Michigan Considers Fetus Tax Credit Bill After Slashing Tax Credits for Actual Children | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Pro-choicers have been accusing conservatives for decades of valuing fetuses more than actual born children (and exponentially more than post-pubescent women), and now state legislators in Michigan are considering proving them right.

Ohio Republicans Push Law To Penalize Colleges For Helping Students Vote

Ohio Republicans Push Law To Penalize Colleges For Helping Students Vote | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Republicans in the Ohio Legislature are pushing for a plan that would cost the state’s public universities tens of millions of dollars if they provide students with proof-of-address documents to help them register to vote.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Once again we see the GOP trying to deprive people of the right to vote. I have to ask once again, why would anybody support a party that was so opposed to democratic process?

Salafism’s March through North Africa

Salafism’s March through North Africa | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Islam today is torn between those who would go back to a "purer religious society" and those who want the benefits of modern materialism and freedom. This is the real issue in the Muslim world, especially the Arab portion of it; and it is an issue which we in the "West" can not address.

Busted: Portman Clouds Opposition To Background Checks In Letter To Constituent | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Ohio’s Rob Portman is the latest Republican senator caught trying to cloud his opposition to significantly expanding background checks for gun sales.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Portman joins Flake in my list of previously respected senators, the ones I thought were honest even if they disagreed with me, but for whom now I have a distain. You don't try to mislead your constituents when we so clearly want gun control.

Serving their country, losing their jobs

Serving their country, losing their jobs | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The jobs of the nation's citizen soldiers are supposed to be safe while they are serving their country: Federal law does not allow employers to penalize service members because of their military duties.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Returning soldiers: We call them heroes, but we treat them like discarded sandwiches. There is something sadly wrong with our government and it can be summed up by the preoccupation with money instead of people, with the rights of corporations and organizations instead of the well-being of individuals.

Pro-Business Decisions Are Defining This Supreme Court

Pro-Business Decisions Are Defining This Supreme Court | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A new analysis finds the current Supreme Court to be by far the most pro-business of any since World War II.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Was there anybody who didn't already know this? This Supreme Court thinks that corporations are direct descents from Adam and Eve or at least from Jesus Christ. They have lost the sense of proportion that T.R., Taft, and Wilson tried to give back to the country after the last corruption of the late nineteenth century.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

While we in the U.S. and most of Europe battle over marriage equality for our gay and lesbian community, in the Middle East, to just get married without clergy is a major first step for civil rights. Congratulations to these two brave Lebanese Muslims, one Sunni and one Shia, whose love has taken precedence over the fractiousness of their respective religious communities.

GOP Battles A Threat To Gun Rights That Even The NRA Says Doesn’t Exist | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Republican lawmakers are pushing legislation aimed at combating a threat to gun rights that even the National Rifle Association has described as pure fiction.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The GOP is becoming the party of the deranged conspiracy theories, and nobody better typifies that than Inhofe. Let any nut with a blog suggest that the government is doing something nefarious, and this loon jumps to the "rescue". Reminds me of a character from "Memoirs From the Asylum."

IRS, DOJ, and Benghazi Expose Limits of Obama’s Big Government Vision

IRS, DOJ, and Benghazi Expose Limits of Obama’s Big Government Vision | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Obama looks to government as the first solution. It’s in his DNA, writes Stuart Stevens. And now that DNA is producing rogue genes.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

There has been a definite failure to manage government in the way that we expect from the administration. This is clearly exacerbated by the absence of certain key people, such as a head of the IRS; but in the end it is a real failure by the president.

Does that mean we should give up on how we govern or we should demand better? I go with the second option because we cannot prosper nor achieve happiness without good government.

Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) defended her vote against a background check amendment in an op-ed published Monday in the Seacoast Online, just before her vote came under fire in a new television ad put out by Mayors Against Illegal Guns.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Kelly Ayotte ignored the will of the people of her state. Now she'd trying to say she really didn't mean to. Poor Kelly, so misunderstood. At least Jeff Flake, one of my senators, knows that we think he's beneath pond scum because he voted against better background checks.

A clear case of self-defense rallies supporters of gun rights | Upsetment | Scoop.it
As the national gun debate raged, a mother in Georgia fired shots that echoed across the country.

Except this isn't a clear case of self-defense. He ran away from a woman who challenged him with a phone in her hand and then went past the goodies to steal to look for this lady and her kids in a crawl space. Something isn't quite kosher with this story. And why did she call her husband instead of 911? Nope, can we have Perry Mason weigh in on this one?

And, yes, I do believe in the right to defend yourself in your home and the right to own guns. Just not sure I believe this story.

The Least Popular Senator in America | Upsetment | Scoop.it
PHOENIX — In between interviews with immigration restrictionists and before heading to the U.S.-Mexico border, I stopped by the local office of newly elected Sen. Jeff Flake—a proud Gang of Eight member.

The man is a weasel, and I had thought him honorable. He never offered an amendment to correct this supposed fault, and how would you differentiate online sales by friends versus commercial transactions? I know my friends' phone numbers; if I were a personal transaction, I'd phone or text them.
