Trump: I Would Stop Crime By Letting ‘Tough’ Cops Take Charge

Trump: I Would Stop Crime By Letting ‘Tough’ Cops Take Charge | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Pushed by Fox News host Bill O’Reilly to provide specifics on curbing violent crime in cities like Chicago, Donald Trump said Monday that he would simply put “tough” cops in charge.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
In case folks don't get this, it's an appeal to the worst of our cops to take over, not those who want to protect and serve but those who want to beat and control. Is it the way to control crime? I think in the end it will result in warfare in our streets. The way to fight crime is to first help people find better ways to live and second to make wealth more equitable in its distribution. There is less need for crime when people can find life and dignity more easily, not when they are struggling to get the crumbs from the tables of the wealthy and powerful.

Louisiana Governor Humiliates Donald Trump For Trying To Turn Flooding Into A Photo Op (TWEET)

Louisiana Governor Humiliates Donald Trump For Trying To Turn Flooding Into A Photo Op (TWEET) | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Trump wants to see the flood damage. Behind him. As he poses for some pictures.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Seems that Louisiana has been getting a very fast response from the White House. Also, the governor has evidently asked Mr. Obama to not come to the disaster scene until things are better in hand. Meanwhile, Trump neither coordinated with the governor or the state or gave any meaningful assistance merely taking the opportunity for photo shots and less than a minute in handing out aid. Hopefully, when Sect. Clinton and her running-mate show up, they will have more to offer and more willingness to give.

Boston police officers say no to mediation - The Boston Globe

Boston police officers say no to mediation - The Boston Globe | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Nearly a year after the launch of BPD’s mediation program for complaints against officers, no one has participated.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Boston is only one city, but this article shows how the Culture of the Blue Wall still holds, tight-assed and anachronistic as it may be. Remember, these are not the rogue cops who have abused people facing possible dismissal or prison; this program is just for cases where civilians have a grievance, perhaps about the language used. What a sad commentary on our "finest."

It may only be a small, policy wonk step, but Mr. Obama has once again shown that he is aware of Climate Change while so many politicians want to play the ostrich in the face of a growing crisis.

7 Scientific Effects of Marijuana That Experts Want to Study | Upsetment | Scoop.it
This is what scientists want to study regarding marijuana. The government says it will remain a schedule 1 drug.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Gosh, the government is finally making it possible for scientists to study marijuana for little things like cancer., replacing pain meds, helping anxiety. Can the feds go any slower? In many states the dispensaries are already doing to much good for people who really need the help. Am I the only one who reads this and wonder how much control the big pharmaceutical companies are wielding on the federal policy? Of course tobacco and alcohol don't face anything like these controls because they've got effective lobbyists and can legally contribute to political campaigns.

Galloping off in all directions with taxpayers’ money
Kenneth Weene's insight:
A perfect example of government done badly, and the culprit is Congress, but let's not forget the people who are putting their horses into the wild rather than caring for them. At any rate, what exactly is wrong with culling herds since there aren't enough natural predators? I don't expect we can get hunters to go after horse, but we can slaughter some in order that the herds have decent food supplies. Maybe, the French have a good idea.

Wrongfully Convicted Louisiana Man Asks Justice Department to Investigate New Orleans Prosecutors

Wrongfully Convicted Louisiana Man Asks Justice Department to Investigate New Orleans Prosecutors | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Unsuccessful before the U.S. Supreme Court, a man who served 18 years in prison for a crime he did not commit asks the Justice Department to hold prosecutors accountable.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
If this man's suffering was not caused by incompetence and poor training, than can we reasonably infer that it was caused by intent? To say that the prosecutor handled this case as he handled hundreds of others is hardly an exoneration of that prosecutor. That this Louisiana parish would contest Mr. Thompson's demand for restitution is, IMHO, an example of institutional racism. I have no doubt that were he a white man, the courts and the state of Louisiana would have handled both the original case (including the evidence) and the reaction to Mr. Thompson's exoneration differently.

Dag Hammarskjold was one of my personal heroes. I've always believed that the CIA was involved in his death and that is one of the many reasons I oppose the military-industrial-espionage complex. It is also one of the reasons that I have always considered the Dulles brothers seeds of evil in the Republican party. I hope that these papers will prove that my disgust was justified or that they show there was actually a conspiracy to frame our government. Meanwhile, history comes back to haunt me. I guess that's part of growing old, our lives become history and our experiences antiques.

A tiny Alaskan village has voted to abandon their ancestral home to the rising seas, becoming possibly the first settlement in the United States forced to relocate due to climate change .

Kenneth Weene's insight:
Climate change seems far removed from those of us living in major American cities; but for those who live on the edge of nature, it is very real and immediate. It is time that the U.S. begin focusing some of our national concern on Americans who live closest to those changes be they on a small island off Alaska or in the bayous of Louisiana, there is a sea change coming and folks need to be moved and hatches battened down.

I don't know which is a sorrier point, that #Trump wants to ignore the constitution or that he wants to ignore reality. Either way, the man is a joke. The only useful things he had to say were the areas in which his meandering brought him in line with what the Obama administration has been doing. And still so many Republicans don't speak up. A florist caught between faith and discrimination | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The decision by a Washington state florist not to provide flowers for a gay couple's wedding has set up an emotional court fight that may shape similar cases in the future.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
This is an incredibly sad story of a good person who could not allow herself to bend before the law, at least not when it came to her understanding of her faith. But, when all is said and done, the right of same-sex couples to expect service equal to that given heterosexual couples is the right way for a country that values law and equality.

Inside the administration’s $1 billion deal to detain Central American asylum seekers | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Corrections Corporation of America has a four-year, $1 billion contract, despite holding few immigrants.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Outsourcing makes it ever harder for government to change direction because there is such a vested interest from a business to keep things the same. When it comes to prisons and detention centers the pressure to keep locking people up is just plain crazy wrong. Now, to add the insult of constant payments no matter what the need is truly to create the essential of a fascist economic state. This is one of the worst things I've heard of the Obama administration doing. Shame on them and shame on the United States.

GOP donors, fearful of Trump-fueled electoral rout, direct big money down-ballot

GOP donors, fearful of Trump-fueled electoral rout, direct big money down-ballot | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Super PAC fundraising hits a new record: nearly $1 billion collected by the end of June.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
So the GOP is trying to buy its continued control of Congress. Somehow that seems like a bad idea for two reasons. First, the GOP really has not got much a track record; just consider how badly we all view congress now, and they've been in control. Second, if they can't keep their own house in order and can offer us a court jester at the helm, why should we think they can run the country? While I do have a few local GOP candidates I will vote for and a few I would if they were up for re-election, for the most part. I think it is time to force the GOP out so they will actually do some rethinking. I truly hope we can produce a new party in America, one that rejects the creed of money and replace it with a few of the future based on human justice and social values.

With 500,000 female genital mutilation survivors or at risk in U.S., it’s not just someone else’s problem

With 500,000 female genital mutilation survivors or at risk in U.S., it’s not just someone else’s problem | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Kenneth Weene's insight:
First, let's get it said this horrifies and disgusts me. Second, I would applaud making genital mutilation of a female child grounds for giving that child both sanctuary in the U.S. and grounds for removal from those who did such a thing even if they are parents. Third, I would consider doing that to a child in this country grounds for deportation and revocation of citizenship and for prison. All that said, I don't think it should be our foreign policy to tell other countries how to treat their children, male or female. Rather, we should simply make it clear that anyone who has done this to a child, no matter where they are from, are not welcome in our country, not even for governmental reasons. Every ambassador, etc. should be asked if they have done or been involved in having such a thing done. If so, they should not be welcome here. Also, I would hope we might suggest to other countries, allies and even adversaries that value women, that they place the same restrictions and laws in place. But, no, we cannot tell other countries what they must do.
