflict and dysfunction. Meanwhile, most of us Americans are fed up with both sides and want rational discussion and reasonable solutions instead of bickering and blocking one another.

NSA, FBI Spied on Muslim Public Figures' Email, Used "Raghead" Slur in Internal Document | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The biggest news of the day is from Glenn Greenwald's new site, The Intercept, in a story co-written by Greenwald and Murtaza Hussain: The National Security Agency and FBI have covertly monitored the emails of prominent Muslim-Americans—including a political candidate and several civil rights activists, academics, and lawyers—under secretive procedures...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is not only profoundly disturbing and disgusting, it is also so anti-American as to make me question what has happened to the country I grew up loving.

Bankers warn over rising US business lending - FT.com | Upsetment | Scoop.it

US lending to businesses is reaching record levels but banks are privately warning that the activity should not be seen as evidence of an economic recovery. Much of the corporate lending is going to fund payouts to shareholders, finance acquisitions and fuel the domestic energy boom rather than to support companies' organic growth.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

In other words, the banker driven Ponzi scheme is continuing. It shows up as profits, which means bonuses, which are then siphoned off while the money goes round and round. I see another debacle coming.

UN report reveals toll of war on women as the sole providers for a quarter of the families who have fled the fighting
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Wherever there is internal unrest it is the women and children who suffer most. Whether it is these hapless victims of the civil war in Syria or the children being sent by their families to escape the upheaval in Guatemala, the story of suffering and misery is in their eyes and will unquestionably come back to haunt another generation and another. Humans, we are often a disgusting species, given to killing one another for what -- so our leader can be more important than the other group's leader? Shame on us.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Three Israeli suspects in the vigilante-style killing of a Palestinian teenager who was abducted and burned to death last week confessed to the crime on Monday and were re-enacting the incident for authorities, an official said...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

There is no place in the human community for such behavior. It was below contempt and there is no punishment that is appropriate. That said, can we also recognize that those who bomb and shoot rockets and those who use drones and mortars are also hoping to burn innocent people to death as well. Removing it themselves from the crime makes it no less despicable--be they Palestinians, Israelis, Americans, Syrians, Sunni, Shia, or whatever. Shame on our species.

We’re not that polarized. Oh yes, we are. | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A new study concludes there is less polarization that advertised. Not everyone agrees.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

What do you think? Is the U.S. polarized? Too polarized to function? Some questions I wish had been asked: 1) Is it okay for people to disagree on issues of government, or is there just one correct answer? 2) If people disagree, should the majority position be accepted even while the minority try to change that majority opinion? 3) Do politicians do enough to explain and clarify the positions on which there is disagreement?  4) Is the messiness of government and politics is okay, but politicians should stop trying to hold programs, laws, and appointments hostage; do we need to get more things done.

What about you? Any questions you'd want discusses?

Hundreds of immigrant kids transported far north of the border

Hundreds of immigrant kids transported far north of the border | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Hundreds of immigrant children have been taken north of the US-Mexico border to stay with relatives or in temporary government or charitable facilities. Governors there say they’ve been kept in the dark.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It seems to me that any politician speaking to this problem should have a comprehensive solution to offer. Many of these loudmouths are opportunists looking for a soapbox rather than leaders trying to work to solve this or any problem. As an American citizen, I want political leaders willing to work towards solutions and willing to work in a coordinated manner with others towards those solutions. Otherwise, things will assuredly get worse.

First woman arrested under Tennessee law that criminalizes pregnancy outcomes

First woman arrested under Tennessee law that criminalizes pregnancy outcomes | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Mallory Loyola was arrested and charged with simple assault two days after giving birth to her daughter
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I am certainly not going to support the right of pregnant women to do drugs that might harm their fetuses, but this law is an overreach. That  the drug in her system apparently doesn't fall under the law makes this a clear civil suit against the local police for false arrest. That there isn't appropriate prenatal care in the state and that the governor opposes the expansion of medicaid which might address that lack makes him more guilty of child abuse than anyone. Just seems to me that the idiots are getting too much power.

The Deported L.A. Gangs Behind This Border Kid Crisis

The Deported L.A. Gangs Behind This Border Kid Crisis | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Tens of thousands of Honduran thugs have been flown home on Con Air since 2001. Now, what they learned on U.S. streets is sending children fleeing north.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is an interesting perspective on this ongoing issue and crisis. While I believe that deporting gang members may have contributed to the violence, that doesn't mean we should have kept them here. Perhaps the real problem is the economic and social chaos in their homeland which drove those gang-bangers to this country in the first place. The question is how much of that chaos is the responsibility of U.S. policies.

Judge rules Florida Legislature broke laws on maps - US News | Upsetment | Scoop.it
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — The Florida Legislature illegally drew the state's congressional districts to primarily benefit the Republican Party, a judge has ruled, and has ordered them redrawn.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Gerrymandering goes back to the early days of America. You'd think by now the laws would be so clear that no politician would dare ignore them. But of course that assumes that politicians bother to know the laws. They have their own adage:  "Ignorance of the law is no excuse unless you belong to a political party."

Once again Arizona's Republican politicians show they are more concerned with kowtowing to their right wing base than they are in doing the right thing, even when that right thing is proper research designed to help veterans. I have said this before and I will keep saying it: If we want intelligent government in Arizona, we have to stop giving the GOP the reins.

What a lack of mental health services and gun control doesn’t explain about mass violence in America
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is an incredibly important piece. I would only add that those who see themselves as losing the race and who feel that they have never had a fair chance in the game, will necessarily be angry. They will hit out, usually not at those who are winning but at those who are more vulnerable. If the distress of feeling that one is a loser also loosens the internal controls, what we call mental health, well that makes the potential for danger even greater.

IRBIL, Iraq: Islamic State releases video of Baghdadi in Mosul in new assertion of authority | Iraq | McClatchy DC | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The Islamic State on Saturday released a video of what it said was its leader, Abu Bakr al Baghdadi, directing Friday prayers in one of Mosul’s oldest mosques, an event that not only displayed the group’s military control over Iraq’s second largest city but also served as a bold assertion of religious authority.
